DESCRIPTION:Date: December 14\, 2023 \nTime: 6:00 p.m. \nLocation: Trailside Brewing Co. \nSpeakers: Matthew Manley\, project manager for the City of Hendersonville GEN H Comprehensive Plan \nCity Planning Staff will lead participants through a mapping exercise where you will be tasked to balance housing growth and economic development with choices related to transportation\, quality of life and conservation. You will have to earn points to unlock game pieces and strive to avoid “raising taxes” in order to “win” the game. \nMatthew Manley is an accredited City Planner through the American Planning Association’s American Institute of Certified Planners. He is the project manager for the City of Hendersonville GEN H Comprehensive Plan. Matthew has been with the City of Hendersonville since December of 2020 and helped to shepherd the city through a time of unprecedented growth. He is originally from Greenville\, SC and attended Presbyterian College (B.S.) and Clemson University (MCRP). He came to Hendersonville after working in Johnson City\, Tennessee and Lyons\, Colorado. He lives in town with his wife\, Molly\, and two toddlers\, Quinn and Townes\, and the family’s two dogs\, Reed and Dega. They are all avid hikers and lovers of nature.  Outside of work\, if he is not on the trail or working in the yard\, you will find him rooting for his Gamecocks and Atlanta Braves! \n  \n5:30 p.m.: Grab and drink and network with like-minded locals.\n6:00 p.m.: Enjoy the presentation and learn something new!\n  \nHendersonville Green Drinks is presented by Conserving Carolina\, MountainTrue and Trailside Brewing Co. Come to Green Drinks to learn more about current environmental issues\, have relevant discussions\, and meet with like-minded people. This is a monthly event and everyone is welcome. You don’t have to drink at Green Drinks\, just come and listen. Trailside Brewing Co. offers beer\, wine\, cider\, prosecco and non-alcoholic beverages. DESCRIPTION:Do you have an interest in native plants\, creating native habitat\, and educating others about the benefits of going native?  Join us from 9:30 AM – 2 PM (or as long as you’re able during that timeframe) at the Anne Elizabeth Suratt Nature Center at Walnut Creek Preserve\, 179 Wood Thrush Lane\, Mill Spring. \nWalnut Creek Preserve is a 2\,100 acre equestrian conservation community\, with over 1\,500 acres of permanently protected land around 2-miles of Walnut Creek and over 25 of its tributaries. While a private preserve\, by invitation and appointment\, the preserve offers a monthly educational speaker series with Conserving Carolina at the Anne Elizabeth Suratt Nature Center and it hosts many other organizations and groups of all ages\, like Muddy Sneakers\, inspiring appreciation for the natural world. \nThe next phase of the nature center is to expand the native pollinator gardens\, creating more habitat and offering an immersive educational experience. \nYou can help make this concept come to fruition. The goal is to provide native plant education by the grouping of zones according to wildlife supporting attributes and other interests\, such as: Mast Producers\, Shade Producers\, Berry Producers\, Seed and Nectar Producers\, Butterfly and Moth Larval Hosts\, Native Grasses\, Heath Family Species\, and Regional\, Unique\, and Ornamentally Improved Natives. \nNo experience needed and tools will be provided\, but please bring gloves and gardening tools\, if you have them (hoes\, McLeods\, rogue hoes\, shovels\, etc.). \nFor this workday\, we’ll be clearing brush from the butterfly garden area\, planting trees\, and spreading mulch. \nBe sure to wear appropriate clothing and sturdy footwear. SUMMARY:Hike with Foothills Humane Society!
