Join Conserving Carolina for an interpretive nature walk will take place on Saturday, July 17. We will offer two walks, the first will be from 10:00-11:30 a.m. and the second 12:30-2:00 p.m. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and in order to make this an enjoyable and educational experience for participants, space is limited to 15 for each session and pre-registration is required. Participants are also required keep a physical distance of 6 feet or more and to wear a mask when around the group.
This walk will feature Beth Button, Community Outreach & Summer Camp Coordinator at the Watershed Ecology Center at the University of South Carolina (USC) Upstate, and Dr. Jack Turner, professor emeritus from USC Upstate and founder of the Watershed Ecology Center at USC Upstate, will lead participants on a moderate walk through the 2,100 acre Preserve discussing the watershed, how what we do on the land effects chemical and bacteria parameters in the water and aquatic life. We’ll be exploring Trillium Creek, a tributary to Walnut Creek, for macroinvertebrates, learning to identify them, and using them to help indicate the health of the Creek! Please be prepared to look for and catch some small animals…and to get wet!!
Beth graduated from Western Maryland College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education and Studio Arts and began a career in Environmental Education, traveling around the country learning and teaching about our many different ecosystems and appreciation for our natural resources. Beth currently serves as the Community Outreach & Summer Camp Coordinator for the Watershed Ecology Center at the University of South Carolina Upstate. In her free time, Beth also volunteers with the Opossum’s Pouch Rescue and Rehab, raising, releasing, and rehabbing opossum’s.
Jack is a retired microbiology and ecology professor from USC Upstate, where he taught for 40 years. He is the founder and director of the Watershed Ecology Center at USC Upstate.
For your safety, do not attempt this activity if it is beyond your ability and experience. Participants should wear appropriate clothing and footwear and bring a mask, snack, water, and any personal medication that may be required.
