SUMMARY:Forest Bathing: Art and Nature
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a session of forest bathing with opportunities for reflections and expressions in art. \nThis event will offer avenues for creative expression which participants in past Forest Bathing walks have requested. We’ll offer at least one such event each season. \nWe will close with the traditional tea ceremony and depending on weather may return to the house or porch for closing sharing together. \nWe will open all of our senses as we take in the spring forest.  This event includes creative activities led by artist Jim Stilwell and forest bathing guided by Dr. Mattie Decker. \n \nJim is a well-known artist in Asheville\, NC and has worked over many years guiding individuals to come to know their own inner artist. He recently taught a large class outdoors at Flying Cloud Farm and many were beginners who delighted in his intuitive ease of instruction (with gentle modeling and suggestions.) \nMattie is a certified Nature and Forest Therapy Guide. She is also a Zen practitioner\, an Episcopal oblate\, and a retired education professor\, and she is certified in wilderness first aid. This event is one of our monthly forest bathing walks. Forest bathing is a practice from Japan that has been gaining attention in the West. Forest bathing is not about getting exercise. It’s not about hiking to get somewhere. It’s about being present in the forest\, taking it in. It’s about creating relationships between humans and the more-than-human world. \nTo keep everyone safe\, these walks are limited to 12 participants. Registration is required. \nDonations are not required and the amount of your gift is entirely up to you. A donation of $30 is suggested for forest bathing walks\, for those who are able. DESCRIPTION:Date: May 23\, 2023 \nTime: 6:00 p.m. \nLocation: Landrum Library \nSpeaker: Dennis Chastain\, naturalist\, historian and outdoor writer \n  \nBased on thirty years of research\, Pickens County historian\, Dennis Chastain\, will present his slideshow\, Cherokees of the Carolinas; a deep dive into the history and culture of the Cherokees\, who occupied this area for a thousand years. \nChastain says the slideshow covers virtually all aspects of Cherokee culture: How they constructed their houses and other structures; the foods they ate\, including the story of corn and how it changed the lifestyles of all southeastern Native Americans. \nAlso included are the details of the games they played and how central “ball play” was to the Cherokee lifestyle. DESCRIPTION:Date: May 20\, 2023 \nTime: 10:30 a.m. \nLocation: Anne Elizabeth Suratt Nature Center at Walnut Creek Preserve \nSpeaker: naturalist and educator\, Clint Calhoun \n  \nDuring this presentation\, Clint will discuss the reasons why Hickory Nut Gorge is special – focusing on its unusual natural communities and some of the special flora and fauna that make Hickory Nut Gorge their home. \nClint is a native of the foothills of Rutherford County. After graduating high school in 1992\, he started his first job at Chimney Rock Park (before it was a state park). He continued to work at Chimney Rock Park while he attended Gardner-Webb University\, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology in 1996. After graduation Clint became the Trails Supervisor for Chimney Rock Park and finished his 11 year career there as the Park Naturalist. Clint went on to serve as the Watershed Coordinator for the Upper Broad River Watershed Program and the Environmental Management Officer for the Town of Lake Lure and is currently teaching high school science at Lake Lure Classical Academy. Clint has worked in the Hickory Nut Gorge area for his entire career\, spanning 25-plus years\, as a biologist\, natural resources manager\, and environmental educator. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a session of forest bathing at Transfiguration Preserve. This walk will provide time to enjoy a 3 hour experience in the forest as we discover what the changing season invites us to explore. \nMattie is a certified Nature and Forest Therapy Guide. She is also a Zen practitioner\, an Episcopal oblate\, and a retired education professor\, and she is certified in wilderness first aid. This event is one of our monthly forest bathing walks. Forest bathing is a practice from Japan that has been gaining attention in the West. Forest bathing is not about getting exercise. It’s not about hiking to get somewhere. It’s about being present in the forest\, taking it in. It’s about creating relationships between humans and the more-than-human world. \nTo keep everyone safe\, these walks are limited to 12 participants. Registration is required. \nDonations are not required and the amount of your gift is entirely up to you. A donation of $30 is suggested for forest bathing walks\, for those who are able. Cooperative Extension\, Transylvania County Center and Conserving Carolina are offering a series of lectures\, field trips\, and service days to better acquaint the public with the French Broad River\, considered one of the oldest rivers in the world\, and give you ways to explore and act on its behalf. \nThe series is divided into 5 topics – March – June; each topic will have lecture (LEARN)\, field trip (EXPLORE)\, and service day (ACT) components. Lectures will be presented by local experts\, authors\, and scientists. Field trips will highlight the topics introduced by the speakers\, and service days will act upon those topics. \nThe third part of our series: EXPLORE Invertebrates of the FBR Snorkeling Field Trip! \nThe upper French Broad River (FBR) flows just outside of National Forest boundaries and is one of the oldest rivers in the world. This river snorkeling adventure offers many opportunities to observe numerous aquatic insects and other invertebrates such as the French Broad Crayfish\, and maybe even the legendary and protected Hellbender salamander. Oxbow River Snorkeling will lead this event\, there is a fee of $100 per person to participate \nRegistration is required and space is limited to 12 participants. DESCRIPTION:Join the Conserving Carolina “Kudzu Warriors” as they continue the fight against Kudzu\, a non-native and invasive vine\, at the Conserving Carolina owned Norman Wilder Forest off of Hwy 176. \nThe Kudzu Warriors\, named for their hard work eradicating Kudzu on Little Warrior Mountain\, have been defending the Conserving Carolina nature preserve from Kudzu (and other exotic species) since 2011 and have made a tremendous impact on the property. Areas that were once a mat of Kudzu vines are now lush with native vegetation! But the fight is not over\, and we need your help! \nJoin us Monday from 9:00-11:00 a.m. at the Norman Wilder Forest parking area/trailhead off of Hwy 176\, between Tryon and Saluda. SUMMARY:Mud Creek Volunteer Workday
