Our plan is to utilize the gardens for community outreach programs\, workshops\, and guided tours to raise awareness about the importance of pollinators and native plant species. In one half of the large garden bed\, we plan to create an interactive garden for families with children. On future workdays we may work on the hardscape by installing paths\, borders\, and structures for climbing plants\, and other things for kids to enjoy.  We welcome your ideas and creativity! \nWhether you’re a seasoned gardener or just want to get your hands dirty for a good cause\, your help makes a difference. Join them for a fulfilling day of good work and companionship!  Wear long-sleeved shirts\, long pants\, and gloves\, and bring a pair of hand clippers if you have them. \nWorkdays are scheduled on the second Thursday of each month from 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. and will likely continue through the summer of 2026. \nVolunteers will meet at the FENCE parking lot on Hunting Country Road. For driving directions\, click here. After you turn onto the Fence property\, make a sharp right turn by the covered picnic area. Please note that while this endeavor is included on our calendar\, Conserving Carolina is not managing this activity. SUMMARY:Green Drinks: A Brief History of Air - air\, air pollution\, and solutions
DESCRIPTION:Asheville air\, clean and dirty \nThe history of air and the science of air pollution is part of the history of Western North Carolina. We will take a brief look into the past\, present\, and future through the lens of combustion and air pollution. We will discuss how science was used to help clean North Carolina’s air\, and to continue to study the air and keep it clean for both individual and environmental health. \nKeith Bamberger works for the Division of Air Quality out of the Asheville Regional Office of the Department of Environment Quality. His primary responsibility is coordinating the Western North Carolina Air Awareness Program. This program includes direct education and outreach to students and the general public\, supporting local governments\, non-governmental agencies\, and community resources groups in understanding air quality\, environmental health\, and the intersection between their programs and the health of the air. His responsibilities also include working on many statewide initiatives and committees\, and partnerships include NASA Earth to Sky Partnership\, the Land of Sky Clean Vehicles Coalition\, the Asheville Buncombe Air Quality Agency\, NC Soil and Water Conservation District\, the North Carolina Office of Environmental Education and Public Affairs\, the Environmental Educators of North Carolina and others. Past work includes nature centers\, museums\, the National Park Service\, and North Carolina 4-H. \n  \n5:30 p.m.: Grab and drink and network with like-minded locals.\n6:00 p.m.: Enjoy the presentation and learn something new!\n  \nHendersonville Green Drinks is presented by Conserving Carolina\, MountainTrue and Trailside Brewing Co. Come to Green Drinks to learn more about current environmental issues\, have relevant discussions\, and meet with like-minded people. This is a monthly event and everyone is welcome. SUMMARY:French Broad River Clean-Up with MountainTrue
DESCRIPTION:Volunteers are invited to help clean up trash with Conserving Carolina\, French Broad Paddle Trail Manager\, Jack Henderson\, and other members of MountainTrue’s French Broad Riverkeeper team. \nThe clean-up will be boat-based and focus on the French Broad River in Transylvania and Henderson counties between Penrose Boating Access Area and Blantyre Park. \nMountainTrue can provide canoes (with paddles and PFDs) to volunteers with previous paddling experience\, but attendees are otherwise requested to bring their own boats. MountainTrue will also provide gloves\, trash bags\, a dumpster for trash removal\, and a shuttle to the put-in. \nIf you need to borrow a boat from MountainTrue\, please use the boat request form. (We have a limited number of boats so you must complete this form to borrow a boat). \nALL participants\, regardless of whether you are borrowing a boat or bringing your own\, must sign-up through this “sign-up” link to ensure we can adhere to safety standards for the maximum number of participants. \nPlease bring: \n\nPFD if bringing your own boat.\nAppropriate clothing and footwear for paddling and cleaning up trash (closed-toed shoes recommended).\nDrinking water\, snacks\, lunch.\nChange of clothes for after the event.