Trail Update: Openings, Continued Closures, and Community Support

trail update

Hurricane Helene left a significant impact on our trails and the surrounding communities. While we’re working diligently to restore access to our beloved outdoor spaces, it’s important to approach these areas with caution and respect for the ongoing recovery efforts.

Trail Reopenings & Access Information

We’re excited to announce the reopening of Strawberry Gap Trail and Trombatore Trail! However, we urge visitors to exercise caution as trail conditions may still be affected by storm damage. Please be mindful of potential hazards like downed trees and debris.

Access

All roads through Gerton – including Rt. 74-A and Bearwallow Mountain Road – are closed to non-essential traffic, and there are checkpoints in place to enforce this closure.

The Strawberry Gap trailhead is located before you reach the restricted area if you approach from Fairview, and you can access Trombatore Trail if you continue hiking past the endpoint of the Strawberry Gap Trail. You can also drive to the Trombatore trailhead if you don’t pass through Gerton.

Important Trail Closures

Due to the extensive damage caused by Hurricane Helene, all other Conserving Carolina trails remain closed, including:

These closures are necessary to protect visitors, the local community, and the environment. Please respect these closures and avoid entering closed areas.

Supporting the Community

The Gerton community is recovering from the worst impacts of Hurricane Helene and we ask that you show respect to this community. We encourage you to show your support by donating to the Gerton Volunteer Fire Department. Their tireless efforts have been invaluable in responding to the aftermath of the storm.

By following these guidelines and supporting the affected communities, we can work together to ensure a safe and responsible return to the outdoors.
