DESCRIPTION:Background Info:\nPreviously used as an agricultural site\, the Mouth of Mud Creek is a 100+ acre habitat restoration project taken on by Conserving Carolina in 2015. Through several years of restoration work\, Conserving Carolina and several partnering organizations have restored this property back to its original ecological function\, a natural plain along the French Broad River. This remediation has provided significant ecological benefits\, such as creating important habitat for wildlife\, a forest buffer along the river\, and breeding sites for fish\, such as the elusive Muskellunge. Although major construction has been completed\, there is still a lot of on-going work to do! \nTo learn more about this site\, the Asheville Citizen Times recently put out a story about the Mouth of Mud Creek: HERE. \nWorkday Description:\nWe will be promoting the growth of native species by removing non-native invasive plant species\, such as Chinese privet and Japanese honeysuckle\, along Mud Creek and the French Broad River. We will remove these plants through hand pulling or cutting them at their base and applying a small amount of herbicide to the cut surface.\nVolunteers must be able to walk moderate distances across rough terrain. All tools and gloves will be provided. Plant ID and removal techniques will be taught on-site. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a session of forest bathing. This walk will provide time to enjoy a 2 1/2 hour experience in the wonders of the wintry forest as we discover what the dynamic season invites us to explore. \nMattie is a certified Nature and Forest Therapy Guide. She is also a Zen practitioner\, an Episcopal oblate\, and a retired education professor\, and she is certified in wilderness first aid. This event is one of our monthly forest bathing walks. Forest bathing is a practice from Japan that has been gaining attention in the West. Forest bathing is not about getting exercise. It’s not about hiking to get somewhere. It’s about being present in the forest\, taking it in. It’s about creating relationships between humans and the more-than-human world. \nTo keep everyone safe\, these walks are limited to 10 participants. Registration is required. \nA donation of $30 is suggested for forest bathing walks\, for those who are able. Donations are not required and the amount of your gift is entirely up to you. The hike will take you along some of the quieter trails in the popular forest. In four miles of relatively gentle terrain\, you will see two beautiful lakes and gorgeous mountain views from the opening cleared for a (rarely used) airstrip. \n\n\nThis hike is also on the White Squirrel Hiking Challenge 6\, so this hike is an opportunity to check one off the list!\n\nConserving Carolina is proud to have played a major role in the conservation of DuPont State Recreational Forest. In fact\, it’s how we got our start as a land trust! We’ve gone on to help protect thousands of acres of private land adjoining the state forest. And recently we added the 717-acre Continental Divide Tract\, linking DuPont to a 100\,000+ acre conservation corridor.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWHEN: Saturday\, January 22nd \n\nWHO: Must be a Conserving Carolina Volunteer. DESCRIPTION:Background Info:\nPleasant Grove is a property owned by Conserving Carolina as of August 2017. It consists of around 110 acres of floodplain and was a dairy farm in its former life\, beginning in the early 1920s. In the mid-2000s\, the property was graded and slated to become a residential development known as Seven Falls. That development fell through. Now that Conserving Carolina owns the property\, removing non-native invasive species is a priority for increasing the conservation values of the property. Some of the non-native invasive species noted on the property are Japanese honeysuckle\, multiflora rose\, Japanese knotweed\, Chinese silvergrass\, autumn olive\, and privet. \nWorkday Description:\nVolunteers will be removing various non-native invasive species\, such as Chinese privet\, Japanese honeysuckle\, and multiflora rose from the property. Using only mechanical techniques\, volunteers will be using pruners\, handsaws\, and pulling to remove invasive plant species. \nVolunteers must be able to walk moderate distances across rough terrain. We’re preparing for this trail to officially open\, and we could use your help to get the final pieces of field work complete! This volunteer opportunity will have you helping us finish a section of sustainable trail and getting you a sneak peek to one of our newest trails. Keep your eyes open and you never know what you might see!