SUMMARY:Landrum Library Speaker Series: Our Vanishing Biodiversity and How to Save It
DESCRIPTION:Photo Credit: Sebastiao Solgado \nDate: April 21\, 2026 \nTime: 6:00 p.m. \nLocation: Landrum Library \nSpeaker: Dr. Wade Worthen\, Professor of Biology at Furman University \nThe biosphere made and maintains the environmental conditions conducive to life. But many of the components of the biosphere—species—are threatened with extinction. This presentation will present an overview of the causes and potential solution to this extinction crisis. \nDr. Wade B. Worthen is the Rose J. Forgione Professor of Biology at Furman University.  He has taught ecology at Furman and conducted research on patterns of diversity for 38 years.  His most recent research focuses on the patterns of diversity in dragonfly communities in South Carolina and Costa Rica\, which are important components of both aquatic and terrestrial communities and may be important bellwethers of ecosystem integrity. \n \nThe Landrum Library Speaker Series programs are made possible thanks to our partnership with the Spartanburg County Public Libraries. \nContact Pam Torlina\, pam@conservingcarolina.org\, with questions or for more information.

SUMMARY:Etowah Library Speaker Series: Hummingbirds - Flying Jewels
DESCRIPTION:Date: April 22\, 2026 \nTime: 2:00 pm \nLocation: Etowah Library \nSpeaker: Pam Torlina\, Community Engagement Director for Conserving Carolina \nDiscover the astonishing world of hummingbirds—tiny\, dazzling birds whose speed\, beauty\, and biology defy belief. This program explores their iridescent colors\, remarkable flight abilities\, extreme metabolisms\, and fascinating behaviors\, from migration and torpor to courtship and nesting. Learn why hummingbirds are found only in the Western Hemisphere\, how they evolved alongside flowering plants\, and what makes the Andes a hotspot for their diversity. The presentation also highlights species found in North America\, including rare winter visitors to the Southeast\, and offers practical ways you can support hummingbirds in your own backyard. A captivating blend of natural history\, evolution\, and conservation\, this program reveals why hummingbirds truly deserve their name—flying jewels. \nPam Torlina is the Community Engagement Director at Conserving Carolina. With over 30 years of experience as a field biologist\, naturalist\, and outdoor educator\, Pam has dedicated nearly two decades to advancing the Conservancy’s mission in the Carolinas. She holds a B.S. in Biology from the University of South Carolina Upstate\, and before joining Conserving Carolina she worked with a variety of conservation and education organizations — including South Carolina State Parks\, the City of Greenville Parks & Recreation Youth Bureau\, and Haliburton Forest in Ontario\, Canada. \n*Space is limited and pre-registration is required by visiting the Etowah Library’s calendar of events at this link. \n \nThe Etowah Library Speaker Series programs are made possible thanks to our partnership with the Henderson County Public Library. \nContact Pam Torlina\, pam@conservingcarolina.org\, with questions or for more information.
