Guided Nature Walk at Walnut Creek Preserve
September 18 @ 12:30 pm - 2:00 pm
Nature Walks at Walnut Creek Preserve
Join Conserving Carolina for an interpretive nature walk will take place on Saturday, September 18. We will offer two walks, the first will be from 10:00-11:30 a.m. and the second 12:30-2:00 p.m. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and in order to make this an enjoyable and educational experience for participants, space is limited to 15 for each session and pre-registration is required. Non-vaccinated individuals should wear a mask when around the group, and participants should try to maintain a physical distance of 6 feet from people outside of their group.
Charlotte Caplan has been collecting, studying, identifying, and eating fungi for over 40 years, in both Europe and North America. She started learning about mushrooms in Britain in 1975, and she was mainly self-taught because the British have no tradition of collecting wild mushrooms and there are very few clubs available. Upon moving to the USA, to Savannah, GA, in 1986 there still seemed to be no one else interested in fungi. But then, after moving to Asheville in 1998, it was like moving to the mushroom capital of the world! There were not only huge varieties of fungi to be found, but also an active mushroom club!
Ms. Caplan is the past president of the Asheville Mushroom Club and she has presented to many mushroom clubs, led numerous field trips, and is an instructor for the NC Arboretum’s Blue Ridge Naturalist certification program.
For your safety, do not attempt this activity if it is beyond your ability and experience. Participants should wear appropriate clothing and footwear and bring a mask, snack, water, and any personal medication that may be required.
In case of inclement weather, please contact Pam Torlina by e-mail, [email protected], by 8 a.m. on the day of the walk and/or check the Conserving Carolina website or Facebook page to see if the walk will take place.
Space is limited. RSVP required by email! For more information or to RSVP, email [email protected]. More information and details will follow after registration.
