SUMMARY:Landrum Library Speaker Series: Fungal Foundations – How Mushrooms Build the Earth Beneath Our Feet
DESCRIPTION:Date: June 16\, 2026 \nTime: 6:00 p.m. \nLocation: Landrum Library \nSpeakers: Olga Katić \nJoin Olga\, of Mushroom Mountain\, for an engaging journey into the underground world of terrestrial fungi\, with a spotlight on Stropharia rugosoannulata—the mighty King Stropharia. Discover how mushrooms act as ecosystem engineers\, transforming woody debris and organic matter into rich\, fertile soil. This lecture explores the essential role of saprophytic fungi in building soil structure\, retaining moisture\, supporting plant life\, and even cleaning up toxins. You’ll also learn about practical applications in permaculture\, gardening\, and habitat restoration using mushrooms like King Stropharia. Whether you’re a mycophile\, a conservationist\, or just fungi-curious\, this talk will leave you seeing soil in a whole new light. \nOlga grew up mushroom hunting with her relatives in Bosnia and Hercegovina. When her parents were at work\, her grandma watched her and her sister\, and they had the freedom of being in the woods all day long. At one moment they would be digging up leeches out of the fresh water well and feeding them to chickens\, and the next moment\, they would get chased by grandma’s rooster. But they also spent a lot of time picking boletes\, milk mushrooms\, and other varieties of mushrooms. They’d bring them to their grandpa and he would get rid of the ones he thought were not edible\, the rest they would cook on the wood stove and eat! Moving to the present\, Olga is the proud owner of Mushroom Mountain and she has an amazing team working with her. They produce mushroom spawn for many different edible and medicinal varieties. They also make several different medicinal mushroom extracts and medicinal mushroom honeys under the name Mycomatrix. Mushroom Mountain also runs a Wild Mushroom Food Safety Certification Program. This program was accepted by Health Departments of 7 states\, and counting\, and also endorsed by the FDA. In her free time\, Olga loves to be in the woods\, picking mushrooms and wild plants\, and of course taking tons of pictures of anything she finds. She is fascinated by nature in every possible aspect. \n \nThe Landrum Library Speaker Series programs are made possible thanks to our partnership with the Spartanburg County Public Libraries. \nContact Pam Torlina\, pam@conservingcarolina.org\, with questions or for more information.

SUMMARY:Pollinator Paradise Partners
DESCRIPTION:Conserving Carolina is creating a pollinator garden along the scenic Oklawaha Greenway—and we need your green thumbs! No green thumb? We welcome your enthusiasm and are happy to share our knowledge with you. If you enjoy gardening (or the idea of gardening)\, and want to help create a beautiful\, welcoming space for pollinators and people alike\, come join us! \nOur vision is to grow more than just flowers—we’re building a vibrant\, family-friendly oasis that serves as a hands-on educational space. It will highlight the importance of native plants and local pollinators\, inspiring both kids and adults to connect with nature. Our plan is to utilize the gardens for community outreach programs\, workshops\, and guided tours to raise awareness about the importance of pollinators and native plant species. In one half of the large garden bed\, we plan to create an interactive garden for families with children. On future workdays we may work on the hardscape by installing paths\, borders\, and structures for climbing plants\, and other things for kids to enjoy.  We welcome your ideas and creativity! \nWhether you’re a seasoned gardener or just want to get your hands dirty for a good cause\, your help makes a difference. Come be part of something that benefits the whole community—humans\, bees\, butterflies\, and beyond! \nWe will meet at the North Main Street access to the Greenway (a gravel parking lot to the left if coming from Hwy 25 just before the bridge over Mud Creek). There will be  a Conserving Carolina sign at the entrance. \nClick here for the dropped pin. \nCome when you can\, and leave when you need to. \nFor more information\, or to sign  up\, contact Mary Miller @mary@conservingcarolina.org. \nPlease RSVP below.

SUMMARY:New Adventures\, New Moments: Bradley Preserve at Alexander's Ford
DESCRIPTION:“New Adventures\, New Moments” Spanish-English Walk\n“Nuevas Aventuras\, Nuevos Momentos” Caminata Español e Inglés\n  \nWhere/Dónde: Bradley Nature Preserve at Alexander’s Ford/Reserva Natural Bradley en Alexander’s Ford \nWhen/Cuando: July 11\,  9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m./11 de julio de 9:00 a.m. a 11:00 a.m. \nDistance and difficulty/Distancia y dificultad: 2.6 miles\, easy; trail type – loop on a wide\, even trail/2.6 millas\, fácil; tipo de sendero: circuito en un sendero ancho y uniforme \nFree/Gratis \nJoin us for a historical hike on a battle ground of the American Revolution!\nOn this hike you will be walking in the footsteps of a Patriot militia. On October 4\, 1780\, a Patriot militia of around 1\,600 soldiers arrived at the Green River. They made camp along its banks\, at a crossing that would later become known as Alexander’s Ford. Unknown to the Patriots\, it would be their final rest before fighting the Redcoats in the bloody Battle of Kings Mountain. \nFor two centuries\, the events at Alexander’s Ford were barely remembered. But now the memory of the Patriots’ long journey and their sacrifices for a new nation are memorialized at the Bradley Nature Preserve at Alexander’s Ford. Conserving Carolina helped secure three major grants to protect this historic 162-acre property in Polk County\, which is now permanently protected by a conservation easement. \nWe are fortunate to have William Caldwell\, Trail Ranger\, Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail\, National Park Service\, as our historic interpreter. He will provide a historical introduction to the Overmountain Victory Trail\, what Alexander’s Ford Trail means to us\, and how special it is to have a piece of a National Historic Trail in our community. \nThis hike is a 2.6 mile round-trip trek and at times the historic path of the Overmountain Men is visible directly next to the current trail. \n*RSVP Required Below* \nDirections will be provided after RSVP. \nFor more information or questions\, please email Sarah at sarah@conservingcarolina.org.
