SUMMARY:Green Drinks: How Are Our River Critters Post-Helene and How Can We Help Them?
DESCRIPTION:Join Luke Etchinson\, Aquatic Wildlife Diversity Coordinator at N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission\, for a dive into the current status of mussels\, fishes\, crayfishes\, and their habitats in the French Broad River watershed following Helene. Luke will be discussing the impacts of loss of habitat on our rivers and what is being done to protect and restore this habitat. \nLuke Etchison is a river conservation biologist for the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission and Past-President of the North Carolina Chapter of the American Fisheries Society. He has been with the NCWRC since 2016 and is responsible for conservation and monitoring of mussels\, crayfishes\, native fishes\, and aquatic snails in the New\, Savannah\, Little Tennessee\, Hiwassee\, French Broad\, and Watauga watersheds in NC. Luke received a B.S. in Aquatic and Fisheries Biology\, M.S. in Aquatic Biology\, and a Ph.D. in Environmental Science from Ball State University\, where he was involved in research on everything aquatic from insects to fishes. His dissertation focused on large river fish communities and their response to habitat change over time. Luke lives in East Asheville on the Swannanoa River. \n  \n5:30 p.m.: Grab and drink and network with like-minded locals.\n6:00 p.m.: Enjoy the presentation and learn something new!\n  \nHendersonville Green Drinks is presented by Conserving Carolina\, MountainTrue and Trailside Brewing Co. DESCRIPTION:Date: July 8\, 2025 \nTime: 2:00 p.m. \nLocation: Saluda Library \nSpeaker: Kristin Cozza\, Trails and Greenways Manager for Conserving Carolina \nConserving Carolina has permanently protected over 49\,000 acres of forest\, farmland\, wetlands and other significant landscapes in our service area which includes Polk County.  Did you know that we also build trails and work with local communities to plan greenways?  Kristin Cozza\, Trails and Greenways Manager for Conserving Carolina will give an overview of Conserving Carolina’s existing trail and greenway projects and provide an update on our ongoing efforts to promote public access to the special places we help to protect including our role in advancing greenway projects across the region. \nAs the Trails and Greenways Manager\, Kristin supports Conserving Carolina’s efforts to build new public access trails and greenways with a particular focus on the Hickory Nut Gorge State Trail and the Saluda Grade Trail.  Kristin has called WNC home for over 20 years and is very grateful to live and work in such a beautiful place.  She has worked as a watershed planner for the State of NC\, in consulting for Confluence Engineering and Headwaters Engineering and for the Appalachian Trail Conservancy.  Kristin has a BA from the University of Virginia in Environmental Science and Masters’ degrees in Public Policy and Environmental Management from Duke University.  In her free time\, she stays busy biking and gardening. \n \nThe Saluda Library Speaker Series programs are made possible thanks to our partnership with the Polk County Public Libraries Systems. \nContact Pam Torlina\, pam@conservingcarolina.org\, with questions or for more information.

But the fight is not over\, and we need your help! \nJoin us Monday from 9:00-11:00 a.m. at the Norman Wilder Forest parking area/trailhead off of Hwy 176\, between Tryon and Saluda. DESCRIPTION:Native Plant Garden Volunteer Team! \nDo you have an interest in native plants?  Join us Thursdays from 9am –  12pm at Ironwood Square\, 847 Case Street in Hendersonville\, home of the Conserving Carolina office.  Over two acres has been planted with an amazing collection of native flowers\, shrubs\, trees\, and bog plants.  Volunteers are needed to maintain the extensive garden for community use and educational programming. \nNo experience needed\, but please bring gloves and gardening tools! \nPlease note that hours will change seasonally.  Starting May 1st we will work from 9am- 11 pm every Thursday.  As the weather gets cooler we’ll work from 1:00 – 3:00pm every other week.  The website calendar will reflect these changes. \nFor more information or to sign up contact mary@conservingcarolina.org.

