DESCRIPTION:FENCE needs your help clearing invasive plants on the FENCE property. Join them for a fulfilling day of good work and companionship!  Wear long-sleeved shirts\, long pants\, and gloves\, and bring a pair of hand clippers if you have them. \nWorkdays are scheduled on the second Thursday of each month from 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. \nVolunteers will meet at the FENCE parking lot on Hunting Country Road. For driving directions\, click here. After you turn onto the Fence property\, make a sharp right turn by the covered picnic area. Please note that while this endeavor is included on our calendar\, Conserving Carolina is not managing this activity. Originally from New Bern\, NC\, he now leads SELC’s office in Asheville. He received his undergraduate and law degrees from UNC-Chapel Hill. DESCRIPTION:Date: November 17\, 2026 \nTime: 6:00 p.m. \nLocation: Landrum Library \nSpeakers: Samantha Tessel\, SCDNR Upstate Botanist \nSouth Carolina is home to an incredible diversity of native plants\, including many species that are rare\, declining\, or found only in particular habitats. In this engaging program\, SCDNR Upstate Botanist Samantha Tessel will introduce participants to the fascinating world of South Carolina’s native flora and the work being done to understand and conserve our state’s botanical diversity. \nDrawing on her experience conducting botanical surveys and documenting rare and tracked plant species\, Samantha will share stories from the field and explore how botanists identify\, document\, and monitor plant populations. Participants will gain a greater appreciation for the diversity of plants around us and learn why knowing where plants occur—and understanding the habitats they depend upon—is an important part of conservation. \n  \nSamantha Tessel is the Upstate Botanist with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources’ Natural Heritage Trust. Her work focuses on South Carolina’s native and rare plant species\, including conducting botanical surveys\, evaluating herbarium specimens\, documenting plant distributions\, and contributing data used to identify and monitor species of conservation concern. DESCRIPTION:Nature Preserve Stewards\nJoin us for our weekly Nature Preserve Stewards workday. You will be working with Conserving Carolina Habitat Restoration staff in a caring environment focused on safety and wellness\, learning and camaraderie\, on the land. Volunteers will not be asked to handle any chemicals or herbicides or to operate any fossil fuel-powered equipment. \nWhere and When\n\nWeekly\, rain\, or shine\, with exceptions for extreme weather\nAll workdays will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with a well-earned break in between\nFeel free to choose specific days or pledge yourself to a steady regime as best suits you.\n\n\n\n\nFirst Wednesday: Pleasant Grove – Etowah\, Henderson County\nSecond Wednesday: Mouth of Mud Creek – Mills River/Arden\, Henderson County\nThird Wednesday: Florence Nature Preserve – Gerton\, Henderson/Buncombe Counties\nFourth Wednesday: Land Manager’s choice of Preserve\, location – to be published in each month’s volunteer newsletter and online calendar. This will be a chance to see some neat corners of the world\, with exclusive access. SUMMARY:Fall Hiking Series: Little White Oak Mountain
DESCRIPTION:Where: Little White Oak Mountain \nMeet: Ironwood Square\, Conserving Carolina’s office\, 847 Case Street\, Hendersonville\, NC\, at 8:30 a.m. \nDistance and difficulty: 3.5–miles\, moderate; trail type-figure eight-ish \nElevation gain: 390′ \nApproximately 30 minute drive \nJoin us for a 3.5-mile hike through the scenic Little White Oak Mountain trail system in Mill Spring. We’ll wind our way through hardwood and pine forests\, along quiet coves and ridgelines\, and across clear mountain streams as we explore a variety of natural-surface trails. \nThe route offers a little bit of everything—from the steady climb of The Escalator to the rolling paths of Laurel Loco and Ripsaw Cove\, with plenty of opportunities to slow down and take in the sights and sounds of the forest. With November’s changing leaves\, we’ll keep our eyes open for beautiful displays of fall color along the way. \nThis hike is a wonderful opportunity to experience a growing trail network on land that was once slated for development but is now protected as part of a 440-acre Polk County park. Come explore the mountain\, enjoy the autumn scenery\, and discover one of the area’s newer outdoor destinations! \nHikers should expect a few creek crossings\, and waterproof boots are recommended. There will be plenty of great spots for photos\, and we’re hoping to catch some beautiful fall color along the way! \n*Space is limited and pre-registration is required\, and space is limited to 20 participants. Registration\, by RSVP below\, opens at 9:00 am Friday\, October 30\, 2026.   \nContact pam@conservingcarolina.org with additional questions. \nConserving Carolina is sponsoring a Friday hiking series this fall that is free\, guided\, and open to the public. The hikes will meet at Ironwood Plaza (Conserving Carolina’s office) and will leave promptly at 8:45 a.m. Hikers should plan to return to the area in the late afternoon\, time varying with group size\, distance of hike\, and drive time. Car-pooling will be organized at the meeting location. If you’re coming from an area closer to the trailhead\, please contact Pam Torlina (email above) to make other meeting arrangements. \nBe sure to wear appropriate clothing and sturdy footwear. In this presentation\, author Andrew Waters describes the transdisciplinary approach to farmland preservation profiled in his new book\, American Farmland Preservation: Practices\, Policies\, and the Politics of Place. \nAuthor Andrew Waters is a native of Hendersonville and has worked in land conservation for almost twenty-five years. He has a Ph.D. in natural resource policy from Clemson University and writes frequently about conservation and southern history. But the fight is not over\, and we need your help! \nJoin us Monday from 9:00-11:00 a.m. at the Norman Wilder Forest parking area/trailhead off of Hwy 176\, between Tryon and Saluda. Volunteers will not be asked to handle any chemicals or herbicides or to operate any fossil fuel-powered equipment. \nWhere and When\n\nWeekly\, rain\, or shine\, with exceptions for extreme weather\nAll workdays will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with a well-earned break in between\nFeel free to choose specific days or pledge yourself to a steady regime as best suits you.\n\n\n\n\nFirst Wednesday: Pleasant Grove – Etowah\, Henderson County\nSecond Wednesday: Mouth of Mud Creek – Mills River/Arden\, Henderson County\nThird Wednesday: Florence Nature Preserve – Gerton\, Henderson/Buncombe Counties\nFourth Wednesday: Land Manager’s choice of Preserve\, location – to be published in each month’s volunteer newsletter and online calendar. This will be a chance to see some neat corners of the world\, with exclusive access. Join them for a fulfilling day of good work and companionship!  Wear long-sleeved shirts\, long pants\, and gloves\, and bring a pair of hand clippers if you have them. \nWorkdays are scheduled on the second Thursday of each month from 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. \nVolunteers will meet at the FENCE parking lot on Hunting Country Road. For driving directions\, click here. After you turn onto the Fence property\, make a sharp right turn by the covered picnic area. Please note that while this endeavor is included on our calendar\, Conserving Carolina is not managing this activity. An email with details of the workday\, including meeting place\, will be sent to all who have registered by Friday of the preceding week.\nIn the case of a month with five Wednesdays\, we will not have a formal workday.  Volunteers are encouraged to visit and monitor any of the sites we’ve worked in together in the past.  Please update our projects in iNaturalist (contact Torry@conservingcarolina.org for details) with any interesting observations.  You can log your time spent by emailing mary@conservingcarolina.org.\n\n\n\nWhat to expect:\nA typical day might include: \n\nPulling weeds\nErosion control\nPlanting and tending trees and other plants\nMaking and recording scientific observations\nCreating habitat for all kinds of animals\nMaintaining artificial habitats (bird and bat boxes\, etc.)\nOther tasks as conditions warrant.\n\nWhat to Bring:\n\nAppropriate clothing for four hours in nature: close-toed shoes\, long pants\, and shirt sleeves.
