A Colorful Tapestry of Generosity

Throughout the year, I am constantly amazed by the beautiful and unexpected colors found in nature. The deep purple of ironweed takes my breath away every time I see it. It’s the most delicious jewel tone I can imagine, and one I can actually touch. Even pokeweed has that same effect on me. Yes, it’s one of those plants most of us are probably pulling out before it takes over places we never intended it to grow (unless, of course, we’re leaving a few for the birds). But that combination of magenta and green? Those are colors I can’t find anywhere else.
My favorite expression of color, though, comes in the fall, and it requires us to look up, then down.
Fall leaves are unmatched, not just for their beauty but for the feelings they stir in us. The other day, I picked up a white oak leaf from my deck and was struck by the reds and greens dancing across its surface. It looked like abstract art, as if a painter had taken a brush to a palette and let the colors wander wherever they pleased. Greens gave way to reds, then reds to green, each winding into the other in unexpected patterns.
I’m not sure I had ever taken the time to notice these little intricacies before. And once I had finished admiring that leaf, I picked up another. Maybe it came from the very same tree, yet its pattern was entirely different. The colors were familiar, but the arrangement was all its own.
Changes in light, shade, and the breakdown of chlorophyll help create these unique patterns, leaving some leaves speckled, others swirled, and still others looking almost marbled. No two seem quite alike, and that’s part of the magic. The reds, yellows, and oranges, along with our bittersweet goodbye to green, make fall extraordinary. Each color contributes something different, and together they create something none could achieve alone.
If you’ve read any of our Branches of Giving pieces before, you know we love a good metaphor. And as I admired those oak leaves, I couldn’t help but think about the many ways our supporters choose to give to Conserving Carolina. Just as every leaf has its own pattern, every gift has its own story. The reasons we give, the resources we have available, and the ways we choose to make a difference may look different from person to person. But together, they help sustain something much bigger than any one of us.

Some gifts provide the colors we need right now.
Cash donations are often the most straightforward way to support conservation. Whether you make a year-end gift, respond to an appeal, or contribute to a project close to your heart, your generosity helps fund the work happening right here in our region. These gifts give Conserving Carolina the flexibility to respond to immediate needs, protect important places, and restore the natural communities that make our mountains and foothills so special.
Other gifts grow in value over time.
Gifts of appreciated stock can be a tax-savvy way to support conservation. If you own stocks that have increased in value, donating them directly to Conserving Carolina may allow you to avoid capital gains taxes you would otherwise owe if you sold the shares first, while potentially qualifying for a charitable income tax deduction. It’s a way to turn the growth of your investments into something lasting for the places you love.
Some supporters give through their donor-advised funds.
A donor-advised fund, or DAF, offers a convenient way to organize your charitable giving. You can contribute to your fund, receive a tax benefit when eligible, and recommend grants to the organizations and causes that matter most to you over time. If protecting our region is one of your priorities, recommending a grant to Conserving Carolina is a simple way to put those charitable dollars to work.
And then there are gifts that seem to have a little magic of their own.
Some of our supporters have discovered the benefits of giving through retirement accounts. If you are 70½ or older, you may be eligible to make a qualified charitable distribution (QCD) directly from your traditional IRA to an eligible charity. You can also name Conserving Carolina as a beneficiary of an IRA or another retirement account, directing those assets toward conservation in the future. Depending on your circumstances, these gifts can be a particularly meaningful way to support the places you love while making thoughtful use of your retirement savings.
Some gifts arrive a little at a time, season after season.
Monthly giving is a wonderful reminder that generosity doesn’t have to happen all at once to make a big difference. A recurring gift provides steady, dependable support throughout the year, helping Conserving Carolina plan ahead and continue its work through every season. Even a modest monthly contribution can add up to a meaningful impact over time. Like the quiet, steady work of nature itself, these gifts help good things grow.
And some gifts are planted for a future we may never see ourselves.
Planned gifts, such as naming Conserving Carolina in your will or estate plans, offer a way to carry your love of nature into the future. Other options may include naming Conserving Carolina as a beneficiary of a retirement account or life insurance policy. These gifts allow you to reflect your values in the legacy you leave behind, helping ensure that the forests, rivers, trails, and wildlife we treasure today will be here for generations to come.
There is no single right way to give, just as there is no single right way for a leaf to look. The best approach is the one that fits your circumstances and reflects what matters most to you. Some gifts meet an immediate need. Others grow steadily over time. And some quietly take root today, with the hope of making a difference long into the future.
What makes a forest beautiful isn’t the presence of one perfect color. It’s the interplay of countless colors, shapes, and textures, each adding something to the whole. Our conservation community is much the same. Every supporter brings something unique, and every gift helps create a stronger, more resilient future for the places we love.
As you take in the colors of fall this year, I hope you’ll pause to notice the details. Look closely at a leaf you might otherwise pass by. Appreciate the differences, the unexpected combinations, and the beauty that emerges when everything comes together.
And if you find yourself thinking about the legacy you want to leave, know that there are many ways to make your mark. Whatever form your generosity takes, you are helping ensure that the beauty, wonder, and richness of our natural world will continue to inspire others long after this season has passed.
