In this presentation\, we’ll explore the fascinating group of birds known as aerial insectivores and the remarkable adaptations that make them masters of flight. Featuring species found across Western North Carolina including the Chimney Swifts\, Barn Swallows\, and Common Nighthawks\, we’ll take a closer look at how wing shape\, feeding strategies\, and behavior help these birds hunt in midair. Along the way\, discover how insect loss and changing landscapes are shaping the future of these remarkable birds and what we can do locally to help keep our skies full of life. \nSarah grew up in Brevard\, NC\, and spent much of her childhood exploring the natural spaces surrounding her home. This time spent observing and falling in love with her local ecosystem contributed to her drive to pursue a career in conservation. She is beyond thrilled to start her career here in Western NC as Community Engagement and Education Associate with AmeriCorps Project Conserve at Conserving Carolina. \nSarah graduated from UNC Wilmington in May 2025 with master’s degrees in public administration and environmental science\, building upon her knowledge of environmental management and policy from her undergraduate studies at UNC Asheville. She looks forward to using her skills in these fields to advance Conserving Carolina’s mission. SUMMARY:Landrum Library Speaker Series: The Fall Raptor Migration in our South Carolina Mountains

Photo by leppyone is licensed under CC BY 2.0. \nDate: August 18\, 2026 \nTime: 6:00 p.m. \nLocation: Landrum Library \nSpeaker: Ed Moorer\, Hawk Watch \nWe will take a look at  what  why\,  and how migrating raptors fly south during the autumn months.  Sassafras Mountain in Pickens County is one of the observational sites used to send data to Hawk Migration Association on a daily basis for the three month season  that begins just after Labor Day. Thousands of hawks could possibly be seen in one day at our state’s highest point. \nEd Moorer began the Sassafras Mountain Hawk Watch in 2015 and is currently the site coordinator. He began his career as a school teacher for 30 years and then worked at Table Rock State Park enjoying teaching for the Discover Carolina program and in the nature center.  He has volunteered with S.C. Dept. of Natural Resources as a Hunter Education Instructor and now participates  in the Conservation Education division. Ed has been counting raptors for 25 years learning from experts at Caesars Head overlook and then moving over to Sassafras Mountain.  One of his goals now is to recruit younger observers to learn and carry-on this endeavor. \n \nThe Landrum Library Speaker Series programs are made possible thanks to our partnership with the Spartanburg County Public Libraries. \nContact Pam Torlina\, pam@conservingcarolina.org\, with questions or for more information.
