SUMMARY:A Soulful Journey Workshop/Healing with Flute
DESCRIPTION:Join us for “A Soulful Journey\,” a workshop creating ceremony and finding your voice with a Native flute and ritual.\n\nHave you been drawn to the calming sounds of the Native American Flute?\nHave you dreamed of playing an instrument but felt you had no musical ability?\nWould you like to be more expressive of your feelings and emotions?\nWould you be interested in finding more presence in each moment?\nWould a journey of empowerment and claiming your voice interest you?\n\nIf you answered yes to any of these questions\, then this may be calling you! \nCONSTRUCTED TO BE EXPERIENTIAL – We will take a deep dive into ceremony\, intention\, poetry and ritual that will honor your introduction to the Native American Style Flute to make it uniquely yours! Discover the power of this ancient instrument to call upon healing within others as well as yourself. You will discover the experience of personal expression through breath…. unlocking new channels for Your Voice\, to be Heard. \nAimed Towards Beginners – Ideal for those who do not already play Native Flute or those with very little experience. It is designed to illustrate your own ability to improvise and express yourself…calling on feelings and emotions you may not otherwise have been able to communicate verbally. We will learn how to adjust your Flute so you can play your best\, proper care and fingering for the pentatonic scale as well as basic methods of improvision. \nWhat you will need – Comfortable clothing for the weather of the day\, journal\, water bottle\, blanket\, or yoga mat to sit on. \n*Cost to participate in this workshop is $65 – cost includes a Native American Style Flute (please bring check or cash). \nFrederick Conrad\, who goes by “Conrad\,” was born and raised in Baltimore Maryland. He enjoyed a full career in the electrical industry followed by a second career managing a hospitality venue. Working in a highly stressful environment\, he found calm and peacefulness through breathwork\, meditation\, and Spirit based modalities. There will be some moderate walking. \nIn 2020\, he retired and was drawn to the Asheville area. Shortly after arrival\, he met an array of teachers and communities that mentored him in various programs surrounding Rites of Passage\, Grief Rituals\, Sound Healings and Trauma work. \nWhile attending a Four Day Retreat in 2020\, he was gifted a Native American Flute that was used by a man in South America…he called it his “Medicine”. He remembers attempting to blow into the flute for the first time at the ceremony…he got nothing!  He took the flute home and began to work with it. Slowly but surely the flute began to come alive and is now a part of my medicine and healing. Three and a half years later he has collected many flutes and loves teaching others how to play this beautiful instrument. He currently offers Native Flute to support local yoga practices\, grief workshops\, forest bathing\, community churches as well as other callings that support healing environments and ceremony. The Native flute holds many teachings that parallel with our own life cycle. Sharing these healing qualities with others has become his passion. He is very excited to share how his journey has prepared him to present this offering to those who hear the calling\, and he looks forward to meeting you in the circle. \nSpace is limited to 8 participants and pre-registration is required by RSVP below. RSVP will close at 12:00 pm on November 8th. \nLEARN MORE ABOUT FOREST BATHING \nRSVP below\nRSVP will close at 12:00 p.m. 11/8/23

SUMMARY:Sacred Saunter
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special session of forest bathing at Transfiguration Preserve. Sunday “sacred saunters” provide space for contemplation and reflection in nature\, opening and closing with a sharing circle. This event will be led by Dr. Mattie Decker and will allow plenty of space for individual exploration in ways that respect each person’s unique needs. \n“People ought to saunter – not hike! Do you know the origin of that word ‘saunter?’ It’s a beautiful word. Back in the Middle Ages people used to go on pilgrimages to the Holy Land\, and when people in the villages through which they passed asked where they were going\, they would reply\, “A la sainte terre\,’ ‘To the Holy Land.’ And so they became known as sainte-terre-ers or saunterers. Now these [trees] are our Holy Land\, and we ought to saunter through them reverently\, not ‘hike’ through them.”- John Muir \nMattie is a certified Nature and Forest Therapy Guide. She is also a Zen practitioner\, an Episcopal oblate\, and a retired education professor\, and she is certified in wilderness first aid. This event is one of our monthly forest bathing walks. Forest bathing is a practice from Japan that has been gaining attention in the West. Forest bathing is not about getting exercise. It’s not about hiking to get somewhere. It’s about being present in the forest\, taking it in. It’s about creating relationships between humans and the more-than-human world. \nSpace is limited and registration is required by RSVP below. RSVP will close at 12:00 p.m. on November 9th. \nDonations are not required and the amount of your gift is entirely up to you. A donation of $30 is suggested for forest bathing walks\, for those who are able. Donations of $35 or more will include Conserving Carolina membership benefits. \nDONATE HERE \nLEARN MORE ABOUT FOREST BATHING \nRSVP will close at 12:00 p.m. 11/9/23

SUMMARY:Landrum Library Speaker Series: Loons of Lake Jocassee
DESCRIPTION:Date: November 14\, 2023 \nTime: 6:00 p.m. \nLocation: Landrum Library \nSpeakers: Brooks Wade\, of Jocassee Lake Tours and Dr. Jay Mager\, Professor of Biological & Allied Health Sciences at Ohio Northern University \n  \nThe Common Loon is one of the most studied birds on the planet\, but most of the research has been on their summer breeding behavior while they raise their young\, but who knows what they do in winter? We do! For six years\, we have watched and recorded the behavior of these enigmatic birds on Lake Jocassee. It is the first ever study of loons in winter in a freshwater environment. Loons have spent most of their natural history wintering in marine environments and only within the last 100 years or so have they begun to winter on lakes such as Jocassee. This year\, the study has been expanded to include loon migration in spring\, when loons use Lake Jocassee as a significant stop-over lake. Both research projects will be the topic of discussion. \nBrooks Wade is the co-founder\, along with his wife Kay\, of Jocassee Lake Tours and Jocassee Wild Outdoor Education. Brooks is the host\, guide and co-investigator for the Jocassee research. It is Brooks’ passion for loons and his awareness of the unique opportunity for research on Lake Jocassee that brought the attention of the scientific community to Lake Jocassee. \nDr. Jay Mager is a professor at Ohio Northern University where he teaches courses in ecology\, ornithology\, and animal behavior. He is also a book review editor for the American Ornithological Society. Jay’s life of loonacy began as a young boy spending his summers in northern Ontario\, and he is fortunate to have worked with many individuals and mentors who share his interests in loon biology and conservation. Jay has studied loon communication and breeding behavior on breeding lakes in the United States and Canada\, and has participated in this study of wintering loons on Lake Jocassee for the past three years. He has always been fascinated by these charismatic birds\, and has spent most of his life learning more about the ecological and behavioral requirements necessary for loon survival and reproductive success. \n \nThe Landrum Library Speaker Series programs are made possible thanks to our partnership with the Spartanburg County Public Libraries. \nContact Pam Torlina\, pam@conservingcarolina.org\, with questions or for more information.
