Karsten, born and raised in Cary, North Carolina, moved to the western part of the state 4 years ago to attend UNC Asheville, where he earned a BS in Environmental Studies. While developing his knowledge of ecology and environmental biology at UNCA, Karsten interned with MountainTrue’s Public Lands team. This experience furthered his knowledge of western North Carolina plant identification and taught him new skills while out in the field. Working with MountainTrue, one of his favorite tasks was using a GPS to record the location data of invasive plants along hiking trails for future removal. Karsten enjoys spending his free time exploring the outdoors hiking in the Southern Appalachians as well as playing music with his friends.