DESCRIPTION:Our region’s rivers were heavily impacted by Hurricane Helene\, and with breweries playing a key role in our tourism economy\, Conserving Carolina\, MountainTrue\, the French Broad Riverkeeper\, and Oskar Blues are teaming up to help restore our waterways. \nJoin us on June 28 for a river cleanup! We’ll head out for an on-the-water cleanup\, then return to the brewery to celebrate with beer and prizes. \nWe encourage folks to bring their own boats to clean-up but\, MountainTrue can provide a spot on a boat for 20 people if you don’t have one. Please make sure you bring a PFD if you bring your own boat. \nPlease click here to reserve your spot in a MountainTrue boat. \nAll participants\, regardless of whether borrowing a boat or bringing their own\, MUST pre-register so we can adhere to safety standards. \nMeet-up location: Pisgah Forest River Access (3520 Wilson Rd\, Pisgah Forest\, NC 28768).\nShuttling info: Everyone will meet at Pisgah Forest River Access at 1:00 PM and be shuttled to the put-in at Hap Simpson Park. \nAll volunteers are eligible to receive a complimentary annual membership to MountainTrue. DESCRIPTION:We’ll be joining Green Riverkeeper with MountainTrue to Clean the Lower Green! \nWe will meet at the Green Riverkeeper Office in Saluda\, NC at 10 am and carpool down to the river. The exact clean-up location will be announced in an email closer to the event date. \nThis event will be land and river-based. If you want to be on the river\, please plan to bring your own boat (MountainTrue is not providing boats for loan for this event) and appropriate river gear (pfd\, helmet\, paddles etc). \nPlease wear closed-toe shoes\, weather-appropriate attire (including things you don’t mind getting wet). Bring drinking water\, lunch/snacks\, and perhaps a change of clothes for afterward. We will have plenty of trash bags and gloves for use\, along with some hand tools such as shovels\, loppers\, etc.; however\, feel free to bring your own if you would like. \nAll volunteers are eligible to receive a complimentary annual membership to MountainTrue. DESCRIPTION:  \n  \nJoin the Conserving Carolina “Kudzu Warriors” as they continue the fight against Kudzu\, a non-native and invasive vine\, at the Conserving Carolina owned Norman Wilder Forest off of Hwy 176. \nThe Kudzu Warriors\, named for their hard work eradicating Kudzu on Little Warrior Mountain\, have been defending the Conserving Carolina nature preserve from Kudzu (and other exotic species) since 2011 and have made a tremendous impact on the property. Areas that were once a mat of Kudzu vines are now lush with native vegetation! But the fight is not over\, and we need your help! \nJoin us Monday from 9:00-11:00 a.m. at the Norman Wilder Forest parking area/trailhead off of Hwy 176\, between Tryon and Saluda. Meet some live examples of birds of prey and learn more about their day-to-day struggles. This will be a great program for the whole family\, so bring the kids! \nCarlton Burke is a licensed wildlife rehabilitator who operates Carolina Mountain Naturalists\, an education service which presents a variety of wildlife and nature-related programs. SUMMARY:French Broad River Clean-Up with MountainTrue
DESCRIPTION:Volunteers are invited to help clean up trash with Conserving Carolina and French Broad Paddle Trail Manager\, Jack Henderson\, and other members of MountainTrue’s French Broad Riverkeeper team. \nThe clean-up will be boat-based and focus on the French Broad River in Transylvania County between Morrow Landing and Hap Simpson Park. \nMountainTrue can provide canoes (with paddles and PFDs) to volunteers with previous paddling experience\, but attendees are otherwise requested to bring their own boats. MountainTrue will also provide gloves\, trash bags\, a dumpster for trash removal\, and a shuttle to the put-in. \nIf you need to borrow a boat from MountainTrue\, please use the boat request form. (We have a limited number of boats so you must complete this form to borrow a boat). \nALL participants\, regardless of whether you are borrowing a boat or bringing your own\, must sign-up through the “sign-up” link to ensure we can adhere to safety standards for the maximum number of participants. \nPlease bring: \n\nPFD if bringing your own boat.\nAppropriate clothing and footwear for paddling and cleaning up trash (closed-toed shoes recommended).\nDrinking water\, snacks\, lunch.\nChange of clothes for after the event.\n\nKids under the age of 18 are allowed as long as accompanied by a parent/guardian AND are experienced paddlers. \nTo thank you for your time\, volunteers are eligible to receive a complimentary annual membership to MountainTrue. Please email members@mountaintrue.org to request yours. \nREGISTER HERE. \nThis event has been generously-sponsored by Explore Brevard through the Transylvania County TDA’s Transylvania Always grant program. SUMMARY:Green Drinks: Conserving Carolina’s Trails – Conservation and Recreation
