SUMMARY:Forest Bathing: Nature and Yoga
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special session of forest bathing and yoga at Transfiguration Preserve. This walk will provide time to enjoy an experience in the forest as we discover what the changing season invites us to explore. \nMattie is a certified Nature and Forest Therapy Guide. She is also a Zen practitioner\, an Episcopal oblate\, and a retired education professor\, and she is certified in wilderness first aid. This event is one of our monthly forest bathing walks. Forest bathing is a practice from Japan that has been gaining attention in the West. Forest bathing is not about getting exercise. It’s not about hiking to get somewhere. It’s about being present in the forest\, taking it in. It’s about creating relationships between humans and the more-than-human world. \n \nDr. Mattie Decker’s friend Kiersten Angelos will begin a monthly offering here of Nature and Yoga! Kiersten is an ANFT-Certified Forest Therapy Guide and a Yoga Teacher certified in both Vinyasa yoga (200RYT) and Ayuryoga (500RYT).  She moved here from Albuquerque\, New Mexico where she was certified as an Ayurvedic Practitioner with The Ayurvedic Institute. With all of her training\, she helps guide others to live life harmoniously by incorporating wellness and holistic teachings. Kiersten has been on all of Dr. Mattie Decker’s walks since moving to Asheville\, and is delighted to bring this practice to the community. \nTo keep everyone safe\, these walks are limited to 12 participants. Registration is required. DESCRIPTION:Date: May 20\, 2023 \nTime: 10:30 a.m. \nLocation: Anne Elizabeth Suratt Nature Center at Walnut Creek Preserve \nSpeaker: naturalist and educator\, Clint Calhoun \n  \nDuring this presentation\, Clint will discuss the reasons why Hickory Nut Gorge is special – focusing on its unusual natural communities and some of the special flora and fauna that make Hickory Nut Gorge their home. \nClint is a native of the foothills of Rutherford County. After graduating high school in 1992\, he started his first job at Chimney Rock Park (before it was a state park). He continued to work at Chimney Rock Park while he attended Gardner-Webb University\, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology in 1996. After graduation Clint became the Trails Supervisor for Chimney Rock Park and finished his 11 year career there as the Park Naturalist. Clint went on to serve as the Watershed Coordinator for the Upper Broad River Watershed Program and the Environmental Management Officer for the Town of Lake Lure and is currently teaching high school science at Lake Lure Classical Academy. Clint has worked in the Hickory Nut Gorge area for his entire career\, spanning 25-plus years\, as a biologist\, natural resources manager\, and environmental educator. During that time he has gained significant knowledge of the plants\, animals\, and natural communities of Hickory Nut Gorge and often provides professional expertise to organizations such as The Nature Conservancy\, Conserving Carolina\, and NC State Parks. \nContact Pam Torlina\, pam@conservingcarolina.org\, with questions or for more information.

Cooperative Extension\, Transylvania County Center and Conserving Carolina are offering a series of lectures\, field trips\, and service days to better acquaint the public with the French Broad River\, considered one of the oldest rivers in the world\, and give you ways to explore and act on its behalf. \nThe series is divided into 5 topics – March – June; each topic will have lecture (LEARN)\, field trip (EXPLORE)\, and service day (ACT) components. Lectures will be presented by local experts\, authors\, and scientists. Field trips will highlight the topics introduced by the speakers\, and service days will act upon those topics. \nThe third part of our series: EXPLORE Invertebrates of the FBR Snorkeling Field Trip! \nThe upper French Broad River (FBR) flows just outside of National Forest boundaries and is one of the oldest rivers in the world. This river snorkeling adventure offers many opportunities to observe numerous aquatic insects and other invertebrates such as the French Broad Crayfish\, and maybe even the legendary and protected Hellbender salamander. Oxbow River Snorkeling will lead this event\, there is a fee of $100 per person to participate \nRegistration is required and space is limited to 12 participants. DESCRIPTION:Join the Conserving Carolina “Kudzu Warriors” as they continue the fight against Kudzu\, a non-native and invasive vine\, at the Conserving Carolina owned Norman Wilder Forest off of Hwy 176. \nThe Kudzu Warriors\, named for their hard work eradicating Kudzu on Little Warrior Mountain\, have been defending the Conserving Carolina nature preserve from Kudzu (and other exotic species) since 2011 and have made a tremendous impact on the property. Areas that were once a mat of Kudzu vines are now lush with native vegetation! But the fight is not over\, and we need your help! \nJoin us Monday from 9:00-11:00 a.m. at the Norman Wilder Forest parking area/trailhead off of Hwy 176\, between Tryon and Saluda. Lectures will be presented by local experts\, authors\, and