Gifts of Stock & Other Securities

Making a gift of stocks, mutual funds, or other securities may mean significant tax benefits for you. You can potentially bypass capital gains taxes and provide a valuable income tax deduction. This effectively reduces the cost of making your gift.

Contributions of appreciated securities held for more than a year may be deductible at their average market value regardless of what you paid for them. Each gift is case-specific and you should always consult your tax advisor for questions regarding tax treatment of your gifts. If you or your broker have questions about transferring securities, please contact Jenn Tutor, Director of Development at [email protected] or (828) 697-5777, x. 209.

Donor Advised Funds

Conserving Carolina welcomes gifts from donor advised funds and regularly receives them. A donor-advised fund is like a charitable investment account, for the sole purpose of supporting charitable organizations that you care about. When you contribute cash, securities or other assets to a donor-advised fund at a public charity, like the Community Foundation of Henderson County, Fidelity Charitable, or many others, you are generally eligible to take an immediate tax deduction. Then those funds can be invested for tax-free growth and you can recommend grants to the public charity of your choice, including Conserving Carolina.

IRA Giving

If you have an IRA and are 70 1/2 or older, you can donate tax-free from your IRA to Conserving Carolina. This may also help you meet your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD), thus lowering your taxable income.

Benefits of an IRA Qualified Charitable Distribution:

  • If you are age 70 and ½ and older, you can transfer up to $100,000 annually from an IRA directly to a qualified charity.
  • You can satisfy your required minimum distribution (RMD) for the year.
  • You can reduce your taxable income, even if you do not itemize deductions.
  • You pay no taxes on the transfer.
  • Your gift to Conserving Carolina will make a meaningful impact upon the conservation and land protection in western NC

To take advantage of the IRA charitable distribution, your gift must be sent directly from your IRA manager to Conserving Carolina at 847 Case Street, Hendersonville, NC 28792.

Legacy Giving

You can leave a legacy for future generations by including Conserving Carolina in your estate plans. Again, you have a range of options that can help you achieve your financial goals.
