Participants will learn about the diverse bat species found in the Carolinas\, how bats use echolocation to hunt insects\, the impacts of White-nose Syndrome\, and simple ways people can help protect these beneficial nighttime pollinators and natural pest controllers. \nPam Torlina is the Community Engagement Director at Conserving Carolina. With over 30 years of experience as a field biologist\, naturalist\, and outdoor educator\, Pam has dedicated two decades to advancing the Conservancy’s mission in the Carolinas. Volunteers will not be asked to handle any chemicals or herbicides or to operate any fossil fuel-powered equipment. \nWhere and When\n\nWeekly\, rain\, or shine\, with exceptions for extreme weather\nAll workdays will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with a well-earned break in between\nFeel free to choose specific days or pledge yourself to a steady regime as best suits you.\n\n\n\n\nFirst Wednesday: Pleasant Grove – Etowah\, Henderson County\nSecond Wednesday: Mouth of Mud Creek – Mills River/Arden\, Henderson County\nThird Wednesday: Florence Nature Preserve – Gerton\, Henderson/Buncombe Counties\nFourth Wednesday: Land Manager’s choice of Preserve\, location – to be published in each month’s volunteer newsletter and online calendar. This will be a chance to see some neat corners of the world\, with exclusive access. DESCRIPTION:Native Plant Garden Volunteer Team! \nDo you have an interest in native plants and gardening?  Join us Thursdays from 9 am –  11am at Ironwood Square\, 847 Case Street in Hendersonville\, home of the Conserving Carolina office.  Over two acres has been planted with an amazing collection of native flowers\, shrubs\, trees\, and bog plants.  Volunteers are needed to maintain the extensive garden for community use and educational programming. \nNo experience needed\, but please bring gloves and gardening tools! \nPlease note that hours will change seasonally.  Starting May 1st we will work from 9am- 11 pm every Thursday.  As the weather gets cooler in October we’ll work from 1:00 – 3:00pm every other week.  The website calendar will reflect these changes. \nFor more information or to sign up contact mary@conservingcarolina.org.

SUMMARY:Fall Hiking Series: John Rock
DESCRIPTION:Where: John Rock \nMeet: Ironwood Square\, Conserving Carolina’s office\, 847 Case Street\, Hendersonville\, NC\, at 8:30 a.m. \nDistance and difficulty: 4.8–miles\, strenuous; trail type-loop \nElevation gain: 1\,062′ \nApproximately 50 minute drive \nJoin us for a beautiful hike through Pisgah National Forest on the John Rock Loop Trail. The trail winds alongside streams\, through lush rhododendron and hardwood forests\, climbing to the expansive granite face of John Rock. From the overlook\, hikers are rewarded with spectacular views of Looking Glass Rock\, Pilot Mountain\, and the surrounding mountains…hopefully in their autumn glory! \nThis fairly challenging loop offers a wonderful mix of forests\, flowing water\, mountain scenery\, and one of Pisgah’s most impressive viewpoints. Hikers should be prepared for a sustained climb\, stream crossings\, and uneven\, rocky terrain. Please use caution near the exposed rock face\, where steep drop-offs are present. \n*Space is limited and pre-registration is required\, and space is limited to 20 participants. Registration\, by RSVP below\, opens at 9:00 am Friday\, October 2\, 2026.   \nContact pam@conservingcarolina.org with additional questions. \nConserving Carolina is sponsoring a Friday hiking series this fall that is free\, guided\, and open to the public. The hikes will meet at Ironwood Plaza (Conserving Carolina’s office) and will leave promptly at 8:45 a.m. Hikers should plan to return to the area in the late afternoon\, time varying with group size\, distance of hike\, and drive time. Car-pooling will be organized at the meeting location. If you’re coming from an area closer to the trailhead\, please contact Pam Torlina (email above) to make other meeting arrangements. \nBe sure to wear appropriate clothing and sturdy footwear. Bring a bag lunch and/or snack and plenty of water for yourself. \nIn case of inclement weather\, please contact Pam Torlina by email at: pam@conservingcarolina.org by 7:00 a.m. on the day of the hike and/or check the Conserving Carolina website ‘calendar’ to see if the hike will take place. Please also remember to bring any medication that you may need in the event of an emergency (ie: epinephrine\, nitroglycerine\, insulin\, etc.). Hike leaders will carry a first aid kit; however\, it may not contain specific medication for your individual needs. \nBefore each hike\, you will be asked to sign a waiver form. Areas that were once a mat of Kudzu vines are now lush with native vegetation! But the fight is not over\, and we need your help! \nJoin us Monday from 9:00-11:00 a.m. at the Norman Wilder Forest parking area/trailhead off of Hwy 176\, between Tryon and Saluda. DESCRIPTION:Where: Trombatore Trail \nMeet: Ironwood Square\, Conserving Carolina’s office\, 847 Case Street\, Hendersonville\, NC\, at 8:30 a.m. \nDistance and difficulty: 4.8–miles\, moderately strenuous; trail type-out and back \nElevation gain: 1\,223′ over 1.6 miles \nApproximately 35 minute drive \nJoin us for a scenic 4.8-mile out-and-back hike along the Trombatore Trail near Bearwallow Mountain. The trail winds through a beautiful hardwood forest\, crossing clear mountain streams and passing a magnificent buckeye tree estimated to be more