DESCRIPTION:Date: April 8\, 2025 \nTime: 2:00 p.m. \nLocation: Saluda Library \nSpeaker: David O’Brien \nThe history of the Grade spans from 1830 in Charleston\, SC\, to 2001 with the last train up the hill. This presentation will address many of the important events that occurred during that period and several advancements in railroading that came from operation on the Grade. \nDavid O’Brien moved across the valley from Melrose (bottom of the Grade) 16 years ago. He became active in the Saluda Historic Depot and Museum in 2017 as a docent. DESCRIPTION:  \n  \nJoin the Conserving Carolina “Kudzu Warriors” as they continue the fight against Kudzu\, a non-native and invasive vine\, at the Conserving Carolina owned Norman Wilder Forest off of Hwy 176. \nThe Kudzu Warriors\, named for their hard work eradicating Kudzu on Little Warrior Mountain\, have been defending the Conserving Carolina nature preserve from Kudzu (and other exotic species) since 2011 and have made a tremendous impact on the property. Areas that were once a mat of Kudzu vines are now lush with native vegetation! But the fight is not over\, and we need your help! \nJoin us Monday from 9:00-11:00 a.m. at the Norman Wilder Forest parking area/trailhead off of Hwy 176\, between Tryon and Saluda. DESCRIPTION:Date: April 6\, 2025 \nTime: 9:00 a.m. \nLocation: Mud Creek \nGuide: Mike Resch \nJoin Conserving Carolina for a free\, guided bird walk at our flagship French Broad River restoration site\, Mud Creek! This walk will be led by Mike Resch\, an experienced\, professional\, and expert birder. Mike will lead participants on an easy walk through the preserve\, where we’ll be looking and listening for sparrows\, blackbirds\, and early spring species migrating back to and through the area. Mike will also share tips about how to identify these birds in the field. \nMike has been a birder since getting his first pair of binoculars at 8 years of age. Since then\, he’s birded throughout the US and Canada\, birding extensively in all 50 states and 10 provinces.  Mike’s state birding passion is chronicled in his blog – www.statebirding.blogspot.com. He formerly lived in New England where he was the Chair of the New Hampshire Rare Birds Committee. His technical specialty as an environmental engineer is in cleaning up hazardous waste sites. Since retiring to Hendersonville\, NC\, Mike has enjoyed birding the many excellent birding spots in the NC mountains and the upstate of SC. He is a co-coordinator for the western NC region of the North Carolina Bird Atlas and a guide for Ventures Birding Tours. Mike/Ventures Birding Tours has graciously donated their time to lead this walk. \nFor your safety\, do not attempt this activity if it is beyond your ability and experience. Participants should wear appropriate clothing and footwear and bring a snack\, water\, and any personal medication that may be required. DESCRIPTION:Native Plant Garden Volunteer Team! \nDo you have an interest in native plants?  Join us Thursdays from 1pm –  4pm at Ironwood Square\, 847 Case Street in Hendersonville\, home of the Conserving Carolina office.  Over two acres has been planted with an amazing collection of native flowers\, shrubs\, trees\, and bog plants.  Volunteers are needed to maintain the extensive garden for community use and educational programming. \nNo experience needed\, but please bring gloves and gardening tools! \nPlease note that hours will change seasonally.  For the warmer months we will work from 9AM – Noon.  As the weather gets cooler we’ll work from 1:00 – 4:00PM.  The website calendar will reflect these changes. \nFor more information or to sign up contact mary@conservingcarolina.org.

