See Results of the Saluda Grade Trail Study

A year-long study of the Saluda Grade Trail was presented to the public at two meetings on Aug. 6 and 13, attended by an estimated 450 people. The proposed trail is a 31-mile rail trail following the route of the historic Saluda Grade rail line, which is now under contract. Here are the slides from the presentation, which cover:

  • A summary of public input about the trail
  • Opportunities and constraints for a potential trail along this rail line
  • Recommendations for safety at road crossings
  • Analysis of condition of bridges along the route
  • Analysis of slopes, particularly in regard to ADA accessibility
  • Breakdown of trail typologies, considering width, shoulders, materials, etc.
  • Estimated cost per mile for various types of trail construction
  • Local economic benefits and return on investment
  • Funding opportunities for construction through state and federal programs
  • Overview of the process, from the initial plan to a trail that is open to the public.
