DESCRIPTION:Date: June 9\, 2026 \nTime: 2:00 p.m. \nLocation: Polk County Public Libraries\, Saluda Branch \nSpeaker: Carlton Burke\, naturalist and educator \nThere are certain species of animals that many people fear and hate\, largely due to prejudice and misinformation.  Far from being pests or villains however\, many of these creatures are actually beneficial to man and play very important roles in the natural world. Assembled in this presentation are many of those animals that we seem to love . . . TO HATE!  \nThis program will feature LIVE animals and will be great for the whole family\, so bring the kids! \nCarlton Burke is a licensed wildlife rehabilitator who operates Carolina Mountain Naturalists\, an education service which presents a variety of wildlife and nature-related programs. MountainTrue’s Jordan McDaniel\, will take you behind the scenes of the ambitious cleanup and restoration efforts on the Green and Broad Rivers following Hurricane Helene. Expect an engaging\, interactive presentation filled with audience involvement\, lighthearted competition\, and exciting prizes! \nPrior to joining MountainTrue\, Jordan spent 3 years as the program director at H2O Dreams paddling school. By spending countless hours teaching on our local waterways\, Jordan has developed a deep reverence not only for those watersheds but the people of the Southern Appalachians who rely on them. Jordan is excited to take on the challenge to bring hope to this region through the clean up and restoration of private and public lands. \n\n5:30 p.m.: Grab and drink and network with like-minded locals.\n6:00 p.m.: Enjoy the presentation and learn something new!\n  \nHendersonville Green Drinks is presented by Conserving Carolina\, MountainTrue and The Local Table curated by Stump Farms. SUMMARY:Landrum Library Speaker Series: Fungal Foundations – How Mushrooms Build the Earth Beneath Our Feet
DESCRIPTION:Date: June 16\, 2026 \nTime: 6:00 p.m. \nLocation: Landrum Library \nSpeakers: Olga Katić \nJoin Olga\, of Mushroom Mountain\, for an engaging journey into the underground world of terrestrial fungi\, with a spotlight on Stropharia rugosoannulata—the mighty King Stropharia. Discover how mushrooms act as ecosystem engineers\, transforming woody debris and organic matter into rich\, fertile soil. This lecture explores the essential role of saprophytic fungi in building soil structure\, retaining moisture\, supporting plant life\, and even cleaning up toxins. You’ll also learn about practical applications in permaculture\, gardening\, and habitat restoration using mushrooms like King Stropharia. Whether you’re a mycophile\, a conservationist\, or just fungi-curious\, this talk will leave you seeing soil in a whole new light. \nOlga grew up mushroom hunting with her relatives in Bosnia and Hercegovina. When her parents were at work\, her grandma watched her and her sister\, and they had the freedom of being in the woods all day long. At one moment they would be digging up leeches out of the fresh water well and feeding them to chickens\, and the next moment\, they would get chased by grandma’s rooster. But they also spent a lot of time picking boletes\, milk mushrooms\, and other varieties of mushrooms. They’d bring them to their grandpa and he would get rid of the ones he thought were not edible\, the rest they would cook on the wood stove and eat! Moving to the present\, Olga is the proud owner of Mushroom Mountain and she has an amazing team working with her. They produce mushroom spawn for many different edible and medicinal varieties. They also make several different medicinal mushroom extracts and medicinal mushroom honeys under the name Mycomatrix. Mushroom Mountain also runs a Wild Mushroom Food Safety Certification Program. This program was accepted by Health Departments of 7 states\, and counting\, and also endorsed by the FDA. In her free time\, Olga loves to be in the woods\, picking mushrooms and wild plants\, and of course taking tons of pictures of anything she finds. They were also on the brink of extinction\, but now their population has bounced back. Come join a NC State Park Ranger to share storybooks about these fascinating animals and their unique adaptations. This will be a great program for the whole family\, so BRING THE KIDS! \nEric is a native of Rutherford County and has been with NC State Parks at Chimney Rock for 2½ years. Prior to his career as a Ranger\, he was a police officer at the Forest City Police Department\, and he was the Chief of Police for the Town of Spindale. Eric has a degree from Western Piedmont Community College and Lees McRae College in Criminal Justice\, and he’s completed his master’s degree in public administration through Appalachian State University. \nAlthough his background is mostly law enforcement related\, he has always enjoyed anything outdoors. Since working with Chimney Rock\, he has enjoyed being a part of interpretive education and programs. \nRSVP is requested below\, but not necessary to attend the event! SUMMARY:Green River Library Speaker Series: Southern Appalachians During the Ice Age
DESCRIPTION:Date: June 25\, 2026 \nTime: 2:00 p.m. \nLocation: Green River Library \nSpeaker: Dan Lazar\, naturalist and educator \nDuring the presentation\, Dan Lazar will discuss the animals and plants that were found in this region twenty thousand years ago.  He will also present evidence suggesting the former occurrence of now-extinct species such as Jefferson’s Ground Sloth and the American Mastodon.  The presentation will show images depicting ice age species still surviving in our Southern Mountains. \nDan Lazar served for many years as Director of Education at the Western North Carolina Nature Center\, followed by several years as Executive Director of the Colburn Earth Science Museum.  Mr. Lazar has a degree in Forest Biology from the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry at Syracuse.  He has been an instructor in the Blue Ridge Naturalist Certificate Program at the North Carolina Arboretum since 2005\, teaching a variety of classes including Ecology of the Blue Ridge Mountains\, Geology of the Blue Ridge Mountains\, Introduction to Insects\, Tree Identification\, and Meteorology.  Dan also has co-hosted “Nature News\,” a weekly radio program broadcast on WTZQ Hendersonville\, since 1993. \nThis program is part of the library’s summer reading program! \n*Space is limited and pre-registration is required by visiting the Green River Library’s calendar of events at this link.  \n \nThe Green River Library Speaker Series programs are made possible thanks to our partnership with the Henderson County Public Library. \nContact Pam Torlina\, pam@conservingcarolina.org\, with questions or for more information.