SUMMARY:Edneyville Library Speaker Series: An Overview of Native Brook Trout Conservation in North Carolina
DESCRIPTION:Date: April 2\, 2025 \nTime: 10:00 a.m. \nLocation: Edneyville Library \nSpeakers: Jacob Rash\, Coldwater Research Coordinator for the NC Wildlife Resources Commission \nJoin us for a presentation by Jacob Rash\, Coldwater Research Coordinator for the NC Wildlife Resources Commission (NCWRC)\, and learn about efforts to help conserve North Carolina’s native Brook Trout. Brook Trout hold cultural and ecological significance in North Carolina\, and their restoration is vital for the state’s fisheries and the overall ecosystem. Rash and his team are actively involved in restoring Brook Trout populations\, working to understand their genetics\, and identify areas for habitat restoration. Restoring Brook Trout populations is an ongoing challenge\, requiring collaboration with various partners\, including private landowners\, government agencies\, and conservation organizations. The NCWRC has undertaken numerous restoration projects\, including stream bank revival and culvert removal to improve Brook Trout habitat and connectivity. Rash and his team have also been working to develop a genetic baseline for Brook Trout in North Carolina to better understand the populations and their genetic diversity. Come learn about this fascinating fish and its importance in the ecosystem! \nJacob Rash is Coldwater Research Coordinator for the NC Wildlife Resources Commission\, where he assists with the coordination of applied research and management of the State’s trout resources. He received his B.S. in Zoology from NC State University and M.S. in Fisheries and Wildlife Sciences from Virginia Tech. After graduate school\, he worked with freshwater mussels as a Research Specialist at Virginia Tech until he joined the NC Wildlife Resources Commission. Jacob has co-authored numerous publications throughout his career\, and in 2023\, he began serving as Chair of the Eastern Brook Trout Joint Venture’s Steering Committee. SUMMARY:Landrum Library Speaker Series: “Something in These Hills: the culture of family land in southern Appalachia”
DESCRIPTION:Date: March 25\, 2025 \nTime: 6:00 p.m. \nLocation: Landrum Library \nSpeaker: Dr. Mike Coggeshall\, Professor of Anthropology at Clemson University \nWhat is the “something in these hills” that ties mountain families to family land in the southern Appalachians?  This talk explores two themes: the duality of the southern Appalachians as both a menacing and majestic landscape and the emotional relationship to family land characteristic of long-term residents of these mountains.  How can the same geographical space be both?  Utilizing the voices and perspectives of long-term residents\, the talk provides a more fundamental understanding of the ”something in these hills” that holds people in place. \nJohn M. Coggeshall\, Professor of Anthropology\, Dept. of Sociology\, Anthropology\, and Criminal Justice\, Clemson University\, attended Southern Illinois University-Carbondale where he achieved a Ph.D. in Anthropology.  In 1988\, he joined the faculty of Clemson University where he is currently employed.  Dr. Coggeshall has an interest in American regional and folk groups and sense of place in southern Appalachia.  He has published: Something in These Hills: the Culture of Family Land in Southern Appalachia (University of North Carolina Press\, 2022); Liberia\, South Carolina: an African American Appalachian Community (University of North Carolina Press\, 2018); Carolina Piedmont Country (University Press of Mississippi\, 1996); Vernacular Architecture in Southern Illinois: the Ethnic Heritage (with J. Nast\, SIU Press\, 1988); “Symbols of Division: Plantations along South Carolina’s coast\,” Home Cultures\, 5:1 (2008); and “A culture of servitude: the impact of tourism and development on South Carolina’s coast” (with L. Faulkenberry\, K. Backman\, and S. Frank will provide evidence and explain that science is real\, it effects all of us\, and it’s okay to question science. Frank will also speak about Hurricane Helene and this new period of climate change charged weather and provide some new advice about being prepared. \nFrank Graff has spent his career telling stories on television\, explaining complex topics and showing viewers things they’ve never seen. Frank started his new career in Northern Maine and has worked in local television newsrooms in markets including Cincinnati\, Baltimore\, Norfolk and Raleigh\, and has reported for network news operations. But he’s always been fascinated by stories related to science. The Ohio native got the opportunity to put that passion into practice when he joined PBS North Carolina and helped launch Sci NC. \nFrank and the science team use their storytelling skills to bring science out of the labs at the state’s universities\, government agencies and industries to show how the research and discoveries impact our daily lives. They hope their stories help to create good science citizens and inspire the next generation of scientists. \nFrank is a graduate of Ohio University with a bachelor’s degree in journalism and a master’s degree in political science. DESCRIPTION:Come join Dr. Mattie Decker for her special offering of “Spring Equinox Writing in Nature.” Writing in Nature includes an experience of Shinrin Yoku\, known as “Forest Bathing” with Mattie Decker\, ANFT certified guide and mindfulness teacher. We gather in a circle\, with mindfulness meditation before embarking into the forest to “find our spot”\, our tree\, or place we are drawn to sit and write. Afterward