SUMMARY:Saluda Library Speaker Series: Environmentally Friendly Landscaping
DESCRIPTION:Date: May 12\, 2026 \nTime: 2:00 p.m. \nLocation: Polk County Public Libraries\, Saluda Branch \nSpeaker: Steve Pettis\, Commercial and Consumer Horticulture Agent with the Henderson County Cooperative Extension \n\nJoin us for a presentation on Environmentally Friendly Landscaping from Henderson County Extension Agent and host of the Gardening in the Mountains Radio Show and Podcast\, Steve Pettis. Steve will discuss environmentally friendly garden techniques that you can implement this spring to make your garden a friendly place for wildlife including pollinating insects. Steve believes at least part of our landscapes should mimic nature as much as possible. Healthy urban and suburban environments can be achieved by reducing lawns\, holistic tree health care and protection\, using biorational pest control methods and increasing biodiversity utilizing native plants in naturalistically designed plantings. \nSteve has been in the plant business for 35 years and holds an undergraduate degree in horticulture and a Master’s degree in plant protection and pest management. As a NC State University County Agent\, he works with home gardeners\, landscape professionals and local municipalities to make our built environments more natural and environmentally friendly. \n \nThe Saluda Library Speaker Series programs are made possible thanks to our partnership with the Polk County Public Libraries Systems. \nContact Pam Torlina\, pam@conservingcarolina.org\, with questions or for more information.

SUMMARY:Landrum Library Speaker Series: Fungal Foundations – How Mushrooms Build the Earth Beneath Our Feet
DESCRIPTION:Date: June 16\, 2026 \nTime: 6:00 p.m. \nLocation: Landrum Library \nSpeakers: Olga Katić \nJoin Olga\, of Mushroom Mountain\, for an engaging journey into the underground world of terrestrial fungi\, with a spotlight on Stropharia rugosoannulata—the mighty King Stropharia. Discover how mushrooms act as ecosystem engineers\, transforming woody debris and organic matter into rich\, fertile soil. This lecture explores the essential role of saprophytic fungi in building soil structure\, retaining moisture\, supporting plant life\, and even cleaning up toxins. You’ll also learn about practical applications in permaculture\, gardening\, and habitat restoration using mushrooms like King Stropharia. Whether you’re a mycophile\, a conservationist\, or just fungi-curious\, this talk will leave you seeing soil in a whole new light. \nOlga grew up mushroom hunting with her relatives in Bosnia and Hercegovina. When her parents were at work\, her grandma watched her and her sister\, and they had the freedom of being in the woods all day long. At one moment they would be digging up leeches out of the fresh water well and feeding them to chickens\, and the next moment\, they would get chased by grandma’s rooster. But they also spent a lot of time picking boletes\, milk mushrooms\, and other varieties of mushrooms. They’d bring them to their grandpa and he would get rid of the ones he thought were not edible\, the rest they would cook on the wood stove and eat! Moving to the present\, Olga is the proud owner of Mushroom Mountain and she has an amazing team working with her. They produce mushroom spawn for many different edible and medicinal varieties. They also make several different medicinal mushroom extracts and medicinal mushroom honeys under the name Mycomatrix. Mushroom Mountain also runs a Wild Mushroom Food Safety Certification Program. SUMMARY:Walnut Creek Preserve Speaker Series: Indigenous Carolinians: A History from Original Peoples to Present-Day Tribes