\n\nKids under the age of 18 are allowed as long as accompanied by a parent/guardian AND are experienced paddlers. \nTo thank you for your time\, volunteers are eligible to receive a complimentary annual membership to MountainTrue. Please email members@mountaintrue.org to request yours. \nREGISTER HERE. \nThis event has been generously-sponsored by Explore Brevard through the Transylvania County TDA’s Transylvania Always grant program. Our plan is to utilize the gardens for community outreach programs\, workshops\, and guided tours to raise awareness about the importance of pollinators and native plant species. In one half of the large garden bed\, we plan to create an interactive garden for families with children. On future workdays we may work on the hardscape by installing paths\, borders\, and structures for climbing plants\, and other things for kids to enjoy.  We welcome your ideas and creativity! \nWhether you’re a seasoned gardener or just want to get your hands dirty for a good cause\, your help makes a difference. This program aims to introduce participants to the native mammals\, reptiles and amphibians\, fish\, insects\, and birds of South Carolina\, while emphasizing the importance of preservation and conservation and fostering a deeper appreciation for the natural world and inspire active involvement in conservation efforts. \nMelissa Fuentes was raised in Eagle Pass\, TX\, a small border town nestled against the rugged beauty of the Texas hill country. Her childhood was filled with adventure—hunting\, catching armadillos and snakes\, and immersing herself in the wild landscapes that shaped her love for the natural world. That passion soon extended beyond exploration and into academia\, where she developed a deep curiosity for science\, literature\, and the arts. \nAfter high school\, Melissa pursued her education at two universities\, earning degrees in Biology\, English\, and the arts—all centered on her lifelong commitment to teaching others about nature. Her academic journey led her to further studies\, but fate intervened when she was offered a position at Clemson University. As the curator of the Bob and Betsy Museum of Natural History\, she found the perfect space to merge scholarship with storytelling. SUMMARY:Green River Library Speaker Series: An Introduction To Western Carolina Butterflies
DESCRIPTION:Date: August 28\, 2025 \nTime: 2:00 p.m. \nLocation: Green River Library \nSpeaker: David Ahrenholz \nButterfly populations across the United States have declined at least 22% since 2000. This presentation is an introduction to the butterflies occurring in the fields\, forests and lawns of Western North Carolina and it includes ways to us backyard plants to attract and support them. \nDr. Ahrenholz began his interest in butterflies as a child in Iowa. He taught himself photography because family and friends were not interested in dead insect specimens. After medical school he continued his passion for nature photography\, photographing butterflies across the US and tropical South America. His photographs captured new species and led to an appointment as a Research Associate in the Entomology Department at the Smithsonian. He has pursued a 25-year project with the museum to document the butterflies of Ecuador in photographs and by collecting specimens. SUMMARY:Guided Mushroom/Ecology Walk at Swiftwater Farm
DESCRIPTION:Join Conserving Carolina for an interpretive nature walk to look for mushrooms with Olga Katić\, owner of Mushroom Mountain!\n  \nThe event will take place along the Green River in Mills Spring\, NC\, below the Lake Adger dam on Saturday\, August 30th from 9:00-11:00 a.m. In order to make this an enjoyable and educational experience for participants\, space is limited to 20 and pre-registration is required. \nOlga grew up mushroom hunting with her relatives in Bosnia and Hercegovina. When her parents were at work\, her grandma watched her and her sister\, and they had the freedom of being in the woods all day long. At one moment they would be digging up leeches out of the fresh water well and feeding them to chickens\, and the next moment\, they would get chased by grandma’s rooster. But they also spent a lot of time picking boletes\, milk mushrooms\, and other varieties of mushrooms. They’d bring them to their grandpa and he would get rid of the ones he thought were not edible\, the rest they would cook on the wood stove and eat! Moving to the present\, Olga is the proud owner of Mushroom Mountain and she has an amazing team working with her. They produce mushroom spawn for many different edible and medicinal varieties. They also make several different medicinal mushroom extracts and medicinal mushroom honeys under the name Mycomatrix. Mushroom Mountain also runs a Wild Mushroom Food Safety Certification Program. This program was accepted by Health Departments of 7 states\, and counting\, and also endorsed by the FDA. In her free time\, Olga loves to be in the woods\, picking mushrooms and wild plants\, and of course taking tons of pictures of anything she finds. She is fascinated by nature in every possible aspect. \n  \nFor your safety\, do not attempt this activity if it is beyond your ability and experience. Participants should wear appropriate clothing and footwear and bring a snack\, water\, and any personal medication that may be required.