than 150 years old. After a vigorous climb with approximately 1\,223 feet of elevation gain\, we’ll arrive at Blue Ridge Pastures—a beautiful grassy bald offering sweeping\, panoramic views across Hickory Nut Gorge and Bearwallow Mountain. \nThis moderately strenuous-to-strenuous hike offers a wonderful mix of forest\, mountain streams\, wildlife habitat\, and expansive mountain scenery. We’ll also keep an eye out for the changing colors of autumn along the way! \n*Space is limited and pre-registration is required\, and space is limited to 20 participants. We will explore best practices for tree care\, focusing on how these can enhance tree health and reduce risk\, as well as how poor tree management can contribute to raising risk and decline. \nJason Llano is a Board Certified Master Arborist and the owner of Optimal Arboriculture. He holds both Tree Risk Assessment and Prescription Pruning Qualifications from the International Society of Arboriculture. DESCRIPTION:Date: November 17\, 2026 \nTime: 6:00 p.m. \nLocation: Landrum Library \nSpeakers: Samantha Tessel\, SCDNR Upstate Botanist \nSouth Carolina is home to an incredible diversity of native plants\, including many species that are rare\, declining\, or found only in particular habitats. In this engaging program\, SCDNR Upstate Botanist Samantha Tessel will introduce participants to the fascinating world of South Carolina’s native flora and the work being done to understand and conserve our state’s botanical diversity. \nDrawing on her experience conducting botanical surveys and documenting rare and tracked plant species\, Samantha will share stories from the field and explore how botanists identify\, document\, and monitor plant populations. Participants will gain a greater appreciation for the diversity of plants around us and learn why knowing where plants occur—and understanding the habitats they depend upon—is an important part of conservation. \n  \nSamantha Tessel is the Upstate Botanist with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources’ Natural Heritage Trust. Her work focuses on South Carolina’s native and rare plant species\, including conducting botanical surveys\, evaluating herbarium specimens\, documenting plant distributions\, and contributing data used to identify and monitor species of conservation concern. DESCRIPTION:Nature Preserve Stewards\nJoin us for our weekly Nature Preserve Stewards workday. You will be working with Conserving Carolina Habitat Restoration staff in a caring environment focused on safety and wellness\, learning and camaraderie\, on the land. Volunteers will not be asked to handle any chemicals or herbicides or to operate any fossil fuel-powered equipment. \nWhere and When\n\nWeekly\, rain\, or shine\, with exceptions for extreme weather\nAll workdays will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with a well-earned break in between\nFeel free to choose specific days or pledge yourself to a steady regime as best suits you.\n\n\n\n\nFirst Wednesday: Pleasant Grove – Etowah\, Henderson County\nSecond Wednesday: Mouth of Mud Creek – Mills River/Arden\, Henderson County\nThird Wednesday: Florence Nature Preserve – Gerton\, Henderson/Buncombe Counties\nFourth Wednesday: Land Manager’s choice of Preserve\, location – to be published in each month’s volunteer newsletter and online calendar. This will be a chance to see some neat corners of the world\, with exclusive access. SUMMARY:Fall Hiking Series: Little White Oak Mountain
DESCRIPTION:Where: Little White Oak Mountain \nMeet: Ironwood Square\, Conserving Carolina’s office\, 847 Case Street\, Hendersonville\, NC\, at 8:30 a.m. \nDistance and difficulty: 3.5–miles\, moderate; trail type-figure eight-ish \nElevation gain: 390′ \nApproximately 30 minute drive \nJoin us for a 3.5-mile hike through the scenic Little White Oak Mountain trail system in Mill Spring. We’ll wind our way through hardwood and pine forests\, along quiet coves and ridgelines\, and across clear mountain streams as we explore a variety of natural-surface trails. \nThe route offers a little bit of everything—from the steady climb of The Escalator to the rolling paths of Laurel Loco and Ripsaw Cove\, with plenty of opportunities to slow down and take in the sights and sounds of the forest. With November’s changing leaves\, we’ll keep our eyes open for beautiful displays of fall color along the way. \nThis hike is a wonderful opportunity to experience a growing trail network on land that was once slated for development but is now protected as part of a 440-acre Polk County park. Come explore the mountain\, enjoy the autumn scenery\, and discover one of the area’s newer outdoor destinations! \nHikers should expect a few creek crossings\, and waterproof boots are recommended. There will be plenty of great spots for photos\, and we’re hoping to catch some beautiful fall color along the way! \n*Space is limited and pre-registration is required\, and space is limited to 20 participants. Car-pooling will be organized at the meeting location. In this presentation\, author Andrew Waters describes the transdisciplinary approach to farmland preservation profiled in his new book\, American Farmland Preservation: Practices\, Policies\, and the Politics of Place. \nAuthor Andrew Waters is a native of Hendersonville and has worked in land conservation for almost twenty-five years. He has a Ph.D. in natural resource policy from Clemson University and writes frequently about conservation and southern history.
