SUMMARY:Fall Hiking Series: Reasonover Creek trail
DESCRIPTION:Where: Dupont State Recreational Forest \nMeet: Ironwood Square\, Conserving Carolina’s office\, 847 Case Street\, Hendersonville\, NC\, at 8:30 a.m. \nDistance and difficulty: 5.3 miles\, moderate; trail type – loop \nElevation gain: 700′ \nApproximately 45 minute drive \nOn this hike\, participants will traverse Fawn Lake Road\, passing Fawn Lake\, before joining Conservation Road and crossing an abandoned airstrip. Then\, hikers will pick up the Camp Summit Road which leads to Lake Julia\, Dupont’s first and largest lake at 99 acres. After taking in the stunning view\, the group will continue on the Reasonover Creek trail and crossing the Creek a couple of times along the way (there may be a chance of a wet crossing in these places). \n*Space is limited and pre-registration is required\, and space is limited to 20 participants. Registration\, by RSVP below\, opens at 9:00 am Friday\, October 27\, 2023.   \nContact pam@conservingcarolina.org with additional questions. \nConserving Carolina is sponsoring a Friday hiking series this fall that is free\, guided\, and open to the public. The hikes will meet at Ironwood Plaza (Conserving Carolina’s office) and will leave promptly at 8:45 a.m. Hikers should plan to return to the area in the late afternoon\, time varying with group size\, distance of hike\, and drive time. Car-pooling will be organized at the meeting location. If you’re coming from an area closer to the trailhead\, please contact Pam Torlina (email above) to make other meeting arrangements. \nBe sure to wear appropriate clothing and sturdy footwear. DESCRIPTION:Date: November 18\, 2023 \nTime: 10:30 a.m. \nLocation: Anne Elizabeth Suratt Nature Center at Walnut Creek Preserve \nSpeaker: Ron Lance\, Biologist\, Author\, and Land Manager with the North American Land Trust \n  \nAmong the plethora of tree species native to the southern Appalachian region\, the most emblematic examples belong to 7 different plant families.  The members of these few families provide much of the wildlife support and watershed protection for the region\, as well as presenting a great deal of aesthetic significance.  This program will discuss  the biology of these tree family members with the animal\, human and landscape dynamics that are all linked to the ecological distinction of these mountains. \n  \nRon Lance is stationed at Big Ridge\, near Glenville\, NC. SUMMARY:Post Thanksgiving Trek at Gorges State Park\, to Rainbow Falls
DESCRIPTION:Where: Gorges State Park\, hike to Rainbow Falls \nMeet: Gorges State Park \nDistance and difficulty: ~3 miles\, moderate; trail type – out and back \nElevation gain: 770′ \nJoin us for an approximately 3-mile trek to Rainbow Falls in Gorges State Park. At this location\, the Horsepasture River plunges around 125′ creating mist as the water crashes on the rocks below\, and when the sun hits this mist\, just right\, it creates a rainbow at the base of the falls\, hence the waterfalls namesake. \nThe portion of the Horsepasture River that the hike will feature was designated as a National Wild and Scenic River in 1985. It is an escarpment river with five major waterfalls and numerous cascades\, rapids\, boulders\, and rock outcroppings. Also\, in 1999\, a purchase of land by the State of North Carolina preserved what is now Gorges State Park which encompasses nearly 7\,500-acres. \n*Space is limited and pre-registration is required\, and space is limited to 20 participants. DESCRIPTION:Come join us for a volunteer workday removing non-native invasive species at Carolina Memorial Sanctuary in partnership with the Barkwells Easement!\n\nBackground Info:\nPut under a conservation easement with Conserving Carolina in 2018\, Carolina Memorial Sanctuary is an 11-acre conservation & green cemetery passionate about protecting the land and conserving the environment. In addition to eco-burials\, CMS is a public park that strives to improve the land. The neighboring property\, under a conservation easement and owned by the Barkwells\, is partnering with Conserving Carolina and CMS to work on various conservation projects\, including: stream restoration\, storm water retention\, a pollinator meadow\, bluebird boxes\, invasive species removal\, native plantings\, and stream restoration \nWorkday Description:\nVolunteers will be removing various non-native invasive species\, such as Kudzu\, bamboo\, Chinese Privet\, Japanese Honeysuckle\, and Multiflora Rose from the sanctuary. Using only mechanical techniques\, volunteers will be using pruners\, handsaws\, and pulling to remove invasive plant species. \nVolunteers must be able to walk moderate distances across rough terrain. Tools and gloves will be provided; all materials are sanitized before and after each workday. Plant ID and removal techniques will be taught on-site. You will get dirty\, so make sure to wear appropriate clothing. \nWhat to Bring:\n• Water and snacks or lunch\n• Leather Work Gloves (if you have a personal pair)\n• Small Backpack for Carrying Tools\n• Change of Clothes for Drive Home (recommended) \nWhat to Wear:\n• Closed toed shoes that can navigate off-trail terrain and can get dirty\n• Work pants; dress for the weather

