Hunting Lady’s Slipper: The Origins of the Botanical Drug Trade in Southern Appalachia with Dr. Luke Manget

September 20, 2017 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

Dr. Manget will transport us back in time to the dawn of the 20th century when the southern Appalachian region supplied around three-quarters of all indigenous medicinal plants for use in commercial medicines. In addition to exploring the history of this trade and tradition, Dr. Manget will discuss the impacts the medicinal plant industry had on local human and plant communities.

Dr. Manget has done extensive research on the role of the nineteenth-century Appalachian mountain commons in shaping Appalachian history and culture. His dissertation examines the rise and decline of markets in Appalachian wild plants and how those markets shaped people’s interactions with their environment. Dr. Manget got his undergraduate degree from Georgia Tech and PhD from University of Georgia.
