SUMMARY:Guided Bird Walk along the Green River!
DESCRIPTION:Date: July 22\, 2023 \nTime: 8:00 a.m. \nLocation: Swiftwater Farm \nGuide: Clifton Avery of Ventures Birding Tours \n  \nJoin us for an easy 2-hour guided bird walk in search of residents and Neotropical migrants that visited the region to raise their young. We will be exploring open grassy fields\, brush\, and edges along the Green River where we will have the opportunity to see and hear a large diversity of species. Highlights along the river should include Louisiana Waterthrush and Yellow-throated Warbler. \n  \nClifton was born and raised in the foothills of western North Carolina. He has always had a passion for nature and the outdoors but did not discover his love for birds until he saw a Painted Bunting off the coast of North Carolina on an early summer morning. Soon after this eye-opening experience\, Clifton had the opportunity to participate in a National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) course in Brazil where he was overwhelmed by the beauty and diversity of the birds of the Amazon Rainforest. Following this experience\, Clifton went to Appalachian State University where he majored in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology with a focus in Ornithology. \nClifton worked for various ornithological research projects after college where he banded and nest searched for a wide range of avian species in Peru\, Colombia\, and Nicaragua. He also worked a couple seasons for the NC Audubon Society studying the Golden-winged Warbler on its breeding grounds in northwestern NC. For the past 5 years Clifton has worked for the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission as the Mountain Wildlife Diversity Technician. His duties include conducting surveying\, monitoring\, habitat management\, and public outreach for wildlife conservation projects focusing on species of greatest conservation need that occur in western North Carolina. He mostly focuses on birds\, flying squirrels\, and Hellbender salamanders. He currently lives in Asheville\, NC and is the father of a 4-year old boy. He does not have any inside pets but the bears and turkeys that pass through his yard regularly suffice. \n  \nFor your safety\, do not attempt this activity if it is beyond your ability and experience. Participants should bring binoculars and wear appropriate clothing and footwear and bring a snack\, water\, and any personal medication that may be required. \nIn case of inclement weather\, please contact Pam Torlina by e-mail\, pam@conservingcarolina.org\, by 7 a.m. on the day of the walk and/or check the Conserving Carolina website or Facebook page to see if the walk will take place. \nSpace is limited. SUMMARY:Forest Bathing: Yoga in Nature
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special session of forest bathing and yoga at Transfiguration Preserve. This walk will provide time to enjoy an experience in the forest as we discover what the changing season invites us to explore. \nMattie is a certified Nature and Forest Therapy Guide. She is also a Zen practitioner\, an Episcopal oblate\, and a retired education professor\, and she is certified in wilderness first aid. This event is one of our monthly forest bathing walks. Forest bathing is a practice from Japan that has been gaining attention in the West. Forest bathing is not about getting exercise. It’s not about hiking to get somewhere. It’s about being present in the forest\, taking it in. It’s about creating relationships between humans and the more-than-human world. \n  \nDr. Mattie Decker’s friend Kiersten Angelos will begin a monthly offering here of Nature and Yoga! Kiersten is an ANFT-Certified Forest Therapy Guide and a Yoga Teacher certified in both Vinyasa yoga (200RYT) and Ayuryoga (500RYT).  She moved here from Albuquerque\, New Mexico where she was certified as an Ayurvedic Practitioner with The Ayurvedic Institute. With all of her training\, she helps guide others to live life harmoniously by incorporating wellness and holistic teachings. Kiersten has been on all of Dr. Mattie Decker’s walks since moving to Asheville\, and is delighted to bring this practice to the community. \nTo keep everyone safe\, these walks are limited to 12 participants. Registration is required. DESCRIPTION:Join the Conserving Carolina “Kudzu Warriors” as they continue the fight against Kudzu\, a non-native and invasive vine\, at the Conserving Carolina owned Norman Wilder Forest off of Hwy 176. \nThe Kudzu Warriors\, named for their hard work eradicating Kudzu on Little Warrior Mountain\, have been defending the Conserving Carolina nature preserve from Kudzu (and other exotic species) since 2011 and have made a tremendous impact on the property. Areas that were once a mat of Kudzu vines are now lush with native vegetation! But the fight is not over\, and we need your help! \nJoin us Monday from 9:00-11:00 a.m. at the Norman Wilder Forest parking area/trailhead off of Hwy 176\, between Tryon and Saluda. Since that time\, the number of counties with confirmed observations has increased to 26\, with established populations in 5 western counties. As the only mammal in North Carolina with its own shell\, come learn more about our unique new resident and how you can help us monitor its range expansion. \n  \nColleen is a Certified Wildlife Biologist\, is the Black Bear and Furbearer Biologist for North Carolina. She received her Bachelor’s degree in wildlife biology from Ohio University and her Masters of Science in Wildlife Management from Virginia Tech. Colleen has had a career in wildlife for over 25 years\, co-authored over 30 peer-reviewed journal publications\, and has worked with brown bears\, black bears\, island foxes\, gray wolves\, coyotes\, river otters\, deer\, goshawks\, and other species throughout the United States. SUMMARY:Pleasant Grove Volunteer Workday