DESCRIPTION:When: December 16th \nWhere: Green River Game Lands\, Green River Cove trail \nTime: 10:00 a.m. \n6.5-miles\, moderate; trail type-out and back; elevation change\, just over 1000′ \nHikers\, and their dogs\, are invited to join Conserving Carolina and the Foothills Humane Society (FHS) on Saturday\, December 16th for a 6.5-mile hike along the Green River Cove trail in the Green River Game Lands. Conserving Carolina’s Community Engagement Director\, Pam Torlina\, will lead the hike from the trail head off of Green River Cove Road. \nThis is a great opportunity to give a shelter dog a break from the shelter and allow them to enjoy a nice\, socializing walk in the woods. There is a limit to the number of dogs that can come from the shelter\, so if you’re interested in walking a dog\, please contact Dee Anderson\, Volunteer Coordinator for FHS by Wednesday\, November 22nd to arrange a time for training orientation\, pairing with the appropriate dog\, and to sign a volunteer waiver. Dee can be reached at\, volunteer@foothillshumanesociety.org. Participants may also bring their own dog on the hike so long as they are kept on leash and do not have any nose-to-nose meetings with the shelter dogs. \nThe 6.5-mile moderate hike is 3.25-miles out and 3.25-miles back and begins with a gradual incline along a steep bank\, but then levels out as the trail parallels the Green River.  There are a few ups and downs along the trail and\, moving away from the river\, there will be an approximately 250′ elevation gain over one mile before descending back to the river for great views and the perfect lunch spot. There are several stream crossings along the trail and the trail terminates just below the Narrows…with no view of the Narrows\, but beautiful views of the river. \nPre-registration is mandatory\, and space is limited to 20 participants. Please email pam@conservingcarolina.org\, if you’d like to attend. \n  \nHikers will meet at the trailhead by 10:00 a.m. to sign in\, get paired with their dog\, and begin the walk. There is parking across the street from the trailhead\, south of Green River Cove Rd. and east of the Green River\, and there is parking on the north side of Green River Cove Road\, west of the Green River. We would like FHS to have a parking spot across from the trailhead\, if possible\, for ease and safety getting the dogs out and to their walkers.  Hikers should be prepared to return to the area in the late afternoon. \nBe sure to wear appropriate clothing and sturdy footwear. Bring a bag lunch and/or snack and plenty of water (don’t forget snacks for your pooch!). \nIn case of inclement weather\, please contact Pam Torlina by email at: pam@conservingcarolina.org by 8:00 a.m. on the day of the hike and/or check the Conserving Carolina website ‘calendar’ and/or Facebook page to see if the hike will take place. Please also remember to bring any medication that you may need in the event of an emergency (ie: epinephrine\, nitroglycerine\, insulin\, etc.). Hike leader will carry a first aid kit; however\, it may not contain specific medication for your individual needs. \nBefore each hike\, you will be asked to sign a waiver form. SUMMARY:A Nighttime Walk to Celebrate the Winter Solstice
DESCRIPTION:Date: December 21\, 2023 \nTime: 7:00 p.m. \nLocation: DuPont State Recreational Forest\, Hooker Falls Access Area\, first/lower parking lot \nJoin us to celebrate the winter solstice – the longest night of the year – with a nighttime walk to Hooker Falls\, in DuPont State Recreational Forest. \nStarting from the lower/first parking lot\, the stroll will be along a one-fourth mile trail to the base of Hooker Falls. In the dark of night we’ll create soft moonlight by shining flashlights upon the falls…creating a quiet moment to celebrate the return of the sun to the northern hemisphere. \nParticipants are invited to bring a thermos with a warm (non-alcoholic) drink to toast the sun’s return when we arrive back at the lower/first parking lot. Bring a flashlight for use when necessary. The event will be cancelled in case of heavy rain\, snow\, or ice. \nPre-registration is required\, please RSVP below.  There is no charge for this event. \nIn case of inclement weather\, the website event will be updated by 12 p.m. the day of the walk if cancellation is necessary. \nFor your safety\, do not attempt any hike beyond your ability and experience. DESCRIPTION:Join the Conserving Carolina “Kudzu Warriors” as they continue the fight against Kudzu\, a non-native and invasive vine\, at the Conserving Carolina owned Norman Wilder Forest off of Hwy 176. \nThe Kudzu Warriors\, named for their hard work eradicating Kudzu on Little Warrior Mountain\, have been defending the Conserving Carolina nature preserve from Kudzu (and other exotic species) since 2011 and have made a tremendous impact on the property. Areas that were once a mat of Kudzu vines are now lush with native vegetation! But the fight is not over\, and we need your help! \nJoin us Monday from 8:30-10:30 a.m. at the Norman Wilder Forest parking area/trailhead off of Hwy 176\, between Tryon and Saluda. DESCRIPTION:FENCE needs your help clearing invasive plants on the FENCE property. Join them for a fulfilling day of good work and companionship!  Wear long-sleeved shirts\, long pants\, and gloves\, and bring a pair of hand clippers if you have them. \nWorkdays are scheduled on the second Thursday of each month from 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. and will likely continue through the summer of 2024. \nVolunteers will meet at the FENCE parking lot on Hunting Country Road. For driving directions\, click here. After you turn onto the Fence property\, make a sharp right turn by the covered picnic area. Please note that while this endeavor is included on our calendar\, Conserving Carolina is not managing this activity. SUMMARY:Community Green Habitat Restoration Volunteer Workday