scientists. Field trips will highlight the topics introduced by the speakers\, and service days will act upon those topics. \nThe third part of our series: LEARN Invertebrates of the French Broad River Watershed! \nDr. Luke Etchison\, Aquatic Wildlife Diversity Coordinator\, NC Wildlife Resources Commission\, will enlighten us on the state of the invertebrates of the French Broad River watershed. DESCRIPTION:Background Info:\nPreviously used as an agricultural site\, the Mouth of Mud Creek is a 100+ acre habitat restoration project taken on by Conserving Carolina in 2015. Through several years of restoration work\, Conserving Carolina and several partnering organizations have restored this property back to its original ecological function\, a natural plain along the French Broad River. This remediation has provided significant ecological benefits\, such as creating important habitat for wildlife\, a forest buffer along the river\, and breeding sites for fish\, such as the elusive Muskellunge. Although major construction has been completed\, there is still a lot of on-going work to do! \nTo learn more about this site\, the Asheville Citizen Times recently put out a story about the Mouth of Mud Creek: HERE. \nWorkday Description:\nWe will be promoting the growth of native species by removing non-native invasive plant species\, such as Chinese privet and Japanese honeysuckle\, along Mud Creek and the French Broad River. We will remove these plants through hand pulling or cutting them at their base and applying a small amount of herbicide to the cut surface.\nVolunteers must be able to walk moderate distances across rough terrain. All tools and gloves will be provided. Plant ID and removal techniques will be taught on-site. Meet up for the hike is 10:00 am at the Anne Elizabeth Suratt Nature Center. Hikers should plan to return to the meet up location in the early afternoon. \nWalnut Creek Preserve\, a 2\,100-acre private equestrian conservation community located near Lake Lure. Over 1\,500-acres have been protected by Conservation Easement and preserve over 2-miles of Walnut Creek\, over 25 tributaries to the Creek\, and diverse habitats important to the natural heritage of western North Carolina. Participants will enjoy a hike through the maturing forest to Walnut Creek Falls and to a grassy knoll that offer beautiful views of the surrounding mountains. \n*The Preserve is private land\, and the public is only allowed on the property by invitation\, so take advantage of this unique opportunity to enjoy the serenity of this beautiful property in the glory of spring. \nBe sure to wear appropriate clothing and sturdy footwear. Bring a bag lunch and/or snack and plenty of water for yourself.  Please also remember to bring any personal medication that you may need in the event of an emergency (ie: epinephrine\, nitroglycerine\, insulin\, etc.). Forest bathing is a practice from Japan that has been gaining attention in the West. Forest bathing is not about getting exercise. It’s not about hiking to get somewhere. It’s about being present in the forest\, taking it in. With all of her training\, she helps guide others to live life harmoniously by incorporating wellness and holistic teachings. SUMMARY:Guided Bird Walk along the Green River!
DESCRIPTION:Date: April 30\, 2023 \nTime: 8:00 a.m. \nLocation: Swiftwater Farm \nGuide: Clifton Avery of Ventures Birding Tours \n  \nJoin us for an easy 2-hour guided bird walk in search of residents and early arriving migrants. We will be exploring open grassy fields\, brush\, and edges along the Green River where we will have the opportunity to see and hear a large diversity of species. Highlights along the river should include Louisiana Waterthrush and Yellow-throated Warbler. \n  \nClifton was born and raised in the foothills of western North Carolina. He has always had a passion for nature and the outdoors but did not discover his love for birds until he saw a Painted Bunting off the coast of North Carolina on an early summer morning. Soon after this eye-opening experience\, Clifton had the opportunity to participate in a National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) course in Brazil where he was overwhelmed by the beauty and diversity of the birds of the Amazon Rainforest. Following this experience\, Clifton went to Appalachian State University where he majored in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology with a focus in Ornithology. \nClifton worked for various ornithological research projects after college where he banded and nest searched for a wide range of avian species in Peru\, Colombia\, and Nicaragua. He also worked a couple seasons for the NC Audubon Society studying the Golden-winged Warbler on its breeding grounds in northwestern NC. For the past 5 years Clifton has worked for the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission as the Mountain Wildlife Diversity Technician. His duties include conducting surveying\, monitoring\, habitat management\, and public outreach for wildlife conservation projects focusing on species of greatest conservation need that occur in western North Carolina. He mostly focuses on birds\, flying squirrels\, and