Speaker Series: Bird Migration in Western North Carolina

September 14, 2019 @ 10:30 am - 12:00 pm

Date: September 14, 2019

Time: 10:30 a.m.

Location: Anne Elizabeth Suratt Nature Center at Walnut Creek Preserve

Speaker: Simon Thompson, owner of Ventures Birding Tours

Bird migration of land birds can be impressive in the western part of our state. With the correct weather conditions streams of warbler, vireos, thrushes and tanagers follow the mountain ridges and rivers as they move south towards their wintering grounds. Many will be young birds hatched this year making their first journey south. We will follow their sometimes perilous journey seeing how they fare. Smaller numbers of birds of prey and waterfowl also move south but not many make the long trip south over the Gulf of Mexico.

Simon owns and operates Ventures Birding Tours based in Asheville, NC. He and the rest of the leaders run many local trips around the Carolinas, as well as all around the world. Simon was born and raised in the Middle East, West and East Africa and got his education and degree in Commercial Horticulture in England, before moving to North Carolina. He is on the board of the Elisha Mitchell Audubon Society and helps to operate the Beaver Lake Bird Sanctuary in North Asheville. He and Chris have lived in Asheville for the past 20 years where they enjoy all aspects of nature, including the almost daily bear visits to their property!

Simon will lead an optional guided bird walk before the presentation. Those interested are asked to meet at the Anne Elizabeth Suratt Nature Center at Walnut Creek Preserve at 7:45 a.m. to check in.  The walk will begin at 8 a.m.  Simon will walk participants through parts of the Preserve, looking and listening for birds on the property.  Simon will share tips about how to identify birds in the field.  After the walk, participants are encouraged to stick around for Simon’s presentation! (If attending the walk, please wear appropriate clothing and footwear, bring a snack and plenty of water, and do not attempt if beyond your ability. Also, please be sure to bring any personal medication that you may require.)
