Come join us for our next volunteer only hike led by Mike Hopping, of the Asheville Mushroom Club, at the Florence Nature Preserve. July is an excellent month for fungi!

Mike Hopping is an amateur mycologist, writer, and retired medical doctor. He has been a member of the Asheville Mushroom club since 2011 when he first became interested in mushrooms. (Lucking into a motherlode of morels has a tendency to do that to you.) For several years he chaired the club’s foray committee and produced a “Mushroom of the Month” feature for its newsletter, Sporadic News.
More recently he and another senior club member launched an ongoing training program for AMC’s next generation of mushroom identifiers. In collaboration with that ID group and the Matheny Lab at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, he is principal investigator on a three-year project to provide the state of North Carolina with an inventory of macrofungi resident in Mt. Mitchell State Park. He is also a coauthor of A Field Guide to the Mushrooms of the Carolinas.

Must be a regular volunteer to attend!

Dress for the weather, bring water, snacks/lunch and a mushroom guide if you have it.
