Mark moved to Western North Carolina as a teen and graduated from Brevard High School.  He found the outdoors to be the perfect playground for his interests in hiking, camping, and fishing.  He graduated from UNC-Wilmington with degrees in Marine Biology and Computer Science and worked many years at N.C. State University combining his biology interests with the burgeoning use of the personal computer.  He met and married a Transylvania County native and they felt the calling of the mountains and moved back in the mid 90’s to raise their family here and care for aging parents.  They live on 67 acres in Transylvania County.

Mark is president of the Friends of Ecusta Trail board and has previously served 12 years on the Carolina Mountain Land Conservancy/Conserving Carolina boards.  He is currently chair of the Land Protection Committee where he has served for more years than he can count and serves on the Public Policy and French Broad River Stewards committees.
