Saluda Library Speaker Series: Coyote Conflict Management – Tools for Landowners

April 13, 2027 @ 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm

Date: April 13, 2027

Time: 2:00 p.m.

Location: Polk County Public Libraries, Saluda Branch

Speaker: Mark Ray, NCWRC Engagement Program Specialist

Coyotes have become a familiar part of the landscape across North Carolina, but their presence can raise plenty of questions—and sometimes concerns—for landowners and residents. Where did coyotes come from, how did they become established in North Carolina, and what role do they play in our landscape today?

Join Mark Ray, Engagement Program Specialist with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, for an informative look at coyotes in North Carolina. Learn more about coyote behavior and ecology, the impacts they can have on wildlife, livestock, pets, and people, and why conflicts sometimes occur. Mark will also discuss practical tools and strategies landowners can use to reduce conflicts and better coexist with coyotes.

Whether you regularly hear coyotes calling after dark, have spotted one on your property, or simply want to better understand this adaptable predator, this program will provide useful information about living alongside coyotes in North Carolina.

A native of the North Carolina Appalachian Mountains, Mark Ray has been an avid outdoorsman and advocate for the outdoors throughout his life. His desire to share his love and knowledge of the natural world led him to join the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission (NCWRC) as a Wildlife Enforcement Officer in March 2007. During his career with the NCWRC, Mark has worked across the state—from Manteo to Murphy—developing an even greater appreciation for North Carolina and its diverse wildlife resources. Since September 2016, he has served in the agency’s education division as an educator, coordinator, and program developer, helping connect people with wildlife and the outdoors through engaging educational programs.

Mark lives in Macon County with his wife and best friend, who is also an active NCWRC volunteer. He remains committed to providing quality educational programs and sharing his knowledge and enthusiasm for North Carolina’s wildlife with people across the state.

The Saluda Library Speaker Series programs are made possible thanks to our partnership with the Polk County Public Libraries Systems.