SUMMARY:Forest Bathing: Writing in Nature
DESCRIPTION:Mattie is a certified Nature and Forest Therapy Guide. She is also a Zen practitioner\, an Episcopal oblate\, and a retired education professor\, and she is certified in wilderness first aid. This event is one of our monthly forest bathing walks. Forest bathing is a practice from Japan that has been gaining attention in the West. Forest bathing is not about getting exercise. It’s not about hiking to get somewhere. It’s about being present in the forest\, taking it in. It’s about creating relationships between humans and the more-than-human world. \nMany have asked if Mattie would consider “Writing in Nature”! So\, here it is! \n“This event begins a new series I’ll be offering for those who would like to begin a Nature Journal\, or simply write from their experiences in relationship with nature. We will begin with mindfulness meditation and some “forest bathing” with “texture gathering.”- Mattie Decker \nJournals and supplies will be provided\, however you may wish to bring your own. \nRegistration is limited to 8 participants.

DESCRIPTION:Forest Bathing Mini Retreat:  \nNature and Forest Therapy \n10am-1pm \nJoin us at Transfiguration Preserve* in Bat Cave\, NC\,  that has been a destination for reflection and restoration for more than a century. During this gentle\, 3-hour experience\, we will explore the forest and the banks of the Rocky Broad River while quieting our weary minds and awakening our senses. The experience culminates in a wild-foraged tea ceremony. This walk is led by Kelly Bruce\, a certified nature and forest therapy guide/trail consultant\, and nature connection mentor certified in wilderness medicine and first aid. \nForest bathing originated in Japan where it is known as Shinrin Yoku. It’s not about hiking to a destination and there’s no actual bathing involved. It’s about immersing yourself in the healing qualities of nature and being fully present. \nParticipants should be able to walk one mile on uneven terrain with a moderate grade. Please reach out if you have questions or concerns. \nSpace is limited to 12 participants. \nAdvance registration is required by RSVP below. DESCRIPTION:When: December 9th \nWhere: Green River Game Lands\, Green River Cove trail \nTime: 10:00 a.m. \n6.5-miles\, moderate; trail type-out and back; elevation change\, just over 1000′ \nHikers\, and their dogs\, are invited to join Conserving Carolina and the Foothills Humane Society (FHS) on Saturday\, December 9th for a 6.5-mile hike along the Green River Cove trail in the Green River Game Lands. Conserving Carolina’s Community Engagement Director\, Pam Torlina\, will lead the hike from the trail head off of Green River Cove Road. \nThis is a great opportunity to give a shelter dog a break from the shelter and allow them to enjoy a nice\, socializing walk in the woods. There is a limit to the number of dogs that can come from the shelter\, so if you’re interested in walking a dog\, please contact Dee Anderson\, Volunteer Coordinator for FHS ASPA to arrange a time for training orientation\, pairing with the appropriate dog\, and to sign a volunteer waiver. Dee can be reached at\, volunteer@foothillshumanesociety.org. Participants may also bring their own dog on the hike so long as they are kept on leash and do not have any nose-to-nose meetings with the shelter dogs. \nThe 6.5-mile moderate hike is 3.25-miles out and 3.25-miles back and begins with a gradual incline along a steep bank\, but then levels out as the trail parallels the Green River.  There are a few ups and downs along the trail and\, moving away from the river\, there will be an approximately 250′ elevation gain over one mile before descending back to the river for great views and the perfect lunch spot. There are several stream crossings along the trail and the trail terminates just below the Narrows…with no view of the Narrows\, but beautiful views of the river. \nPre-registration is mandatory\, and space is limited to 20 participants. Please email pam@conservingcarolina.org\, if you’d like to attend. \n  \nHikers will meet at the trailhead by 10:00 a.m. to sign in\, get paired with their dog\, and begin the walk. There is parking across the street from the trailhead\, south of Green River Cove Rd. and east of the Green River\, and there is parking on the north side of Green River Cove Road\, west of the Green River. We would like FHS to have a parking spot across from the trailhead\, if possible\, for ease and safety getting the dogs out and to their walkers.  