DESCRIPTION:Background Info:\nPleasant Grove is a property owned by Conserving Carolina as of August 2017. It consists of around 110 acres of floodplain and was a dairy farm in its former life\, beginning in the early 1920s. In the mid-2000s\, the property was graded and slated to become a residential development known as Seven Falls. That development fell through. Now that Conserving Carolina owns the property\, removing non-native invasive species is a priority for increasing the conservation values of the property. Some of the non-native invasive species noted on the property are Japanese honeysuckle\, multiflora rose\, Japanese knotweed\, Chinese silvergrass\, autumn olive\, and privet. \nWorkday Description:\nVolunteers will be removing various non-native invasive species\, such as Chinese privet\, Japanese honeysuckle\, and multiflora rose from the property. Using only mechanical techniques\, volunteers will be using pruners\, handsaws\, and pulling to remove invasive plant species. \nVolunteers must be able to walk moderate distances across rough terrain. Tools and gloves will be provided; all materials are sanitized before and after each workday. Plant ID and removal techniques will be taught on-site. Today\, although much smaller\, only the nine-banded armadillo exists in the Carolinas. Join us as we discover the “little armored one.” \nTim is native South Carolinian and he has studied and taught as a naturalist and biologist throughout the southeast for more than 30 years. For the past 21 years he has been the Interpretive Ranger and Naturalist for South Carolina State Park Service’s Mountain Bridge Wilderness Area (Jones Gap and Caesar’s Head SPs) where he conducts research and provides educational programs for children and adults. He is a coordinator and instructor for the South Carolina Master Naturalist Program and is an Educational Leadership Partner for the South Carolina Aquarium. DESCRIPTION:Date: July 11\, 2023 \nTime: 10:30 a.m. \nLocation: Landrum Library \nSpeaker: Fred Weisbecker\, retired NC Wildlife Resources Commission Game Warden \n  \nThis is part of the Landrum Library’s Summer Reading Program for Kids\, ages 6-12 years old!  During this program\, Fred will discuss skull identification and provide hands on learning with many different skulls. He will teach us how to carefully gather and preserve these natural artifacts and to use skulls found on a trail or in the woods as a clue to the life and likely causes of death of the creature whose skull we find. This is a hands on and interactive program so bring the kids!  This is sure to be fun for the whole family! \nFred grew up in the greater New York City area.  He developed his love of the natural world visiting New York state parks in the Catskill Mountains. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special session of forest bathing at Transfiguration Preserve. Sunday “sacred saunters” provide space for contemplation and reflection in nature\, opening and closing with a sharing circle. Each of these offerings will be led by Mattie Decker and will allow plenty of space for individual exploration in ways that respect each person’s unique needs. \nSunday\, July 9th: 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM \n“People ought to saunter – not hike! Do you know the origin of that word ‘saunter?’ It’s a beautiful word. Back in the Middle Ages people used to go on pilgrimages to the Holy Land\, and when people in the villages through which they passed asked where they were going\, they would reply\, “A la sainte terre\,’ ‘To the Holy Land.’ And so they became known as sainte-terre-ers or saunterers. Now these [trees] are our Holy Land\, and we ought to saunter through them reverently\, not ‘hike’ through them.”- John Muir \nMattie is a certified Nature and Forest Therapy Guide. She is also a Zen practitioner\, an Episcopal oblate\, and a retired education professor\, and she is certified in wilderness first aid. This event is one of our monthly forest bathing walks. Forest bathing is a practice from Japan that has been gaining attention in the West. Forest bathing is not about getting exercise. It’s not about hiking to get somewhere. It’s about being present in the forest\, taking it in. It’s about creating relationships between humans and the more-than-human world. \nRegistration is required. Often it is not for a fish.” Fennel Hudson\, Fly Fishing – Fennel’s Journal – No. 5 \nJoin us as we approach fly fishing as a contemplative practice and a way to experience renewal beyond just “getting on the water.” Western North Carolina has some of the best fly fishing on the east coast. Participants will have opportunities to fish on a private section of the Broad River. All levels of skill are welcome\, but gear\, and instruction is not provided. You must bring your own gear (rod\, reel\, North Carolina fishing license\, flies\, etc.). Participants must know how to fly fish. SUMMARY:Walnut Creek Preserve Speaker Series - Making Your Garden a True Home for Pollinators
DESCRIPTION:Date: June 24\, 2023 \nTime: 10:30 a.m. \nLocation: Anne Elizabeth Suratt Nature Center at Walnut Creek Preserve \nSpeaker: Kim Bailey\, avid wildlife habitat gardener\, environmental educator\, and owner of Milkweed Meadows Farm \n  \nExplore the life cycles and habitat needs of our native bees\, butterflies\, moths\, and hummingbirds while learning to create a garden that’s not just friendly to pollinators\, but irresistible!  Kim Bailey (AKA nectar bartender and pollinator chef at Milkweed Meadows Farm) will share secret ingredients and recipes for serving up a bountiful buffet from spring through fall. The key is not just providing nectar-producing plants to attract adult pollinators who will fly by “the bar” for a quick sip then move along. You also want to offer a kids’ menu to entice pollinators to stick around and make your garden their home. This means growing critical “baby food” plants (such as milkweed!) and flowers with “carryout pollen” to cater to picky eaters! \n**Kim will be bringing a selection of native plants to for sale following the presentation!  \nAn avid wildlife habitat gardener and environmental educator for over 25 years\, Kim Bailey has a true passion for pollinators.  In 2014\, she moved to family property in Fruitland\, NC and founded Milkweed Meadows Farm. Generations ago\, the property was a working dairy farm.  Today\, instead of producing milk\, the farm grows milkweed as well as native wildflower seeds\, open-pollinated heirloom vegetable seeds\, pollinator-friendly potted plants\, cut flowers\, and specialty fruits. Living tunnels of passionvines\, pipevines\, and climbing milkweeds benefit a diversity of butterfly species while an orchard of over 100 pawpaw trees specifically nurture zebra swallowtails. SUMMARY:Big Atlas Weekend - Bird Walk
