Winter Reflections and Gratitude

A message from our Planned Giving Officer Sierra Hoisington

Dear Friend,

Winter is officially here—there’s no denying it. The air is crisp, our pace has slowed, and it’s time to embrace the season’s quiet gifts (and maybe an extra layer or two). After the whirlwind of challenges we’ve faced—looking at you, Hurricane Helene—this winter feels like the break we all need. A chance to catch our breath, find a little stillness, and maybe even enjoy the occasional snow day (fingers crossed).

Winter, for all its frosty edges, has a way of reminding us to appreciate the rare moments of tranquility. I’ll admit, I often daydream about sunny days and the smell of spring blooms, but this year, I’m trying something new. Instead of counting the days until warmer weather, I’m leaning into winter as a time to recharge—a season to rest and prepare for what’s next.

Case in point: the other morning, my rescue poodle Kevin and I set out on our usual walk, and I decided to reframe my grumbling about the cold. Instead of dreading the icy air, I treated it like my very own outdoor cold plunge (invigorating, if not exactly by choice). Kevin, ever the optimist, didn’t seem bothered. Together, we watched squirrels digging up their secret acorns, listened to birds chirping (surely mocking their migrating friends), and spotted a Cooper’s Hawk bouncing through the neighborhood trees. It was a moment of unexpected beauty—and a good reminder that nature’s magic is always there if we take the time to notice.

Speaking of magic, you make so much of it possible. As a supporter of Conserving Carolina, you’re helping protect the wild places that give us these moments of wonder. Thanks to you, hawks have healthy hunting grounds, salamanders are finding safe habitats, and countless people are discovering the joy of exploring conserved lands.

Thank you for being part of this work. Together, we’re building something beautiful—a brighter, wilder future for us all.

Sincerely,

Sierra Hoisington