\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWorkday Description: \n\n\n\nThere is opportunity for everyone\, all ages and experience levels are welcome. Joyell will speak about the principles of “smart growth” and ways we can make our cities and towns more livable. This special edition Green Drinks is the first of a four part series entitled Good Growth Makes Good Sense\, designed to focus on Henderson County’s current planning process and the importance of public participation in  the 2045 Comprehensive Plan. The special series will run monthly through May. \nThe state projects that in the next 25 years\, over 39\,000 people will move to Henderson County. To put that in perspective\, that’s more than the current populations of Hendersonville\, Flat Rock\, Fletcher\, Laurel Park and Mills River combined. Housing experts estimate that these newcomers will require 17\,000 new homes. Where will these homes be built? Can our roads absorb this influx of new residents? How can we preserve our rural heritage while building town centers that people love? \nUsing Smart Growth Principles as a guide\, Joyell will explore these questions against the backdrop of the ongoing Comprehensive Planning effort\, which will inform the next 25 years of growth and development in Henderson County. SUMMARY:Hike with Hemlock Restoration Initiative
DESCRIPTION:Conserving Carolina is co-hosting a hike with Hemlock Restoration Initiative (HRI) at the Florence Nature Preserve on February 12\, 2022. This 4 mile hike will start at 11 a.m. and should take around 5 hours to complete including a break for lunch. We will meet at the Upper Hickory Nut Gorge Trailhead to start the hike. The hike will be at an easy pace\, but there will be significant changes in elevation as we loop around the nature preserve property. Large hemlocks will quickly be visible as we climb alongside a small stream\, before eventually making it to the top of a ridge with spectacular views across the valley below. We will discuss Conserving Carolina’s past treatment efforts at the preserve and participants can expect to learn more general info about the preserve and about hemlocks and their conservation. Be sure to bring water\, a lunch\, and any snacks you may want. It is likely to be chilly\, so bring warm layers as well as gloves and winter hats. A sturdy pair of hiking shoes or boots is recommended; it’s possible there may still be some snow on the ground in places. This hike is a great opportunity to engage with Hemlock Restoration Initiative and learn more about their efforts to save and restore our beloved hemlocks.

DESCRIPTION:Where: Eva Russel Chandler Heritage Preserve and Mountain Bridge Wilderness Area \nMeet: Ironwood Square\, Conserving Carolina’s office\, 847 Case Street\, Hendersonville\, NC\, at 8:30 a.m. \n4.5 miles\, moderately difficult; trail type – loop \nApproximately 40 minute drive \n  \nStarting at Eva Russel Chandler Heritage Preserve\, hikers will enjoy a lovely stroll to a granite outcrop with views of the Upstate and observe Slickum Creek as it flows over the edge of the escarpment. The trail will lead the group along Persimmon Ridge Road and then back into the forest and to a scenic pond within the Persimmon Ridge Headwaters\, protected by Naturaland Trust. The trail leads back to Persimmon Ridge Road and then into the Mountain Bridge Wilderness Area where the group will pick up the Mountain Bridge Passage Trail.  The trail crosses several streams\, including West Fork Wattacoo Creek\, and offers several long range views. \nPre-registration is mandatory\, and space is limited to 20 participants. The hikes will meet at various locations (noted for each date) and will leave promptly at 8:45 a.m. Hikers should plan to return to the area in the late afternoon\, time varying with group size\, distance of hike\, and drive time. Car-pooling will be organized at the meeting locations. If you’re coming from an area closer to the trailhead\, please contact Pam Torlina (email above and number below) to make other meeting arrangements. \nBe sure to wear appropriate clothing and sturdy footwear. Bring a bag lunch and/or snack and plenty of water for yourself. \nIn case of inclement weather\, please contact Pam Torlina by email at: pam@conservingcarolina by 8:00 on the day of the hike and/or check the Conserving Carolina website ‘calendar’ and/or Facebook page to see if the hike will take place. Please also remember to bring any medication that you may need in the event of an emergency (ie: epinephrine\, nitroglycerine\, insulin\, etc.). DESCRIPTION:Background