DESCRIPTION:Background Info:\nPreviously used as an agricultural site\, the Mouth of Mud Creek is a 100+ acre habitat restoration project taken on by Conserving Carolina in 2015. Through several years of restoration work\, Conserving Carolina and several partnering organizations have restored this property back to its original ecological function\, a natural plain along the French Broad River. This remediation has provided significant ecological benefits\, such as creating important habitat for wildlife\, a forest buffer along the river\, and breeding sites for fish\, such as the elusive Muskellunge. Although major construction has been completed\, there is still a lot of on-going work to do! \nTo learn more about this site\, the Asheville Citizen Times recently put out a story about the Mouth of Mud Creek: HERE. \nWorkday Description:\nWe will be promoting the growth of native species by removing non-native invasive plant species\, such as Chinese privet and Japanese honeysuckle\, along Mud Creek and the French Broad River. We will remove these plants through hand pulling or cutting them at their base and applying a small amount of herbicide to the cut surface.\nVolunteers must be able to walk moderate distances across rough terrain. All tools and gloves will be provided. Plant ID and removal techniques will be taught on-site. Areas that were once a mat of Kudzu vines are now lush with native vegetation! But the fight is not over\, and we need your help! \nJoin us Monday from 9:00-11:00 a.m. at the Norman Wilder Forest parking area/trailhead off of Hwy 176\, between Tryon and Saluda. DESCRIPTION:Who: You must be a Conserving Carolina member to join this hike \nWhere: Walnut Creek Preserve \nWhen: 10:00 am \nMeet: 179 Wood Thrush Ln\, Mill Spring\, NC 28756 \n~3 miles\, moderate; trail type – lollipop \n  \nThis is a free\, guided hike is for Conserving Carolina members only. Meet up for the hike is 10:00 am at the Anne Elizabeth Suratt Nature Center. Hikers should plan to return to the meet up location in the early afternoon. \nWalnut Creek Preserve\, a 2\,100-acre private equestrian conservation community located near Lake Lure. Over 1\,500-acres have been protected by Conservation Easement and preserve over 2-miles of Walnut Creek\, over 25 tributaries to the Creek\, and diverse habitats important to the natural heritage of western North Carolina. Participants will enjoy a hike through the maturing forest to Walnut Creek Falls and to a grassy knoll that offer beautiful views of the surrounding mountains. \n*The Preserve is private land\, and the public is only allowed on the property by invitation\, so take advantage of this unique opportunity to enjoy the serenity of this beautiful property in the glory of spring. \nBe sure to wear appropriate clothing and sturdy footwear. Bring a bag lunch and/or snack and plenty of water for yourself.  Please also remember to bring any personal medication that you may need in the event of an emergency (ie: epinephrine\, nitroglycerine\, insulin\, etc.). Hike leaders will carry a first aid kit; however\, it may not contain specific medication for your individual needs. \nPre-registration is mandatory\, and space is limited to 20 participants. SUMMARY:Forest Bathing: Nature and Forest Therapy
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a session of forest bathing at Transfiguration Preserve. This walk will provide time to enjoy a 3 hour experience in the forest as we discover what the changing season invites us to explore. \nMattie is a certified Nature and Forest Therapy Guide. She is also a Zen practitioner\, an Episcopal oblate\, and a retired education professor\, and she is certified in wilderness first aid. This event is one of our monthly forest bathing walks. Forest bathing is a practice from Japan that has been gaining attention in the West. Forest bathing is not about getting exercise. It’s not about hiking to get somewhere. It’s about being present in the forest\, taking it in. It’s about creating relationships between humans and the more-than-human world. \nTo keep everyone safe\, these walks are limited to 12 participants. Registration is required. \nDonations are not required and the amount of your gift is entirely up to you. A donation of $30 is suggested for forest bathing walks\, for those who are able. DESCRIPTION:Background Info:\nPreviously used as an agricultural site\, the Mouth of Mud Creek is a 100+ acre habitat restoration project taken on by Conserving Carolina in 2015. Through several years of restoration work\, Conserving Carolina and several partnering organizations have restored this property back to its original ecological function\, a natural plain along the French Broad River. This remediation has provided significant ecological benefits\, such as creating important habitat for wildlife\, a forest buffer along the river\, and breeding sites for fish\, such as the elusive Muskellunge. Although major construction has been completed\, there is still a lot of on-going work to do! \nTo learn more about this site\, the Asheville Citizen Times recently put out a story about the Mouth of Mud Creek: HERE. \nWorkday Description:\nWe will be promoting the growth of native species by removing non-native invasive plant species\, such as Chinese privet and Japanese honeysuckle\, along Mud Creek and the French Broad River. We will remove these plants through hand pulling or cutting them at their base and applying a small amount of herbicide to the cut surface.\nVolunteers must be able to walk moderate distances across rough terrain. All tools and gloves will be provided. Plant ID and removal techniques will be taught on-site.