DESCRIPTION:Join Conserving Carolina’s Trails and Land Management Coordinator\, Max Howes\, for an update on Conserving Carolina’s trail systems! Conserving Carolina has built and maintains ~39 miles of trail in the region\, showcasing many acres on\, and scenic views from\, protected land. He will be going over what makes trails sustainable\, why they are important to the region\, what it takes to build and maintain trails\, trail history\, Conserving Carolina’s involvement with the Hickory Nut Gorge State Trail\, and more! There will be an update on current trail conditions post-Helene\, new trail projects\, and opportunities to get involved with trail expansion and maintenance. \nMax was born and raised in North Carolina\, visiting areas across the state while calling Chapel Hill his home until he left for college. He attended Denison University in Ohio where he earned a B.A. in environmental studies with a minor in geoscience. Knowing he wanted to return to North Carolina after graduation\, he served two terms with AmeriCorps Project Conserve as Conserving Carolina’s Habitat Restoration and Volunteer Coordinator. He gained a great appreciation for the diverse flora and fauna as well as the mountain trails in the area. He is now Conserving Carolina’s Trail and Land Management Coordinator. In his free time\, he enjoys swimming\, disc golf\, biking\, and watching college basketball. \n\n5:30 p.m.: Grab and drink and network with like-minded locals.\n6:00 p.m.: Enjoy the presentation and learn something new!\n  \nHendersonville Green Drinks is presented by Conserving Carolina\, MountainTrue and Trailside Brewing Co. Come to Green Drinks to learn more about current environmental issues\, have relevant discussions\, and meet with like-minded people. This is a monthly event and everyone is welcome. You don’t have to drink at Green Drinks\, just come and listen. Trailside Brewing Co. offers beer\, wine\, cider\, prosecco and non-alcoholic beverages. DESCRIPTION:FENCE needs your help clearing invasive plants on the FENCE property. Join them for a fulfilling day of good work and companionship!  Wear long-sleeved shirts\, long pants\, and gloves\, and bring a pair of hand clippers if you have them. \nWorkdays are scheduled on the second Thursday of each month from 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. and will likely continue through the summer of 2026. \nVolunteers will meet at the FENCE parking lot on Hunting Country Road. For driving directions\, click here. After you turn onto the Fence property\, make a sharp right turn by the covered picnic area. Photo by Kim Bailey \nDate: June 10\, 2025 \nTime: 6:00 p.m. \nSpeaker: Brad Nelson \nThis program will be great for all ages\, and it will introduce basic information about butterflies and some of the species common in our area\, with a focus on the Monarch butterfly. Keeping it fun and entertaining\, Brad will discuss the Monarchs life cycle\, different types of milkweeds common in our area\, and which milkweeds are more likely to attract Monarchs. He will also provide gardening techniques that will help attract Monarchs\, describing specific types of plants that are best for enticing them and which are better to help perpetuate the species. The presentation will also include an explanation of migration routes and when to expect Monarchs in this area. This is sure to be a great program for the whole family\, so bring the kids! \nBrad has been involved with Monarch Watch\, the University of Kansas tagging program\, for the last 5 years. Whether you’re a landowner or an environmental enthusiast\, you’ll learn about what you can do to preserve hemlocks on your property and beyond. \nOlivia Hall is the Communications and Educational Outreach Manager for HRI. She graduated with her Masters in Biology in May of 2023 from Northern Michigan University and moved to the Asheville area in July of the same year. Being from the north country\, she holds a particular affinity for conifers\, and she loves the ecological value and beauty they hold. \nAyla Busch is an AmeriCorps Project Conserve member serving as Stewardship and Conservation Education Associate with Hemlock Restoration Initiative. She grew up in upstate New York\, and attended University of North Carolina Wilmington\, where she learned that she loved connecting with new people through environmental outreach. DESCRIPTION:You’re Invited on a Walk-n-Talk Along the Greenway \nOn Tuesday\, June 10th\, at 9:00am join Mike Huffman\, the City of Hendersonville’s Stormwater and Floodplain Administrator\, for a walk entitled Tracking Our Tributaries: Exploring Mud Creek along the Oklawaha Greenway. Participants will meet at the round gazebo at Patton Park.The early start time of 9:00am was set to avoid the summer heat. It happens rain or shine\, and will last an hour and a half. \nHuffman will talk about\, and point out as he walks\, where the major floodwaters came from during Hurricane Helene. He will explain where the water goes when it rains\, and answer questions about his work in stormwater and floodwater management. \nJoin the Friends of the Oklawaha Greenway on this walk to learn about your ecological address. Most likely\, you live in the Mud Creek Watershed\, a 113 square mile area located within central Henderson County and encompassing the municipalities of Hendersonville\, Laurel Park\, and Flat Rock. It consists of five sub-watersheds: Upper Mud Creek\, Lower Mud Creek\, Bat Fork\, Devil’s Fork\, and Clear Creek.

DESCRIPTION:  \n  \nJoin the Conserving Carolina “Kudzu Warriors” as they continue the fight against Kudzu\, a non-native and invasive vine\, at the Conserving Carolina owned Norman Wilder Forest off of Hwy 176. \nThe Kudzu Warriors\, named for their hard work eradicating Kudzu on Little Warrior Mountain\, have been defending the Conserving Carolina nature preserve from Kudzu (and other exotic species) since 2011 and have made a tremendous impact on the property. Areas that were once a mat of Kudzu vines are now lush with native vegetation! But the fight is not over\, and we need your help! \nJoin us Monday from 9:00-11:00 a.m. at the Norman Wilder Forest parking area/trailhead off of Hwy 176\, between Tryon and Saluda.