DESCRIPTION:Join us to learn about Privet\, a non-native invasive species\, its history in the south\, and the need for control in alluvial forests. Then we will work together to remove these woody shrubs from the Community Green property along a trail that parallels the Green River in Polk County. \nWe will be using hand saws\, pruners\, as well as our hands when appropriate. SUMMARY:Green Drinks: Conservation Research to Reduce Wildlife Vehicle Collisions\, Improve Human Safety\, & Connect Habitat in WNC
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Liz Hillard\, Senior Wildlife Biologist for Wildlands Network\, will highlight and discuss research findings from two wildlife road crossing projects here in Western North Carolina. Her research includes monitoring reptile road underpasses for wildlife use in Gorges State Park\, and evaluating bear\, deer\, and elk road conflict areas along I-40 in the Pigeon River Gorge. \nLiz Hillard\, Ph.D.\, is Wildlands Network’s Senior Wildlife Biologist for the Appalachian Region. For the last five years\, Liz has been leading research efforts focused on increasing wildlife habitat connectivity and mitigating the effects of roads on wildlife. In addition\, she works to build partnerships and engage the public in conservation efforts throughout the Southern Appalachian region. Liz earned a M.S. in Biology from Western Carolina University in 2013 researching elk habitat selection in Great Smoky Mountains National Park and earned her Ph.D. at Southern Illinois University in 2018. Liz is based in Asheville. \n  \n5:30 p.m.: Grab and drink and network with like-minded locals.\n6:00 p.m.: Enjoy the presentation and learn something new!\n  \nHendersonville Green Drinks is presented by Conserving Carolina\, MountainTrue and Trailside Brewing Co. She is also a Zen practitioner\, an Episcopal oblate\, and a retired education professor\, and she is certified in wilderness first aid. This event is one of our monthly forest bathing walks. Forest bathing is a practice from Japan that has been gaining attention in the West. Forest bathing is not about getting exercise. It’s not about hiking to get somewhere. It’s about being present in the forest\, taking it in. It’s about creating relationships between humans and the more-than-human world. \nMany have asked if Mattie would consider “Writing in Nature”! So\, here it is! \n“This event begins a new series I’ll be offering for those who would like to begin a Nature Journal\, or simply write from their experiences in relationship with nature. SUMMARY:Mud Creek Habitat Restoration: Non-Native Invasive Plant Control and Promoting the Growth of Craft-Grade Rivercane
DESCRIPTION:We will be promoting the growth of craft-grade rivercane to be harvested by Cherokee artisans by removing non-native invasive plant species such as Chinese privet\, Japanese honeysuckle\, and multiflora rose\, as well as clearing blackberry along the leading edge of the canebrakes. We will remove these plants through hand pulling or cutting them at their base and applying a small amount of herbicide to the cut surface. Volunteers must be able to walk moderate distances across rough terrain. All tools and gloves will be provided. Plant ID and removal techniques will be taught on-site. From there we go on a rollicking and revealing journey\, not only through the natural world\, but also into folklore\, history\, mythology\, philosophy and into the lives of people of different cultures\, past and present. You’ll hear how groundhogs have been a source of food\, clothing\, medicine and music for generations of Appalachian folks. You’ll learn the mystical aspects of groundhogs — how they are woven into Native American and European mythology. You will find out the real story of Groundhog Day\, you’ll get clues to the great riddle: How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood? You will learn how groundhogs can teach us about ourselves and even give us perspectives on society\, and world politics\, today! \nDoug Elliott is a naturalist\, herbalist\, storyteller\, basket maker\, philosopher\, and harmonica wizard who lives in Rutherford County\, NC. He has performed at festivals\, museums and schools from Canada to the Caribbean.  He has been a featured storyteller at the National Storytelling Festival in Jonesborough\, TN and has conducted workshops and programs at the American Museum of Natural History in New York\, the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto and the Smithsonian Institution. He has trained rangers for the National Park Service and guided people on wilderness experiences from Down-east Maine to the Florida Everglades.  He was named harmonica champion at Fiddler’s Grove Festival in Union Grove\, N.C.  He regularly writes articles for regional and national magazines.  