DESCRIPTION:In support of the NC Bird Atlas citizen-science project and the Big Atlas Weekend\, Conserving Carolina’s\, Pam Torlina will be leading a bird walk in an un-adopted priority block in southeastern Henderson County. \nThe Big Atlas Weekend\, June 23-25\, is an opportunity for birders in multiple states and provinces that are running bird atlases to engage in some friendly atlasing competitions. Last year’s overall winner was Maine – with some additional effort we’re hopeful that NC can come in first this year! \nThis is a fun way for birders from across the state to document breeding birds and come together as a birding community. For many birds in our area\, breeding peaks in late June. It’s a great time to Confirm breeding and fill gaps in the Atlas dataset! \nIf you’re interested in attending and helping out\, contact Pam at pam@conservingcarolina.org.

DESCRIPTION:Join the Conserving Carolina “Kudzu Warriors” as they continue the fight against Kudzu\, a non-native and invasive vine\, at the Conserving Carolina owned Norman Wilder Forest off of Hwy 176. \nThe Kudzu Warriors\, named for their hard work eradicating Kudzu on Little Warrior Mountain\, have been defending the Conserving Carolina nature preserve from Kudzu (and other exotic species) since 2011 and have made a tremendous impact on the property. Areas that were once a mat of Kudzu vines are now lush with native vegetation! But the fight is not over\, and we need your help! \nJoin us Monday from 9:00-11:00 a.m. at the Norman Wilder Forest parking area/trailhead off of Hwy 176\, between Tryon and Saluda. GPS points (35.22458\, -82.27428) \nWe will supply tools and gloves\, but please bring water and a snack for yourself\, dress appropriately and bring your own work gloves if you’d like. \nTo RSVP or for more information email pam@conservingcarolina.org.

SUMMARY:Forest Bathing: Nature and Forest Therapy
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a session of forest bathing at Transfiguration Preserve. This walk will provide time to enjoy a 3 hour experience in the forest as we discover what the changing season invites us to explore. \nMattie is a certified Nature and Forest Therapy Guide. She is also a Zen practitioner\, an Episcopal oblate\, and a retired education professor\, and she is certified in wilderness first aid. This event is one of our monthly forest bathing walks. Forest bathing is a practice from Japan that has been gaining attention in the West. Forest bathing is not about getting exercise. It’s not about hiking to get somewhere. It’s about being present in the forest\, taking it in. It’s about creating relationships between humans and the more-than-human world. \nTo keep everyone safe\, these walks are limited to 12 participants. Registration is required. This engaging talk offers a comprehensive overview of these remarkable creatures\, exploring their unique life cycle\, habitat preferences\, and the factors contributing to their alarming decline. \nJoin us on a journey through the rivers and streams that serve as the home for these hidden gems. Discover the intricate relationship between freshwater mussels and their environment\, as we explore their vital role in maintaining water quality and stream bed stability. Gain insight into the fascinating reproductive strategies and the complex interactions that shape their existence. \nHowever\, this talk also sheds light on the challenges faced by freshwater mussels. Learn about the various factors that have led to their decline\, including habitat degradation\, pollution\, and changes in river flow patterns. Explore the interconnectedness of these factors and their impact on the delicate balance of freshwater ecosystems. \nBy the end of this talk\, you will develop a deeper appreciation for the significance of freshwater mussels and the urgent need for their conservation. Discover how researchers and conservationists are coming together to protect these imperiled species\, implementing innovative strategies to restore their habitats and raise awareness about their importance. \n  \nHans\, a freshwater mussel enthusiast\, developed a passion for these aquatic creatures during his internship with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission (NCWRC) while completing his undergraduate degree at the University of North Carolina at Asheville. He gained invaluable expertise in captive propagation techniques and identifying diverse mussel species across the aquatic habitats of Western North Carolina. \nFurthering his education at Appalachian State University\, Hans earned his master’s degree and conducted his thesis research comparing freshwater mussel taxonomic relationships using a combination of DNA analysis\, geographic range data\, and shell morphology. This academic pursuit deepened his understanding of these fascinating organisms. \nFollowing his academic journey\, Hans dedicated three years to the NCWRC\, focusing on the conservation of freshwater mussels through the preservation of both wild and captive populations.
