DESCRIPTION:Conserving Carolina is creating a pollinator garden along the scenic Oklawaha Greenway—and we need your green thumbs! If you enjoy gardening and want to help create a beautiful\, welcoming space for pollinators and people alike\, come join us! \nOur vision is to grow more than just flowers—we’re building a vibrant\, family-friendly oasis that serves as a hands-on educational space. It will highlight the importance of native plants and local pollinators\, inspiring both kids and adults to connect with nature. Our plan is to utilize the gardens for community outreach programs\, workshops\, and guided tours to raise awareness about the importance of pollinators and native plant species. In one half of the large garden bed\, we plan to create an interactive garden for families with children. On future workdays we may work on the hardscape by installing paths\, borders\, and structures for climbing plants\, and other things for kids to enjoy.  We welcome your ideas and creativity! \nWhether you’re a seasoned gardener or just want to get your hands dirty for a good cause\, your help makes a difference. Come be part of something that benefits the whole community—humans\, bees\, butterflies\, and beyond! \nWe will meet at the North Main access to the Greenway (a gravel parking lot to the left if coming from Hwy 25) just before the bridge over Mud Creek). There will be  a Conserving Carolina sign at the entrance. \nThe best way to find the access area is to put N. Main Automotive\, Hendersonville in your GPS\, and that will get you almost there. DESCRIPTION:FENCE needs your help clearing invasive plants on the FENCE property. Join them for a fulfilling day of good work and companionship!  Wear long-sleeved shirts\, long pants\, and gloves\, and bring a pair of hand clippers if you have them. \nWorkdays are scheduled on the second Thursday of each month from 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. and will likely continue through the summer of 2026. \nVolunteers will meet at the FENCE parking lot on Hunting Country Road. For driving directions\, click here. After you turn onto the Fence property\, make a sharp right turn by the covered picnic area. Please note that while this endeavor is included on our calendar\, Conserving Carolina is not managing this activity. DESCRIPTION:Join the Conserving Carolina “Kudzu Warriors” as they continue the fight against Kudzu\, a non-native and invasive vine\, at the Conserving Carolina owned Norman Wilder Forest off of Highway 176. \nThe Kudzu Warriors\, named for their hard work eradicating Kudzu on Little Warrior Mountain\, have been defending the Conserving Carolina nature preserve from Kudzu (and other exotic species) since 2011 and have made a tremendous impact on the property. Areas that were once a mat of Kudzu vines are now lush with native vegetation! But the fight is not over\, and we need your help! \nJoin us Monday from 9:00-11:00 a.m. at the Norman Wilder Forest parking area/trailhead off of Hwy 176\, between Tryon and Saluda. SUMMARY:A Nighttime Walk to Celebrate the Winter Solstice
DESCRIPTION:Date: December 21\, 2025 \nTime: 7:00 p.m. \nLocation: DuPont State Recreational Forest\, Hooker Falls Access Area\, first/lower parking lot \nJoin us to celebrate the winter solstice – the longest night of the year – with a nighttime walk to Hooker Falls\, in DuPont State Recreational Forest. \nStarting from the lower/first parking lot\, participants will be asked to enjoy a silent walk in the darkness\, without the aid of flashlights. (Red flashlights are permitted\, but only if needed/when necessary.) The stroll will be along a one-fourth mile trail to the base of Hooker Falls. Once arriving at the falls\, in the dark of night we’ll create soft moonlight by shining (white light) flashlights upon the falls…creating a quiet moment to celebrate the return of the sun to the northern hemisphere. \nParticipants are asked to: \n\nbring (white light) flashlights to help illuminate the waterfall when we arrive\nonly us red flashlights along the trail and as needed – we’d like to invite you to use your senses and realize how well you can see and enjoy the wilderness in the dark!\nwalk in silence to the waterfall\nbring a thermos with a warm (non-alcoholic) drink to toast the sun’s return when we arrive back at the lower/first parking lot\n\nThe event will be cancelled in case of heavy rain\, snow\, or ice. Pre-registration is required\, please RSVP below.  