Dave Scherping isn’t a native of Polk County, but he got here as soon as he could. After completing a Bachelor’s degree in Biology Education from Illinois State University, he moved to Tryon in 1993 for a teaching position at Saluda School. This was the beginning of a 30 year career with Polk County Schools. After receiving a Masters degree in Instructional Technology from Western Carolina University, much of Dave’s career focused on the effective implementation of instructional technology into our classrooms. Dave expanded his focus to include supervision of the required state and federal testing programs, effective operations, and project management. Dave’s public education career ended with his retirement as Assistant Superintendent in 2023.
In addition to his work with the schools, Dave is a very active member of the Polk County community. He is one of the founding members of the PANGAEA fiber networking company, a long time Board Member for Outreach, a member of the Board of Trustees for Isothermal Community College, and the current President of the Rotary Club of Tryon. Dave feels a responsibility to ensure Polk County continues to be a place that attracts people. A strong school system, good employment opportunities, and the beautiful surroundings make this a great place to live.
Although Dave and his wife Carlann live in Columbus, you won’t find them there very often. They spend a great deal of their time hiking, biking, and kayaking across Western North Carolina and the surrounding area.
Like many in the area, the Scherping’s experienced first hand the damage Hurricane Helene caused on their property in Lake Lure and their church in Bat Cave. Since September they have been supporting the recovery work in Bat Cave. There is still so much to be done, but it is amazing to watch the progress being made each day.
