Background Info:
Put under a conservation easement with Conserving Carolina in 2018, Carolina Memorial Sanctuary is an 11-acre conservation & green cemetery passionate about protecting the land and conserving the environment. In addition to eco-burials, CMS is a public park that strives to improve the land. The neighboring property, under a conservation easement and owned by the Barkwells, is partnering with Conserving Carolina and CMS to work on various conservation projects, including: stream restoration, storm water retention, a pollinator meadow, bluebird boxes, invasive species removal, native plantings, and stream restoration
Workday Description:
Volunteers will be removing various non-native invasive species, such as Kudzu, bamboo, Chinese Privet, Japanese Honeysuckle, and Multiflora Rose from the sanctuary. Using only mechanical techniques, volunteers will be using pruners, handsaws, and pulling to remove invasive plant species.
Volunteers must be able to walk moderate distances across rough terrain. Tools and gloves will be provided; all materials are sanitized before and after each workday. Plant ID and removal techniques will be taught on-site. You will get dirty, so make sure to wear appropriate clothing.
What to Bring:
• Water and snacks or lunch
• Leather Work Gloves (if you have a personal pair)
• Small Backpack for Carrying Tools
• Change of Clothes for Drive Home (recommended)
What to Wear:
• Closed toed shoes that can navigate off-trail terrain and can get dirty
• Work pants; dress for the weather
