SUMMARY:Guided Nature Walk - Looking for Mushrooms!
DESCRIPTION:Join Conserving Carolina for an interpretive nature walk to look for mushrooms with Charlotte Caplan!\n  \nThe event will take place along the Green River in Mills Spring\, NC\, below the Lake Adger dam on Saturday\, August 12th from 10:00-11:30 a.m. In order to make this an enjoyable and educational experience for participants\, space is limited to 20 and pre-registration is required. \nCharlotte Caplan has been collecting\, studying\, identifying\, and eating fungi for over 40 years\, in both Europe and North America.  She started learning about mushrooms in Britain in 1975\, and she was mainly self-taught because the British have no tradition of collecting wild mushrooms and there are very few clubs available.  Upon moving to the USA\, to Savannah\, GA\, in 1986 there still seemed to be no one else interested in fungi.  But then\, after moving to Asheville in 1998\, it was like moving to the mushroom capital of the world!  There were not only huge varieties of fungi to be found\, but also an active mushroom club! \nMs. Caplan is the past president of the Asheville Mushroom Club and she has presented to many mushroom clubs\, led numerous field trips\, and has been an instructor for the NC Arboretum’s Blue Ridge Naturalist certification program. \nFor your safety\, do not attempt this activity if it is beyond your ability and experience. Participants should wear appropriate clothing and footwear and bring a snack\, water\, and any personal medication that may be required. A loop/hand lens may be helpful\, if you have one to bring! \nIn case of inclement weather\, please contact Pam Torlina by e-mail\, pam@conservingcarolina.org\, by 8 a.m. on the day of the walk and/or check the Conserving Carolina website or Facebook page to see if the walk will take place. \nSpace is limited. She is also a Zen practitioner\, an Episcopal oblate\, and a retired education professor\, and she is certified in wilderness first aid. This event is one of our monthly forest bathing walks. Forest bathing is a practice from Japan that has been gaining attention in the West. Forest bathing is not about getting exercise. It’s not about hiking to get somewhere. It’s about being present in the forest\, taking it in. It’s about creating relationships between humans and the more-than-human world. \nTo keep everyone safe\, these walks are limited to 12 participants. Registration is required. Sunday “sacred saunters” provide space for contemplation and reflection in nature\, opening and closing with a sharing circle. Do you know the origin of that word ‘saunter?’ It’s a beautiful word. Back in the Middle Ages people used to go on pilgrimages to the Holy Land\, and when people in the villages through which they passed asked where they were going\, they would reply\, “A la sainte terre\,’ ‘To the Holy Land.’ And so they became known as sainte-terre-ers or saunterers. Participants will enjoy gentle yoga along the Rocky Broad River; \nBring your own yoga mat and props\, and a water bottle. \nDr. Mattie Decker’s friend Kiersten Angelos will begin a monthly offering here of Nature and Yoga! Kiersten is an ANFT-Certified Forest Therapy Guide and a Yoga Teacher certified in both Vinyasa yoga (200RYT) and Ayuryoga (500RYT).  She moved here from Albuquerque\, New Mexico where she was certified as an Ayurvedic Practitioner with The Ayurvedic Institute. With all of her training\, she helps guide others to live life harmoniously by incorporating wellness and holistic teachings. DESCRIPTION:Come join us for a volunteer workday removing non-native invasive species at Carolina Memorial Sanctuary\nin partnership with the Barkwells Easement!\n\n\n\n\nBackground Info:\nPut under a conservation easement with Conserving Carolina in 2018\, Carolina Memorial Sanctuary is an 11-acre conservation & green cemetery passionate about protecting the land and conserving the environment. In addition to eco-burials\, CMS is a public park that strives to improve the land. The neighboring property\, under a conservation easement and owned by the Barkwells\, is partnering with Conserving Carolina and CMS to work on various conservation projects\, including: stream restoration\, storm water retention\, a pollinator meadow\, bluebird boxes\, invasive species removal\, native plantings\, and stream restoration \nWorkday Description:\nVolunteers will be removing various non-native invasive species\, such as Kudzu\, bamboo\, Chinese Privet\, Japanese Honeysuckle\, and Multiflora Rose from the sanctuary. Using only mechanical techniques\, volunteers will be using pruners\, handsaws\, and pulling to remove invasive plant species. \nVolunteers must be able to walk moderate distances across rough terrain. Tools and gloves will be provided; all materials are sanitized before and after each workday. Plant ID and removal techniques will be taught on-site. The eerie glow of jack-o-lantern mushrooms in the forest on a moonless night. These lights bring mystery and magic to the dark night. Join us as we discover how light is produced and emitted from living organisms and how it is used to lure prey\, deter predators and entice insects. \nTim is native South Carolinian and he has studied and taught as a naturalist and biologist throughout the southeast for more than 30 years. For the past 21 years he has been the Interpretive Ranger and Naturalist for South Carolina State Park Service’s Mountain Bridge Wilderness Area (Jones Gap and Caesar’s Head SPs) where he conducts research and provides educational programs for children and adults. He is a coordinator and instructor for the South Carolina Master Naturalist Program and is an Educational Leadership Partner for the South Carolina Aquarium. DESCRIPTION:Background Info:\nPreviously used as an agricultural site\, the Mouth of Mud Creek is a 100+ acre habitat restoration project taken on by Conserving Carolina in 2015. Through several years of restoration work\, Conserving Carolina and several partnering organizations have restored this property back to its original ecological function\, a natural plain along the French Broad River. This remediation has provided significant ecological benefits\, such as creating important habitat for wildlife\, a forest buffer along the river\, and breeding sites for fish\, such as the elusive Muskellunge. Although major construction has been completed\, there is still a lot of on-going work to do! \nTo learn more about this site\, the Asheville Citizen Times recently put out a story about the Mouth of Mud Creek: HERE. \nWorkday Description:\nWe will be promoting the growth of native species by removing non-native invasive plant species\, such as Chinese privet and Japanese honeysuckle\, along Mud Creek and the French Broad River. We will remove these plants through hand pulling or cutting them at their base and applying a small amount of herbicide to the cut surface.\nVolunteers must be able to walk moderate distances across rough terrain. All tools and gloves will be provided. Plant ID and removal techniques will be taught on-site. You will get dirty\, so make sure to wear appropriate clothing. \nWhat to Bring:\nWater\nSnacks/Lunch\nLeather Work Gloves (if you have a personal pair)\nSmall Backpack\nChange of Clothes for drive home (recommended) \nWhat to Wear:\nClosed toed shoes that can navigate off-trail terrain and that can get dirty\nWork pants\, long sleeves; dress for the weather \nRSVP below.\nTo RSVP please email Patrick@conservingcarolina.org\nQuestions?