there are refreshments shared\, as we tell about our experiences\, often reading what we’ve written. Participants are also encouraged to bring writing they are working on\, or journals to continue projects they are midst. There are always surprises\, and amazement in how the medicine of the forest provides us what is uniquely needed for each of us. For new writers\, or those who are writers\, this experience offers a dimension of awakening to the deep relationship we each have in Nature. \n  \n**Participants will meet up at the back parking lot of the Lake Lure Inn in Lake Lure and will caravan together to the event location on a privately conserved property adjoining Chimney Rock State Park. This walk will be led by Mike Resch\, an experienced\, professional\, and expert birder. Mike will lead participants on an easy walk through the preserve\, where we’ll be looking and listening for sparrows\, blackbirds\, and other late wintering species. Mike will also share tips about how to identify these birds in the field. \nMike has been a birder since getting his first pair of binoculars at 8 years of age. Since then\, he’s birded throughout the US and Canada\, birding extensively in all 50 states and 10 provinces.  Mike’s state birding passion is chronicled in his blog – www.statebirding.blogspot.com. He formerly lived in New England where he was the Chair of the New Hampshire Rare Birds Committee. His technical specialty as an environmental engineer is in cleaning up hazardous waste sites. Since retiring to Hendersonville\, NC\, Mike has enjoyed birding the many excellent birding spots in the NC mountains and the upstate of SC. He is a co-coordinator for the western NC region of the North Carolina Bird Atlas and a guide for Ventures Birding Tours. Mike/Ventures Birding Tours has graciously donated their time to lead this walk. \nFor your safety\, do not attempt this activity if it is beyond your ability and experience. DESCRIPTION:Barred Owl by Sara Jackson \nDate: March 11\, 2025 \nTime: 2:00 p.m. \nLocation: Saluda Library \nSpeaker: Pam Torlina\, Community Engagement Director \nTorlina’s presentation will focus on the several species of owls found in the Carolinas and highlight the special characteristics that make them successful predators of the night. \nDuring the presentation\, participants will get an up-close look at feathers\, talons\, and owl specimens in order to gain a better understanding of their unique characteristics (it is illegal to possess any part of a migratory bird without the proper permitting\, and Conserving Carolina is permitted by the federal government to collect and possess bird specimens to be used for educational purposes). \nTorlina\, a biologist\, has been with the Conservancy for 18 years.  She has over 25 years of experience as a field biologist\, naturalist\, and outdoor educator.  She has worked with the South Carolina State Park Service\, the City of Greenville Parks and Recreation-Youth Bureau\, the New York State Office of Parks and Recreation and Historic Preservation\, and Haliburton Forest and Wild Life Reserve\, in Haliburton\, Ontario\, Canada\, where she has performed annual migratory and breeding bird surveys\, surveys on nocturnal owls\, hawks and woodpeckers\, presented educational programs on birds for adults and children\, conducted nest searches and nest record data in the U.S. and Canada\, participated in data collection for the most recent Ontario Breeding Bird Atlas\, she volunteered with a licensed bird bander in the past\, and she is a co-regional coordinator for the current North Carolina Bird Atlas. \n \nThe Saluda Library Speaker Series programs are made possible thanks to our partnership with the Polk County Public Libraries Systems. \nContact Pam Torlina\, pam@conservingcarolina.org\, with questions or for more information.

DESCRIPTION:  \n  \nJoin the Conserving Carolina “Kudzu Warriors” as they continue the fight against Kudzu\, a non-native and invasive vine\, at the Conserving Carolina owned Norman Wilder Forest off of Hwy 176. \nThe Kudzu Warriors\, named for their hard work eradicating Kudzu on Little Warrior Mountain\, have been defending the Conserving Carolina nature preserve from Kudzu (and other exotic species) since 2011 and have made a tremendous impact on the property. Areas that were once a mat of Kudzu vines are now lush with native vegetation! But the fight is not over\, and we need your help! \nJoin us Monday from 9:00-11:00 a.m. at the Norman Wilder Forest parking area/trailhead off of Hwy 176\, between Tryon and Saluda. GPS points (35.22458\, -82.27428) \nWe will supply tools and gloves\, but please bring water and a snack for yourself\, dress appropriately and bring your own work gloves if you’d like. \nTo RSVP or for more information email pam@conservingcarolina.org.

DESCRIPTION:Native Plant Garden Volunteer Team! \nDo you have an interest in native plants?  Join us Thursdays from 1pm –  4pm at Ironwood Square\, 847 Case Street in Hendersonville\, home of the Conserving Carolina office.  Over two acres has been planted with an amazing collection of native flowers\, shrubs\, trees\, and bog plants.  Volunteers are needed to maintain the extensive garden for community use and educational programming. \nNo experience needed\, but please bring gloves and gardening tools! \nPlease note that hours will change seasonally.  For the warmer months we will work from 9AM – Noon.  As the weather gets cooler we’ll work from 1:00 – 4:00PM.  The website calendar will reflect these changes. \nFor more information or to sign up contact mary@conservingcarolina.org.