Hikers should be prepared to return to the area in the late afternoon. \nBe sure to wear appropriate clothing and sturdy footwear. Bring a bag lunch and/or snack and plenty of water (don’t forget snacks for your pooch!). \nIn case of inclement weather\, please contact Pam Torlina by email at: pam@conservingcarolina.org by 8:00 a.m. on the day of the hike and/or check the Conserving Carolina website ‘calendar’ and/or Facebook page to see if the hike will take place. Away back in the Middle Ages people used to go on pilgrimages to the Holy Land\, and when people in the villages through which they passed asked where they were going\, they would reply\, ‘A la sainte terre\,’ ‘To the Holy Land.’ And so they became known as sainte-terre-ers or saunterers. Now these mountains [and trees] are our Holy Land\, and we ought to saunter through them reverently\, not ‘hike’ through them.” \n–John Muir \nThis special two-hour event allows for time in reflection and quiet to simply “be” in nature in the forest and along the river in this pristine setting. Mattie Decker offers these “Sacred Saunters” once monthly as an opportunity to commune and enjoy the restorative qualities of this place. You will have to earn points to unlock game pieces and strive to avoid “raising taxes” in order to “win” the game. \nMatthew Manley is an accredited City Planner through the American Planning Association’s American Institute of Certified Planners. He is the project manager for the City of Hendersonville GEN H Comprehensive Plan. Matthew has been with the City of Hendersonville since December of 2020 and helped to shepherd the city through a time of unprecedented growth. He is originally from Greenville\, SC and attended Presbyterian College (B.S.) and Clemson University (MCRP). He came to Hendersonville after working in Johnson City\, Tennessee and Lyons\, Colorado. He lives in town with his wife\, Molly\, and two toddlers\, Quinn and Townes\, and the family’s two dogs\, Reed and Dega. They are all avid hikers and lovers of nature.  Outside of work\, if he is not on the trail or working in the yard\, you will find him rooting for his Gamecocks and Atlanta Braves! \n  \n5:30 p.m.: Grab and drink and network with like-minded locals.\n6:00 p.m.: Enjoy the presentation and learn something new!\n  \nHendersonville Green Drinks is presented by Conserving Carolina\, MountainTrue and Trailside Brewing Co. Come to Green Drinks to learn more about current environmental issues\, have relevant discussions\, and meet with like-minded people. This is a monthly event and everyone is welcome. DESCRIPTION:Do you have an interest in native plants\, creating native habitat\, and educating others about the benefits of going native?  Join us from 9:30 AM – 2 PM (or as long as you’re able during that timeframe) at the Anne Elizabeth Suratt Nature Center at Walnut Creek Preserve\, 179 Wood Thrush Lane\, Mill Spring. \nWalnut Creek Preserve is a 2\,100 acre equestrian conservation community\, with over 1\,500 acres of permanently protected land around 2-miles of Walnut Creek and over 25 of its tributaries. While a private preserve\, by invitation and appointment\, the preserve offers a monthly educational speaker series with Conserving Carolina at the Anne Elizabeth Suratt Nature Center and it hosts many other organizations and groups of all ages\, like Muddy Sneakers\, inspiring appreciation for the natural world. \nThe next phase of the nature center is to expand the native pollinator gardens\, creating more habitat and offering an immersive educational experience. \nYou can help make this concept come to fruition. The goal is to provide native plant education by the grouping of zones according to wildlife supporting attributes and other interests\, such as: Mast Producers\, Shade Producers\, Berry Producers\, Seed and Nectar Producers\, Butterfly and Moth Larval Hosts\, Native Grasses\, Heath Family Species\, and Regional\, Unique\, and Ornamentally Improved Natives. \nNo experience needed and tools will be provided\, but please bring gloves and gardening tools\, if you have them (hoes\, McLeods\, rogue hoes\, shovels\, etc.). \nFor this workday\, we’ll be clearing brush from the butterfly garden area\, planting trees\, and spreading mulch. \nBe sure to wear appropriate clothing and sturdy footwear. SUMMARY:Hike with Foothills Humane Society!
