Speaker Series: Hunters in the Sky

July 9, 2019 @ 11:00 am - 1:00 pm

Date: July 9th, 2019

Time: 11:00 a.m.

Location: Landrum Library

Speaker: Carlton Burke, naturalist and educator

Throughout the ages, birds of prey have fascinated mankind. Unfortunately, some people have also viewed these magnificent birds with disfavor because of their predatory instincts. Uncontrolled shooting, trapping, loss of habitat, and pesticide poisoning have all combined to drastically reduce their numbers, some to the brink of extinction. Now, thanks to protective regulations and increased public awareness, many of these raptors are making dramatic comebacks. In this program you’ll meet some live raptors and learn about their day to day struggle to survive in our constantly changing world. This presentation is part of the Landrum Library’s Summer Reading Program for children. The program will feature live raptors as guests and will be a great program to bring your children to!

Carlton operates an educational service called “Carolina Mountain Naturalists” which specializes in presenting live animal and nature programs and displays for area schools, summer camps, and many other organizations.  He is also a state and federally licensed wildlife rehabilitator and he can be heard each Saturday morning co-hosting NATURE NEWS, a local, hour-long radio program, featuring news from the natural world around the western NC region.
