Guided Nature Walk at Walnut Creek Preserve
November 20, 2021 @ 12:30 pm - 2:00 pm
Join Conserving Carolina for an Interpretive Nature Walk on Saturday, November 20. Bill Jacobs will lead participants on a moderate walk through a portion of the 2,100 acre preserve, discussing the geology of this special area.
We will offer two walks, the first will be from 10:00-11:30 a.m. and the second 12:30-2:00 p.m. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and in order to make this an enjoyable and educational experience for participants, space is limited to 15 for each session and pre-registration is required. Non-vaccinated individuals should wear a mask when around the group, and participants should try to maintain a physical distance of 6 feet from people outside of their group.
Join Bill Jacobs as he explains the extraordinary geologic processes that produced the array of mountains and waterfalls surrounding Walnut Creek Preserve. Bill is the author of Whence These Special Places? The Geology of Cashiers, Highlands & Panthertown Valley. While the book focuses on the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau, in doing so it explains the geologic processes that have molded the Blue Ridge as a whole, as well as the Piedmont. As reflected in his book, Bill’s particular interest is how the unique appearances of many of our most popular natural features are explained by differences in their geologic history. For this program, he will focus on Walnut Creek Falls and nearby mountains that can be viewed from Walnut Creek Preserve. He will also discuss iconic locations across southwestern North Carolina, including Looking Glass Rock and Falls, Shining Rock, Devil’s Courthouse, Craggy Pinnacle, and Pearson’s and Little Bearwallow Falls, as well as several unique features on the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau. Like his book, the program will use language and concepts comfortable for non-scientists. Participants will be able to ask questions about both the book and the geology and there will be copies of the book available for purchase.
You can learn more about Bill and his book at www.GreatRockPress.com.
