Landslides in WNC – Where, Why, and What Can We Do?

Speaker: Jennifer Bauer, L.G., Appalachian Landslide Consultants, PLLC

This talk will cover general information about landslides in western North Carolina, the types of landslides most prevalent, where they occur, and what triggers them. It will illustrate what we know about landslides through examples, stories, and photographs. You’ll come away with a better understanding of how landslides affect WNC, and how we can protect ourselves from these natural and human-induced hazards.

Jennifer Bauer, L.G is a principal geologist and co-owner of Appalachian Landslide Consultants, PLLC in Asheville, NC. She started ALC in December of 2011, after working with the North Carolina Geological Survey’s Landslide Hazard Mapping team since 2005. Prior to working the state, Jennifer gained experience at MACTEC Engineering & Consulting (now AMEC Foster Wheeler) in Raleigh, NC, after getting her B.S. in Geology from UNC-Chapel Hill in 2001. She is also Past President of the Association of Environmental & Engineering Geologists, an international professional organization dedicated to applied geology. Jennifer has over 17 years of engineering geology experience and is passionate about applying that experience to help protect the lives and property of the citizens of western North Carolina.