There is no charge for this event. \nIn case of inclement weather\, the website event will be updated by 12 p.m. on the day of the walk if cancellation is necessary. \nFor your safety\, do not attempt any hike beyond your ability and experience. It will highlight the importance of native plants and local pollinators\, inspiring both kids and adults to connect with nature. Our plan is to utilize the gardens for community outreach programs\, workshops\, and guided tours to raise awareness about the importance of pollinators and native plant species. In one half of the large garden bed\, we plan to create an interactive garden for families with children. On future workdays we may work on the hardscape by installing paths\, borders\, and structures for climbing plants\, and other things for kids to enjoy.  We welcome your ideas and creativity! \nWhether you’re a seasoned gardener or just want to get your hands dirty for a good cause\, your help makes a difference. DESCRIPTION:FENCE needs your help clearing invasive plants on the FENCE property. Join them for a fulfilling day of good work and companionship!  Wear long-sleeved shirts\, long pants\, and gloves\, and bring a pair of hand clippers if you have them. \nWorkdays are scheduled on the second Thursday of each month from 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. and will likely continue through the summer of 2026. \nVolunteers will meet at the FENCE parking lot on Hunting Country Road. For driving directions\, click here. After you turn onto the Fence property\, make a sharp right turn by the covered picnic area. Please note that while this endeavor is included on our calendar\, Conserving Carolina is not managing this activity. DESCRIPTION:Native Plant Gardening Volunteer Team! \nDo you have an interest in native plants?  Join us Thursdays from 1pm –  3pm at Ironwood Square\, 847 Case Street in Hendersonville\, home of the Conserving Carolina office.  Over two acres has been planted with an amazing collection of native flowers\, shrubs\, trees\, and bog plants.  Volunteers are needed to maintain the extensive garden for community use and educational programming. \nNo experience needed\, but please bring gloves and gardening tools! \nPlease note that hours will change seasonally.  Starting May 1st we will work from 9am- 11 pm every Thursday.  As the weather gets cooler we’ll work from 1:00 – 3:00pm every other week.  The website calendar will reflect these changes. \nFor more information or to sign up contact mary@conservingcarolina.org.

DESCRIPTION:Date: January 13\, 2026 \nTime: 2:00 p.m. \nLocation: Polk County Public Libraries\, Saluda Branch \nSpeaker: Alan Cameron \n\nAlan will discusses the 18 non-venomous and two venomous species of snakes that inhabit Polk and Henderson Counties.  This includes some aspects of their life history\, reproduction\, dealing with problem snakes\, the danger of venomous snake bites and treating such bites for both humans and pets.  \nAlan Cameron has been a volunteer with the NC Wildlife Resources Commission for the last 20 years.  His primary interest is in the rare and endangered Green Salamander but he also works on numerous other listed animal species including several kinds of snakes.   \n \nThe Saluda Library Speaker Series programs are made possible thanks to our partnership with the Polk County Public Libraries Systems. \nContact Pam Torlina\, pam@conservingcarolina.org\, with questions or for more information.

DESCRIPTION:Join the Conserving Carolina “Kudzu Warriors” as they continue the fight against Kudzu\, a non-native and invasive vine\, at the Conserving Carolina owned Norman Wilder Forest off of Highway 176. \nThe Kudzu Warriors\, named for their hard work eradicating Kudzu on Little Warrior Mountain\, have been defending the Conserving Carolina nature preserve from Kudzu (and other exotic species) since 2011 and have made a tremendous impact on the property. Areas that were once a mat of Kudzu vines are now lush with native vegetation! But the fight is not over\, and we need your help! \nJoin us Monday from 9:00-11:00 a.m. at the Norman Wilder Forest parking area/trailhead off of Hwy 176\, between Tryon and Saluda. Are you tired of mowing grass? The advantages of mosses as intentional horticultural choices in today’s landscapes will be the focus of Mossin’ Annie’s lecture. A PowerPoint presentation will feature impressive photos about the joys and environmental benefits of mosses (bryophytes). An exhibit of moss species will be displayed for patrons to touch and take a closer look at their unique botanical features. \nWNC native and internationally-recognized expert on moss gardening\, Annie Martin\, known as Mossin’ Annie\, infuses her passion for mosses with her knowledge of bryophytes and successful gardening techniques. Wearing many hats\, Mossin’ Annie is a moss rescuer\, farmer\, researcher\, landscape designer\, field guide\, garden speaker and published author of The Magical World of Moss Gardening (Timber Press\, 2015; Japanese translation\, 2017). \nAs owner of Mountain Moss Enterprises and licensed NC Landscape Contractor\, she offers consultation services\, garden designs and turnkey installations emphasizing the year-round green appeal of eco-friendly mosses.