Hellbender salamanders. He currently lives in Asheville\, NC and is the father of a 4-year old boy. He does not have any inside pets but the bears and turkeys that pass through his yard regularly suffice. \n  \nFor your safety\, do not attempt this activity if it is beyond your ability and experience. DESCRIPTION:Where: Chestnut Ridge Heritage Preserve \nMeet: Chestnut Ridge Heritage Preserve\, Oak Grove Rd\, Landrum\, SC 29356 (see map link below) \nTime: 10:00 a.m. \nWhat to expect: 5.5-miles\, moderately strenuous; trail type-lollipop; elevation change 928′ \n  \nHikers\, and their dogs\, are invited to join Conserving Carolina and the Foothills Humane Society (FHS) on Saturday\, April 29 for a 5.5-mile hike at Chestnut Ridge Heritage Preserve in South Carolina. \nThis is a great opportunity to give a shelter dog a break from the shelter and allow them to enjoy a nice\, socializing walk in the woods. There is a limit to the number of dogs that can come from the shelter\, so if you’re interested in walking a dog\, please contact Paula Drake\, Volunteer Coordinator for FHS to arrange a time for training orientation\, pairing with the appropriate dog\, and to sign a volunteer waiver. Paula can be reached at\, volunteer@foothillshumanesociety.org. Participants may also bring their own dog on the hike so long as they are kept on leash and do not have any nose-to-nose meetings with the shelter dogs. \nThe 5.5-mile hike is 2.75-miles out and 2.75-miles back and it starts out as relatively easy\, winding through new growth forest and along several streams\, gradually becoming moderately strenuous as the trail ascends Squirrel Mountain through a rich hardwood forest with beautiful rock outcroppings. After reaching the ridge top\, the trail descends Squirrel Mountain through a lush cove forest to the South Pacolet River\, at the base of Chestnut Ridge. \nPre-registration is mandatory\, and space is limited to 20 participants. Celebrating its 25th year\, the most recent Great American Cleanup created 15\,000 opportunities for millions of volunteers to have remarkable results – picking up millions of pounds of litter\, cleaning over 100\,000 acres of public spaces\, and tens of thousands of miles of roadways and shorelines. \nThis year\, we will be partnering with the Town of Columbus again in celebrating “Columbus Proud” Litter Awareness Month – April 2023. \nEvery day\, excessive waste and single-use products pollute our land and water. Litter will always be a problem if we do not tackle it at the source. \nTo be part of the solution:\n1. REFUSE to use plastic single-use items\, such as plastic grocery bags\, plastic tableware and plastic cups\n2. REDUCE the amount of plastic and other waste you use by Bringing Your Own: water bottle\, coffee mug\, bag\, etc\n3. RECYCLE (correctly) as much as possible\n4. BUY products with little or no plastic packaging\, and products made from recycled materials\n5. DISPOSE of your waste properly\, and secure your loads\n6. KEEP storm drains clean\n7. DESCRIPTION:Where: Conserving Carolina’s newest trail addition – Strawberry Gap Trail! \nMeet: Ironwood Square\, Conserving Carolina’s office\, 847 Case Street\, Hendersonville\, NC \nTime: 8:30 a.m. \nTrail info.: 6 miles\, moderately difficult; trail type – out and back \nElevation gain: 1\,164′ \nDrive time: Approximately 35 minute drive \n  \nJoin us for NC Year of the Trail and celebrate trails and outdoor recreation in North Carolina with a hike on Conserving Carolina’s newest trail addition\, the Strawberry Gap Trail. The trail climbs upward for three miles through beautiful\, boulder-strewn forests. About halfway up\, a rock outcrop offers sweeping views over a picturesque valley and range upon range of distant\, blue mountains. The climax of this trail is Blue Ridge Pastures\, where the forests give way to a ridgeline pasture\, revealing dramatic views of the Hickory Nut Gorge\, Bearwallow Mountain\, Little Pisgah Mountain\, and in the distance the highest mountains in the eastern United States.  \nThe trail traverses private land and land permanently protected by conservation easements held by Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy. This trail is another section of the ~100-mile Upper Hickory Nut Gorge State Trail system that that Conserving Carolina is working on and will offer beautiful views. \n*PLEASE NOTE: Dogs are not permitted on this hike. \n  \nPre-registration is mandatory\, and space is limited to 20 participants. DESCRIPTION:Join the Conserving Carolina “Kudzu Warriors” as they continue the fight against Kudzu\, a non-native and invasive vine\, at the Conserving Carolina owned Norman Wilder Forest off of Hwy 176. \nThe Kudzu Warriors\, named for their hard work eradicating Kudzu on Little Warrior Mountain\, have been defending the Conserving Carolina nature preserve from Kudzu (and other exotic species) since 2011 and have made a tremendous impact on the property. Areas that were once a mat of Kudzu vines are now lush with native vegetation! But the fight is not over\, and we need your help! \nJoin us Monday from 9:00-11:00 a.m. at the Norman Wilder Forest parking area/trailhead off of Hwy 176\, between Tryon and Saluda.
