SUMMARY:Fall Hiking Series: Lookout Rock\, Montreat
DESCRIPTION:Where: Montreat Wilderness Area \nMeet: Ironwood Square\, Conserving Carolina’s office\, 847 Case Street\, Hendersonville\, NC\, at 8:30 a.m. \nDistance and difficulty: 3.5 miles\, moderate; trail type – loop \nElevation gain: 890′ \nApproximately 1 hour drive \nThe trailhead is accessed from the historic Montreat Conference Center.  The highlight of this hike is Lookout Rock\, a stone outcrop which offers views of the Montreat and Swannanoa valleys and the Seven Sisters range (or Middle Mountain). \nNestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains\, Montreat Conference Center has been “a place set apart” for spiritual rest\, renewal\, and recreation for over 100 years.  In 1897\, the Mountain Retreat Association purchased 4\,500 acres with the intention of building a Christian settlement.  In October of 1916\, Montreat Normal School opened as a four-year preparatory and two-year college geared at preparing young Christian women to become teachers; the first session had eight students in attendance.  In 1934\, Montreat Normal School was renamed Montreat College.  In 1945\, the college began a four-year degree program\, and in 1959 the college became a coeducational junior college and was re-named Montreat-Anderson College.   In 1974\, the Mountain Retreat Association and Montreat-Anderson College became two separate organizations.  In 1986\, the college again became a baccalaureate institution and in 1995\, returned to the original name of Montreat College.  In 2004\, the 2\,460-acre Montreat Wilderness Area was placed under a conservation easement that would permanently protect the mountain cove property from development.  To this day\, Montreat College has a four-year program on several campuses\, as well as a graduate program\, and the Montreat Conference Center offers a wide variety of meeting\, housing\, dining\, and recreational facilities for large conferences to private retreats and reunions. \n*Space is limited and pre-registration is required\, and space is limited to 20 participants. The hikes will meet at Ironwood Plaza (Conserving Carolina’s office) and will leave promptly at 8:45 a.m. Hikers should plan to return to the area in the late afternoon\, time varying with group size\, distance of hike\, and drive time. Car-pooling will be organized at the meeting location. If you’re coming from an area closer to the trailhead\, please contact Pam Torlina (email above) to make other meeting arrangements. \nBe sure to wear appropriate clothing and sturdy footwear. Bring a bag lunch and/or snack and plenty of water for yourself. \nIn case of inclement weather\, please contact Pam Torlina by email at: pam@conservingcarolina.org by 8:00 a.m. on the day of the hike and/or check the Conserving Carolina website ‘calendar’ and/or Facebook page to see if the hike will take place. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a session of forest bathing with opportunities for reflections and expressions in art. This event will offer avenues for creative expression which participants in past Forest Bathing walks have requested. We will close with the traditional tea ceremony and\, depending on weather\, may return to the house or porch for closing sharing together. \nWe will open all of our senses as we take in the fall forest.  This event includes creative activities led by artist Jim Stilwell and forest bathing guided by Dr. Mattie Decker. \nArtist\, Jim Stilwell\nJim is a well-known artist in Asheville\, NC and has worked over many years guiding individuals to come to know their own inner artist. He recently taught a large class outdoors at Flying Cloud Farm and many were beginners who delighted in his intuitive ease of instruction (with gentle modeling and suggestions). \nMattie is a certified Nature and Forest Therapy Guide. She is also a Zen practitioner\, an Episcopal oblate\, and a retired education professor\, and she is certified in wilderness first aid. This event is one of our monthly forest bathing walks. Forest bathing is a practice from Japan that has been gaining attention in the West. Forest bathing is not about getting exercise. It’s not about hiking to get somewhere. It’s about being present in the forest\, taking it in. It’s about creating relationships between humans and the more-than-human world. \nSpace is limited to 12 participants. Often it is not for a fish.” Fennel Hudson\, Fly Fishing – Fennel’s Journal – No. 5 \nJoin us as we approach fly fishing as a contemplative practice and a way to experience renewal beyond just “getting on the water.” Western North Carolina has some of the best fly fishing on the east coast. Participants will have opportunities to fish on a private section of the Broad River. All levels of skill are welcome\, but gear\, and instruction is not provided. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special session of forest bathing and yoga at Transfiguration Preserve with Kiersten Angelos\, Certified Yoga instructor and Ayurvedic medicine practitioner. Participants will enjoy gentle yoga along the Rocky Broad River. \nBring your own yoga mat and props\, and a water bottle. \nDr. Mattie Decker’s friend Kiersten Angelos will begin a monthly offering here of Nature and Yoga! Kiersten is an ANFT-Certified Forest Therapy Guide and a Yoga Teacher certified in both Vinyasa yoga (200RYT) and Ayuryoga (500RYT).  She moved here from Albuquerque\, New Mexico where she was certified as an Ayurvedic Practitioner with The Ayurvedic Institute. With all of her training\, she helps guide others to live life harmoniously by incorporating wellness and holistic teachings. Kiersten has been on all of Dr. Mattie Decker’s walks since moving to Asheville\, and is delighted to bring this practice to the community. \nSpace is limited to 12 participants. SUMMARY:Pleasant Grove Workday
DESCRIPTION:Background Info:\nPleasant Grove is a property owned by Conserving Carolina as of August 2017. It consists of around 110 acres of floodplain and was a dairy farm in its former life\, beginning in the early 1920s. In the mid-2000s\, the property was graded and slated to become a residential development known as Seven Falls. That development fell through. Now that Conserving Carolina owns the property\, removing non-native invasive species is a priority for increasing the conservation values of the property. Some of the non-native invasive species noted on the property are Japanese honeysuckle\, multiflora rose\, Japanese knotweed\, Chinese silvergrass\, autumn olive\, and privet. \nWorkday Description:\nVolunteers will be removing various non-native invasive species\, such as Chinese privet\, Japanese honeysuckle\, and multiflora rose from the property. Using only mechanical techniques\, volunteers will be using pruners\, handsaws\, and pulling to remove invasive plant species. \nVolunteers must be able to walk moderate distances across rough terrain. Tools and gloves will be provided; all materials are sanitized before and after each workday. Plant ID and removal techniques will be taught on-site. Department of Natural Resources \nLandscape level changes are needed to create the required habitat for many small game species in South Carolina. Bobwhite Quail\, Ruffed Grouse\, Appalachian Cottontail\, Swamp Rabbits and a whole host of non-game birds use very specific early successional habitats and these areas are quickly disappearing across the state. This presentation will discuss what once was\, what needs to happen\, and some success stories. \nMichael grew up in Lexington\, SC on a family farm and attended Clemson University for my undergrad degree. I then went to work for the SCDNR in 2000 in New Ellenton SC helping to manage the Crackerneck WMA. Shortly I completed my graduate degree in Earth and Environmental and Resource Management at the University of SC. Participants will enjoy a hike to grassy knolls that offer beautiful views of the surrounding mountains\, through the maturing forest\, and along Walnut Creek to Walnut Creek Falls. *The Preserve is private land\, and the public is only allowed on the property by invitation\, so take advantage of this unique opportunity to enjoy the serenity of this beautiful property in the glory of autumn. \n*Space is limited and pre-registration is required\, and space is limited to 20 participants. (USDA Forest Service photo by John Schelhas) \n  \nDate: October 21\, 2023 \nTime: 10:30 a.m. \nLocation: Anne Elizabeth Suratt Nature Center at Walnut Creek Preserve \nSpeaker: Watson Harlan\, historian and citizen of the Cherokee Nation \n  \nNative Agricultural History is a lecture and forum discussion regarding the practices of Cherokee Nation agriculture from pre-contact to Removal and a discussion on the relationship between history\, ecology and contemporary issues\, drawing a throughline from the agricultural history of the past to our issues of today. The lecture will be approximately one half hour (30 minutes)\, followed by an open discussion with guests about the issues and effect of invasives and climate change on local ecology and ways that traditional knowledge can be transmitted to improve the ecological health of farms and gardens throughout contemporary life. \nWatson B. Harlan is a citizen of the Cherokee Nation and a resident of the Eastern Band of Cherokee. He has a bachelors in History with a minor in Native American and Indigenous Studies from the University of North Carolina at Asheville. He has worked as a cultural consultant for the EBCI (Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians) in multiple departments including The Tribal Food Distribution Program and the Office of the Attorney General. He also specializes in reconstructive historical fencing techniques and economic developmental history. DESCRIPTION:Background Info:\nPreviously used as an agricultural site\, the Mouth of Mud Creek is a 100+ acre habitat restoration project taken on by Conserving Carolina in 2015. Through several years of restoration