He has authored five books and produced a number of award winning recordings of stories and songs. \nThe event will take place in the indoor retreat center on the property. DESCRIPTION:Date: February 3rd\, 2024 \nTime: 10:30 a.m. \nLocation: Anne Elizabeth Suratt Nature Center at Walnut Creek Preserve \nSpeaker: Thom Green and Olivia Hall from Hemlock Restoration Initiative \nNorth Carolina’s hemlock trees need your help. We have two species of hemlock in North Carolina\, the eastern and the Carolina\, and the invasive hemlock woolly adelgid threatens both. Though hemlocks are declining\, there is hope to bring them back to their previous glory. The mission of Hemlock Restoration Initiative (HRI) is to work with a variety of partners and existing programs to restore hemlocks to long-term health throughout North Carolina and ensure that eastern and Carolina hemlocks can resist hemlock woolly adelgid and survive to maturity on North Carolina’s public and private lands. Join Olivia and Thom from the Hemlock Restoration Initiative to learn about hemlock ecology\, woolly adelgid biology\, what is being done to help\, and management strategies to take care of hemlocks on your own land. \nOlivia Hall is serving an AmeriCorps term with HRI as the Stewardship and Conservation Education Associate. She graduated with her Masters in Biology in May of 2023 from Northern Michigan University\, and moved to the Asheville area in July. Being from the north country\, she holds a particular affinity for conifers\, and she loves the ecological value and beauty they hold. She is thrilled to be a part of HRI for the year. \nThom Green is the national forests treatment coordinator for the Hemlock Restoration Initiative. He holds an MS in Biology from Western Carolina University where his studies focused on forest ecology of the Southern Appalachians. He has worked for HRI since 2017 carrying out hemlock conservation on public lands and educating landowners about protecting their own hemlocks. Join them for a fulfilling day of good work and companionship!  Wear long-sleeved shirts\, long pants\, and gloves\, and bring a pair of hand clippers if you have them. \nWorkdays are scheduled on the second Thursday of each month from 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. and will likely continue through the summer of 2024. \nVolunteers will meet at the FENCE parking lot on Hunting Country Road. Please note that while this endeavor is included on our calendar\, Conserving Carolina is not managing this activity. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a community road side litter sweep and hike on one of our favorite trails!\nWhen: February 8th\, 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. \nOptional: Hike up Bearwallow Mountain\, 3:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. \nMeet: Fruitland Baptist Bible College\n\nWe will clean up litter along our Adopt-a-Highway section on South Mills Gap Road from 1PM – 3PM. Tools\, safety vests\, and gloves will be provided. We will meet at the Fruitland Baptist Bible College.\n\nAfterwards\, please join us for a hike up Bearwallow Mountain (optional; 3 PM – 4:30 PM). SUMMARY:Green Drinks: Ecusta Trail Update and Plans for the Future
DESCRIPTION:Date: February 8\, 2024 \nTime: 5:30 p.m. \nLocation: Trailside Brewing Co. \nSpeakers: Mark Tooley\, president of Friends of Ecusta Trail (FOET) \nJoin us to learn about the latest developments on planning and construction of the Ecusta Trail\, as well as potential trail enhancements and connections that could occur in the future. Initial construction of the Ecusta Trail will be bare bones\, but there is the potential for many types of amenities that will vastly improve the user experience and involve community collaboration. During this presentation\, Mark will discuss some of the ideas that are being discussed for future development of the trail. Studies have found that the more connectivity a trail has to other trails and popular destinations\, the more useful and desirable it becomes. Mark will share information about how the Ecusta Trail connects with existing trails or those being planned in the region which will help provide connectivity for an enhanced user experience. \nThe Friends of Ecusta Trail (FOET) has been in existence for nearly 15 years as an advocacy organization to create a rail trail on the unused rail line between Hendersonville and Brevard.  FOET has worked with local governments\, private businesses\, non-governmental organizations\, and non-profits to gain community support for the trail during that time.  After Ecusta Rails2Trail LLC. (a subsidiary of Conserving Carolina) purchased the rail line in 2021\, FOET has worked with Conserving Carolina to raise private funds to provide required local matching funds for the federal grants that have been received.  Those grants that have been awarded\, totaling nearly $46 million\, will be used to build the entirety of the Ecusta Trail in the next several years.  Mark is a past board member of Conserving Carolina has been a board member of FOET for nearly 10 years.  He has been FOET’s president for the past two years and resides in Transylvania County. \n  \n5:30 p.m.: Grab and drink and network with like-minded locals.\n6:00 p.m.: Enjoy the presentation and learn something new!\n  \nHendersonville Green Drinks is presented by Conserving Carolina\, MountainTrue and Trailside Brewing Co.
