Tannery Park Volunteer Workday
March 3, 2022 @ 10:00 am - 1:00 pm
Background Info:
Tannery Park is a 36 acre park located on the former site of the Transylvania Tannery in the Rosenwald neighborhood of Brevard. This park is supposed to represent a montane alluvial (mountain floodplain) forest but instead it is overrun with a harmful non-native invasive plant species, Chinese privet. These non-native invasives are choking out the typical floodplain trees such as black walnut, black cherry, and sycamore trees. In order to transform this landscape, the non-native invasive species must first be controlled.
Workday Description:
We will be reviving this mountain floodplain property by removing non-native invasive plant species such as Chinese privet. We will remove these plants by cutting them at their base and applying a small amount of herbicide directly to the cut surface.