Info: \nThe Melrose Falls Property is a ~100 acre preserve located off 176 between Tryon and Saluda\, housing rare endemic plant species\, such as Wild Ginger\, and a diverse array of spring wildflowers. Approximately 0.5mi down the trail\, there is a stunning 50ft waterfall that feeds into the North Pacolet River. \nWorkday Description: \nWe will be preserving the unique biodiversity of the Melrose Falls property by removing non-native invasive plant species such as kudzu\, multiflora rose\, and tree-of-heaven. We will remove these plants hand pulling\, or cutting them at their base and applying a small amount of herbicide directly to the cut surface. \nVolunteers must be able to walk moderate distances across rough terrain. All tools and gloves will be provided. Plant ID and removal techniques will be taught on-site. You will get dirty\, so make sure to wear appropriate clothing to work in. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a session of forest bathing. This walk will provide time to enjoy a 2 1/2 hour experience in the wonders of the wintry forest as we discover what the dynamic season invites us to explore. \nMattie is a certified Nature and Forest Therapy Guide. She is also a Zen practitioner\, an Episcopal oblate\, and a retired education professor\, and she is certified in wilderness first aid. This event is one of our monthly forest bathing walks. Forest bathing is a practice from Japan that has been gaining attention in the West. Forest bathing is not about getting exercise. It’s not about hiking to get somewhere. It’s about being present in the forest\, taking it in. It’s about creating relationships between humans and the more-than-human world. \nTo keep everyone safe\, these walks are limited to 10 participants. Registration is required. \nA donation of $30 is suggested for forest bathing walks\, for those who are able. Donations are not required and the amount of your gift is entirely up to you. DESCRIPTION:Background Info:\nStrawberry Gap Trail is a ~2.8 mile trail right on the continental divide in the Upper Hickory Nut Gorge. The trail features beautiful vistas\, scenic rock outcroppings\, high elevation pastures\, and areas of old growth forest. It will be another section of trail that is added to the State trail system that’s in the Upper Hickory Nut Gorge. We’re preparing for this trail to officially open\, and we could use your help to get the final pieces of field work complete! This volunteer opportunity will have you helping us finish a section of sustainable trail and getting you a sneak peek to one of our newest trails. Keep your eyes open and you never know what you might see!\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWorkday Description: \n\n\n\nThere is opportunity for everyone\, all ages and experience levels are welcome. SUMMARY:Speaker Series: Winter Tree and Shrub Identification
DESCRIPTION:Date: February 19\, 2022 \nTime: 10:30 a.m. \nLocation: Anne Elizabeth Suratt Nature Center at Walnut Creek Preserve \nSpeaker: Ron Lance\, Biologist\, Author\, and Land Manager with the North American Land Trust \n  \nLearn how leafless twigs can be used to identify deciduous woody plants in winter. Participants will receive a detailed introduction to the characters and terminology used to describe twigs and bark\, as well as practice using a dichotomous key. Samples of twigs will be provided\, and participants are urged to bring a hand lens to observe minute details.  For those that are interested\, the indoor portion of this program will be followed by a walk on the Preserve grounds\, giving participants practice in tree identification. Walking a cumulative distance of 1/2 mile\, or less\, should be expected. \nRon Lance is stationed at Big Ridge\, near Glenville\, NC. He has served previous posts in natural history interpretation\, education\, forestry\, and horticulture for over 38 years.  He has authored or co-authored 15 publications and contributed to publications dealing with native woody plants of the Southeastern U.S.\, including “Woody Plants of the Southeastern U.S\, a Winter Guide” by the Univ. of Georgia Press.  He has served on the Board of the International Oak Society since 1997\, including posts as President\, Secretary\, Journal Editor and Conference Chair. \nPLEASE NOTE: \nDue to the COVID-19 pandemic and in order to make this an enjoyable and educational experience for participants\, space is limited to 50 and pre-registration is required. Participants must show their vaccination card or a negative COVID-19 test taken within 48 hours of the event\, with a photo ID\, and all must wear a mask when indoors.
