French Broad River Series Part 1: EXPLORE! Hike DuPont State Recreational Forest

March 4, 2023 @ 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

The N.C. Cooperative Extension, Transylvania County Center and Conserving Carolina are offering a series of lectures, field trips, and service days to better acquaint the public with the French Broad River, considered one of the oldest rivers in the world, and give you ways to explore and act on its behalf.

The series is divided into 5 topics – March – June; each topic will have lecture (LEARN), field trip (EXPLORE), and service day (ACT) components. Lectures will be presented by local experts, authors, and scientists. Field trips will highlight the topics introduced by the speakers, and service days will act upon those topics.

The first part of our series: EXPLORE the lifestyles of the early settlers in the French Broad River Watershed!

Join Trevor Freeman, Public Programs Director with the Western NC Historical Association on a hike in DuPont State Recreational Forest, to explore the lifestyles of the early settlers in the French Broad River Watershed. He will discuss the Cherokee, the Walton War, turnpikes, and hotels. This hike of approximately 3 miles will include a stop at an old quarry, and a discussion about moonshining in the area. We’ll finish up the hike with a visit to Cedar Mountain Moonshine where we will have a moonshine tasting!

Registration is required and space is limited, reserve your spot here. Please contact Kim Gundler at [email protected] with any questions.
