Ruth Jones Scholarship Information and Application Portal
Transylvania County pubic high school seniors can now apply for the Ruth Jones Scholarships, which provide funding for higher education in the fields of health or environmental science. Two students, one from Brevard High School and one from Rosman High School will be awarded the one-time scholarships of $1,500 each. The scholarship was established in honor of the late Ruth Elaine Jones, a lifelong Transylvania County resident, with the purpose of carrying on her love of the outdoors and her commitment to public health.
The scholarships provide financial assistance to students who wish to pursue a 4-year degree in health or environmental sciences at an accredited university, college, or technical college. Applicants must intend to pursue areas of study that include but are not limited to: biology, environmental science, health education, pre-medicine, nursing, agriculture, forestry, natural resource conservation, or wildlife science.

Ruth Jones graduated from Brevard High School and UNC-Greensboro and worked as a health educator for the county health department for over 30 years. She was known for her deep appreciation of the natural world and her willingness to help others in her community. Jones carried on her legacy of caring for nature with a generous bequest to Conserving Carolina. Conserving Carolina has dedicated a portion of this funding for the annual Ruth Jones Scholarship.
Applicants will be chosen based on academic achievement, extracurricular activities, community service, and determination to overcome challenging circumstances. The deadline to submit your application is April 10th, 2026 by 11:59 pm.