DESCRIPTION:Date: August 15\, 2026 \nTime: 10:30 a.m. \nPresentation Location: Anne Elizabeth Suratt Nature Center at Walnut Creek Preserve \nSpeaker: David Rahahę́·tih Webb\, award-winning author\, artist\, conservationist\, scientist\, historian\, and executive director or Muddy Sneakers Outdoor Classroom \nFrom the author of the award-winning book\, The Spanish Seminole (published by The Florida Historical Society Press)\, Indigenous Carolinians offers a comprehensive\, decolonized history of the Indigenous Peoples of the Carolinas\, focusing on four ethnolinguistic groups. Using both academic and Indigenous research methods\, it explores their languages\, cultures\, and oral histories. Despite early colonization\, these groups adapted through alliances\, intermarriage\, and wars\, but faced displacement\, persecution\, and cultural erasure. Once powerful nations became scattered\, with many losing tribal identity and referring to themselves simply as “Indian.” In the 20th century\, they began reclaiming their identities and heritage. This 400-page book tells the story of that journey. \nDavid Rahahę́·tih Webb (day-vid raw-haw-HID-dee webb) is an award-winning author\, artist\, conservationist\, scientist\, and historian. He is an enrolled citizen of the Tuscarora Indians of Kahtenuaka Territories\, where he serves as a Tribal Legislative Council member\, culture carrier\, and community leader. He is a traditional and contemporary Native American artist and recipient of the Artist in Residence in Everglades fellowship in 2024. \nRSVP is requested below\, but not necessary to attend the event! SUMMARY:Landrum Library Speaker Series: The Fall Raptor Migration in our South Carolina Mountains
DESCRIPTION:Broad-winged Hawk. Photo by leppyone is licensed under CC BY 2.0. \nDate: August 18\, 2026 \nTime: 6:00 p.m. \nLocation: Landrum Library \nSpeaker: Ed Moorer\, Hawk Watch \nWe will take a look at  what  why\,  and how migrating raptors fly south during the autumn months.  Sassafras Mountain in Pickens County is one of the observational sites used to send data to Hawk Migration Association on a daily basis for the three month season  that begins just after Labor Day. Thousands of hawks could possibly be seen in one day at our state’s highest point. \nEd Moorer began the Sassafras Mountain Hawk Watch in 2015 and is currently the site coordinator. He began his career as a school teacher for 30 years and then worked at Table Rock State Park enjoying teaching for the Discover Carolina program and in the nature center.  He has volunteered with S.C. Dept. of Natural Resources as a Hunter Education Instructor and now participates  in the Conservation Education division. Ed has been counting raptors for 25 years learning from experts at Caesars Head overlook and then moving over to Sassafras Mountain.  One of his goals now is to recruit younger observers to learn and carry-on this endeavor. \n \nThe Landrum Library Speaker Series programs are made possible thanks to our partnership with the Spartanburg County Public Libraries. \nContact Pam Torlina\, pam@conservingcarolina.org\, with questions or for more information.

SUMMARY:Saluda Library Speaker Series: The Ecology of Exposure - Rock Outcrop Plant Communities in the NC Mountains
DESCRIPTION:Date: September 8\, 2026 \nTime: 2:00 p.m. \nLocation: Polk County Public Libraries\, Saluda Branch \nSpeaker: Gary Kauffman\, botanist and ecologist \nWe often admire rock outcrops from a scenic overlook or scramble across them on a favorite hike — but these dramatic landscapes are far more than just stone. Perched on ridges and cliffs throughout the western North Carolina mountains\, rock outcrops host unique plant communities shaped by elevation\, chemistry\, exposure\, and structure. \nIn this program\, we’ll explore where different outcrop types occur and how factors like pH\, slope\, and geology create distinct ecological worlds. You’ll learn how to tell them apart using a simple flow-chart key and discover the specialized plant species that cling\, bloom\, and thrive in these extreme environments. \nWhether you’re a hiker\, naturalist\, or plant enthusiast\, you’ll leave with a new way to “read” the rocks beneath your feet. \nGary Kauffman is trained as a botanist and ecologist\, with a master’s degree in botany and mycology. In 2025\, he retired from the National Forests in NC after 32 years of work. Gary’s job covered 1.4 million USFS acres from the mountains to the coast. He is currently on the board of the Asheville Botanical Garden and the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy. Gary helps to teach a week-long rock outcrop course with Dr. Laura Boggess at the Highlands Biological Station.   \n \nThe Saluda Library Speaker Series programs are made possible thanks to our partnership with the Polk County Public Libraries Systems. \nContact Pam Torlina\, pam@conservingcarolina.org\, with questions or for more information.
