Walnut Creek Preserve: Kudzu Eradication Workday
August 20, 2021 @ 8:30 am - 11:00 am
*RSVP Required*
Background Info:
Walnut Creek Preserve offers 1,590 acres of conservation land, featuring amazing views of the Hickory Nut Gorge, a waterfall, and an extensive trail network. This preserve is being managed to restore native hardwoods forests, a rich habitat for many plants and animals. The protected land also provides abundant outdoor space for environmental education and a trail network for the surrounding equestrian community.
Workday Description:
Volunteers will be removing the non-native invasive species, Japanese kudzu, from within the preserve. Volunteers will be using hand tools to remove kudzu crowns from the soil; crowns are vital life support for the plant and their removal is essential in successfully eradicating kudzu.
Volunteers will also cut kudzu vines from trees, which will stop the upward growth of kudzu and free trees from the dangers of entanglement.
Volunteers must be able to walk moderate distances across rough terrain. Tools and gloves will be provided; all materials are sanitized before and after each workday. Plant ID and removal techniques will be taught on-site. You will get dirty, so make sure to wear appropriate clothing.
What to Bring:
• Water
• Snacks/Lunch
• Leather Work Gloves (if you have a personal pair)
• Small Backpack for Carrying Tools
• Change of Clothes for Drive Home (recommended)
What to Wear:
• Closed toed shoes that can navigate off-trail terrain and can get dirty
• Work pants; dress for the weather
