The Power of Small Things

A message from our Planned Giving Officer Sierra Hoisington and Development Manager Melissa Atherton

Lately, the world feels overwhelming. The headlines are heavy, the pace of life is relentless, and it can seem like the problems we face—environmental, social, personal—are just too big to tackle.

Maybe you’ve felt that way too.

A while back, I started taking daily walks just to clear my head. At first, it was just for peace of mind, a chance to breathe. But I started noticing trash along the roadside and in the woods. One day I brought a bag with me and started picking it up. Just a few pieces. Nothing heroic.

But I kept doing it. A little every day.

And slowly, something shifted. The road got cleaner. I started noticing birds I hadn’t seen before. Neighbors waved more often. That one small act—done repeatedly—helped me feel like I could still make a difference.

Sometimes, it’s the little things that make the biggest difference. Picking up a piece of trash on the trail. Sending a quick “thinking of you” text to a friend. Smiling at a stranger. These small acts may seem insignificant on their own, but over time, they build connection, community, and care for the world around us.

The same is true when it comes to giving.

Giving monthly to Conserving Carolina is one of those simple, steady actions that quietly builds into something extraordinary. Each monthly gift may feel small in the moment, but over time, your support grows into acres protected, trails built, habitats restored, and lives touched by the beauty of nature.

Just like a single drop contributes to a flowing river, your monthly gift becomes part of a larger current driving real, lasting change.

My colleague Melissa Atherton, who works alongside me here at Conserving Carolina, sees this every day. In our work, we witness the power of small, steady steps. Melissa wanted to share these five powerful reasons to consider becoming a monthly donor:

  1. Your Impact Grows Over Time

Monthly gifts accumulate into something larger than you might expect. Over the course of a year—or many years—your steady support helps protect more land and make a bigger difference than a one-time gift.

  1. You’re Part of the Conservation Story

Monthly giving creates a deeper connection with Conserving Carolina. We’ll keep you in the loop with stories, updates, and progress—so you can see the results of your ongoing generosity.

  1. You Help Us Plan with Confidence

Recurring donations give us a predictable income stream, helping us budget and plan ahead more effectively so we can move quickly when opportunities arise.

  1. You Maximize Resources

Monthly donors help reduce fundraising costs and administrative overhead. That means more of your contribution goes directly toward protecting and restoring the natural world.

  1. It’s Simple and Stress-Free

Once you set it up, monthly giving is automatic—no checks to write, no reminders needed. Just dependable support for the lands and wildlife you care about most.

In a world where so much feels out of your hands, this is something you can do. A small, meaningful step. A vote for the future.

Please consider becoming a monthly donor today. Visit our donate page and select “recurring donation” under donation frequency. If you have questions or need help getting started, contact Planned Giving Officer Sierra Hoisington at sierra@conservingcarolina.org or 828-697-5777, ext. 220.

Thank you for believing in the power of small things—and for being part of something bigger.

Thank you for all you do,

Sierra Hoisington & Melissa Atherton
