Volunteer Workday NNIS Removal with UUTC

March 15, 2022 @ 9:30 am - 1:00 pm

Background info:

The Unitarian Universalists of Transylvania County (UUTC) are pursuing a Certified Native Plant Habitat designation. As a campus that drains 25 acres from downtown and Broad street, “Jumping Branch” creek at the back of the property is particularly susceptible to the accumulation of invasive species from seeds carried onto the property. The effort to clean up the creek area began in February of 2019 with assistance from Torry Nergart of Conserving Carolina, who guided a UUTC team in an installation of “live stakes” of silky dogwood and elderberry to help hold the bank in preparation for the ripping out that can now be accomplished.

Workday Description:

The property has the usual suspects of liriope, oriental bittersweet, privet, and other class one invasive plants. A preliminary crew has been working since October of 2021 to flag the native species such as wild cherry, red bud, black walnut, sweet gum, box elder, button bush, river oats and more. More natives will be added this spring in order to crowd out invasive species. Easy access to the stream banks are available allowing for cutting and treating of invasives. Some spot application of herbicide is anticipated to continue to make the larger woody invasive species less able to come back from their extensive roots.
