Landrum Library Speaker Series: Carolina Wild!

Date: August 19, 2025
Time: 6:00 p.m.
Location: Landrum Library
Speaker: Melissa Fuentes, Clemson museum curator
South Carolina is a treasure trove of diverse ecosystems, offering us a rich tapestry of wildlife. This program aims to introduce participants to the native mammals, reptiles and amphibians, fish, insects, and birds of South Carolina, while emphasizing the importance of preservation and conservation and fostering a deeper appreciation for the natural world and inspire active involvement in conservation efforts.
Melissa Fuentes was raised in Eagle Pass, TX, a small border town nestled against the rugged beauty of the Texas hill country. Her childhood was filled with adventure—hunting, catching armadillos and snakes, and immersing herself in the wild landscapes that shaped her love for the natural world. That passion soon extended beyond exploration and into academia, where she developed a deep curiosity for science, literature, and the arts.
After high school, Melissa pursued her education at two universities, earning degrees in Biology, English, and the arts—all centered on her lifelong commitment to teaching others about nature. Her academic journey led her to further studies, but fate intervened when she was offered a position at Clemson University. As the curator of the Bob and Betsy Museum of Natural History, she found the perfect space to merge scholarship with storytelling. Eight years later, she remains the same curious, fearless explorer, dedicated to educating and inspiring others through the wonders of the natural world.

The Landrum Library Speaker Series programs are made possible thanks to our partnership with the Spartanburg County Public Libraries.