DESCRIPTION:When: December 16th \nWhere: Green River Game Lands\, Green River Cove trail \nTime: 10:00 a.m. \n6.5-miles\, moderate; trail type-out and back; elevation change\, just over 1000′ \nHikers\, and their dogs\, are invited to join Conserving Carolina and the Foothills Humane Society (FHS) on Saturday\, December 16th for a 6.5-mile hike along the Green River Cove trail in the Green River Game Lands. Conserving Carolina’s Community Engagement Director\, Pam Torlina\, will lead the hike from the trail head off of Green River Cove Road. \nThis is a great opportunity to give a shelter dog a break from the shelter and allow them to enjoy a nice\, socializing walk in the woods. There is a limit to the number of dogs that can come from the shelter\, so if you’re interested in walking a dog\, please contact Dee Anderson\, Volunteer Coordinator for FHS by Wednesday\, November 22nd to arrange a time for training orientation\, pairing with the appropriate dog\, and to sign a volunteer waiver. Dee can be reached at\, volunteer@foothillshumanesociety.org. Participants may also bring their own dog on the hike so long as they are kept on leash and do not have any nose-to-nose meetings with the shelter dogs. \nThe 6.5-mile moderate hike is 3.25-miles out and 3.25-miles back and begins with a gradual incline along a steep bank\, but then levels out as the trail parallels the Green River.  There are a few ups and downs along the trail and\, moving away from the river\, there will be an approximately 250′ elevation gain over one mile before descending back to the river for great views and the perfect lunch spot. There are several stream crossings along the trail and the trail terminates just below the Narrows…with no view of the Narrows\, but beautiful views of the river. \nPre-registration is mandatory\, and space is limited to 20 participants. Please email pam@conservingcarolina.org\, if you’d like to attend. \n  \nHikers will meet at the trailhead by 10:00 a.m. to sign in\, get paired with their dog\, and begin the walk. There is parking across the street from the trailhead\, south of Green River Cove Rd. and east of the Green River\, and there is parking on the north side of Green River Cove Road\, west of the Green River. We would like FHS to have a parking spot across from the trailhead\, if possible\, for ease and safety getting the dogs out and to their walkers.  Hikers should be prepared to return to the area in the late afternoon. \nBe sure to wear appropriate clothing and sturdy footwear. Bring a bag lunch and/or snack and plenty of water (don’t forget snacks for your pooch!). \nIn case of inclement weather\, please contact Pam Torlina by email at: pam@conservingcarolina.org by 8:00 a.m. on the day of the hike and/or check the Conserving Carolina website ‘calendar’ and/or Facebook page to see if the hike will take place. Please also remember to bring any medication that you may need in the event of an emergency (ie: epinephrine\, nitroglycerine\, insulin\, etc.). DESCRIPTION:Date: December 21\, 2023 \nTime: 7:00 p.m. \nLocation: DuPont State Recreational Forest\, Hooker Falls Access Area\, first/lower parking lot \nJoin us to celebrate the winter solstice – the longest night of the year – with a nighttime walk to Hooker Falls\, in DuPont State Recreational Forest. \nStarting from the lower/first parking lot\, the stroll will be along a one-fourth mile trail to the base of Hooker Falls. In the dark of night we’ll create soft moonlight by shining flashlights upon the falls…creating a quiet moment to celebrate the return of the sun to the northern hemisphere. \nParticipants are invited to bring a thermos with a warm (non-alcoholic) drink to toast the sun’s return when we arrive back at the lower/first parking lot. Bring a flashlight for use when necessary. DESCRIPTION:Join the Conserving Carolina “Kudzu Warriors” as they continue the fight against Kudzu\, a non-native and invasive vine\, at the Conserving Carolina owned Norman Wilder Forest off of Hwy 176. \nThe Kudzu Warriors\, named for their hard work eradicating Kudzu on Little Warrior Mountain\, have been defending the Conserving Carolina nature preserve from Kudzu (and other exotic species) since 2011 and have made a tremendous impact on the property. Areas that were once a mat of Kudzu vines are now lush with native vegetation! But the fight is not over\, and we need your help! \nJoin us Monday from 8:30-10:30 a.m. at the Norman Wilder Forest parking area/trailhead off of Hwy 176\, between Tryon and Saluda.