work\, Conserving Carolina and several partnering organizations have restored this property back to its original ecological function\, a natural plain along the French Broad River. This remediation has provided significant ecological benefits\, such as creating important habitat for wildlife\, a forest buffer along the river\, and breeding sites for fish\, such as the elusive Muskellunge. Although major construction has been completed\, there is still a lot of on-going work to do! \nTo learn more about this site\, the Asheville Citizen Times recently put out a story about the Mouth of Mud Creek: HERE. \nWorkday Description:\nWe will be promoting the growth of native species by removing non-native invasive plant species\, such as Chinese privet and Japanese honeysuckle\, along Mud Creek and the French Broad River. We will remove these plants through hand pulling or cutting them at their base and applying a small amount of herbicide to the cut surface.\nVolunteers must be able to walk moderate distances across rough terrain. All tools and gloves will be provided. Plant ID and removal techniques will be taught on-site. Trees are Steve’s favorite subject\, and he’ll be speaking to us about “The Secret Life of Trees. \nSteve Pettis has spent his life studying plants and gardening.  As a child\, he gardened with his grandmother dividing daylilies\, irises and daffodils and collecting native plants in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains in Georgia.  Steve has been a tree farm and nursery manager\, a research greenhouse manager\, a consulting arborist\, UGA Extension Agent in Rockdale and Gwinnett Counties\, and is now a North Carolina Horticulture Agent in Henderson County. \n*Space is limited and pre-registration is required by visiting the Etowah Library’s calendar of events at this link. SUMMARY:Fall Colors Day Hike to John Rock!
DESCRIPTION:Where: John Rock\, Pisgah Ranger District of Pisgah National Forest \nMeet: Pisgah Center for Wildlife Education parking lot \nDistance and difficulty: 4.6 miles\, moderate; trail type – loop \nElevation gain: 1\,066′ \nJoin us for a hike to the summit of John Rock! The highlight of this hike is John Rock\, a large granite dome which offers views of the fish hatchery\, Looking Glass Rock\, and Pilot Mountain; it is a perfect vista for taking in the colors of autumn! \nThe Pisgah Center for Wildlife Education and Fish Hatchery in Pisgah National Forest\, now closed\, was originally the site of a logging community and then a Civilian Conservation Corps camp during the Great Depression. It served as a long time wildlife education facility and an important fish hatchery for the area. However\, in 2021\, the Center suffered extensive damaged from flooding by Tropical Depression Fred\, and the Center will not reopen. \n*Space is limited and pre-registration is required\, and space is limited to 20 participants. RSVP in the block/link below and for more information\, contact hannah@conservingcarolina.org. \nRSVP \nThis hike sponsored by Conserving Carolina and the NC Cooperative Extension of Transylvania County and is free\, guided\, and open to the public. The hike will meet at Pisgah Center for Wildlife Education parking lot at 12:00 p.m. and will leave promptly at 12:15 p.m. Hikers should plan to return to the area in the late afternoon\, time varying with group size and pace of hikers. \n \nBe sure to wear appropriate clothing and sturdy footwear. We are breaking ground on this long-awaited 19-mile rail trail. \nFrom 10-11\, there is a social hour\, vendor visits\, and walks on the trail. \nThen from 11-12 is the groundbreaking ceremony. \nThis event is open to the public\, and all members of the community are encouraged to attend. We are so grateful to all of you who donated to support the trail and we especially want to recognize our major donors. Participants are advised to wear weather-appropriate clothing and footwear suited for uneven terrain. Feel free to bring a lawn chair so you can have a seat as you enjoy this very exciting day in Henderson County!

DESCRIPTION:Join the Conserving Carolina “Kudzu Warriors” as they continue the fight against Kudzu\, a non-native and invasive vine\, at the Conserving Carolina owned Norman Wilder Forest off of Hwy 176. \nThe Kudzu Warriors\, named for their hard work eradicating Kudzu on Little Warrior Mountain\, have been defending the Conserving Carolina nature preserve from Kudzu (and other exotic species) since 2011 and have made a tremendous impact on the property. Areas that were once a mat of Kudzu vines are now lush with native vegetation! But the fight is not over\, and we need your help! \nJoin us Monday from 9:00-11:00 a.m. at the Norman Wilder Forest parking area/trailhead off of Hwy 176\, between Tryon and Saluda. Tools\, safety vests\, and gloves will be provided. We will meet at the Fruitland Baptist Bible College.\n\nAfterwards\, please join us for a hike up Bearwallow Mountain (optional; 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM).
