Momentum continues to build for the Saluda Grade Trail, a transformative two-state project that will convert the historic rail corridor between Inman, South Carolina and Saluda, North Carolina into a regional trail.

Following the successful acquisition of the rail corridor in June 2025, the project has officially entered the planning phase. Project partners are now inviting the public to attend a Community Information Forum on Thursday, April 23, 2026, from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM at the Polk County High School Auditorium in Columbus, NC.

The forum will provide an opportunity for residents, stakeholders, and community leaders from across the corridor to learn about the project’s progress and stay engaged as planning moves forward.

The Saluda Grade Trail is being spearheaded by two local nonprofits—Conserving Carolina in NC and PAL: Play, Advocate, Live Well in SC.

“Conserving Carolina and PAL have been working together to make sure this project is shaped by the communities it will serve,” said Summer Flynn, Conserving Carolina’s Saluda Grade Trail Manager.

“The April 23 forum is an opportunity to share what we’ve heard, where we’re headed, and how people can continue to be part of the process.”

Laura Ringo, executive director of PAL, says,“At PAL, we are proud to be part of projects like the Saluda Grade Trail that will bring people together, connecting communities from Upstate South Carolina to Western North Carolina.”

Attendees will have the opportunity to:

  • Connect with trail representatives and project partners
  • Learn about community benefits and regional impacts
  • Understand how to get involved in future phases
  • Hear updates on project status and next steps

Planning Phase Underway

The Saluda Grade Trail project completed a comprehensive feasibility study in 2025, which outlined key opportunities and considerations for the corridor. While this study provides a strong foundation, final decisions regarding trail design, infrastructure, and implementation have not yet been made.

The project is currently focused on planning and design, including engineering work now underway on the South Carolina portion of the corridor led by Seamon Whiteside. This phase will help determine key elements such as trail alignment, access points, and user experience.

Community Engagement Driving the Vision

Saluda Grade Trail

Over the past year, a project team supported by an Appalachian Regional Commission ARISE grant has conducted an extensive public engagement process, including surveys, interviews, roundtables, and public meetings. Input from hundreds of residents and stakeholders is directly informing strategic plans for ongoing engagement and strengthened local economies.

The Saluda Grade Trail is envisioned not only as a recreational corridor, but as a shared community asset that supports local economies, celebrates regional heritage, and promotes health and wellness.

Community members are encouraged to attend the April 23 forum to stay informed and help shape the future of the trail.
