DESCRIPTION:Workday Description:\nVolunteers will be removing various non-native invasive species\, such as Kudzu\, Tree of Heaven\, Butterfly Bush\, and others from the grounds. Volunteers will be using pruners\, handsaws\, and pulling methods to remove invasive plant species. \nVolunteers must be able to walk a short distance on level ground. Tools and gloves will be provided. Plant ID and removal techniques will be taught on-site. DESCRIPTION:Join the Conserving Carolina “Kudzu Warriors” as they continue the fight against Kudzu\, a non-native and invasive vine\, at the Conserving Carolina owned Norman Wilder Forest off of Hwy 176. \nThe Kudzu Warriors\, named for their hard work eradicating Kudzu on Little Warrior Mountain\, have been defending the Conserving Carolina nature preserve from Kudzu (and other exotic species) since 2011 and have made a tremendous impact on the property. Areas that were once a mat of Kudzu vines are now lush with native vegetation! But the fight is not over\, and we need your help! \nJoin us Monday from 9:00-11:00 a.m. at the Norman Wilder Forest parking area/trailhead off of Hwy 176\, between Tryon and Saluda. SUMMARY:Saluda Library Speaker Series: Moths and Why We Need to Think About Them Differently
DESCRIPTION:Rosy Maple Moth by Sharon Mammoser \nDate: September 10\, 2024 \nTime: 2:00 p.m. \nLocation: Polk County Public Libraries\, Saluda Branch \nSpeaker: Sharon Mammoser\, naturalist\, photographer\, and writer \nWhen many people think about moths\, they probably don’t consider them beautiful\, very diverse\,  or worthy of protecting. But guess what? Moths outnumber butterflies TEN to one! Worldwide there are more than 160\,000 species of moths and about 17\,500 of butterflies. Moths and their caterpillars are the foundation of the food chain\, especially appealing to songbird parents who must feed their growing chicks. The diversity is shocking\, as are the colors\, shapes and adaptations. There are moths with fake eyes\, moths with perfect camouflage hiding secret colors\, moths that mimic other insects\, moths with long tails meant to outsmart bats\, moths that sleep in flowers\, moths with long proboscises that can reach deep into the nectary of flowers\, and moths with antennae so perfect you’d swear they were feathers. There are yellow and pink moths\, delicate green moths\, and moths with intricate designs that look hand-painted. \nIn this program we get an introduction to the amazing world of moths\, including a chance to see and learn about some of our more amazing local moths. We’ll also learn about their important place in the food web and how we can make our yards and outdoor spaces more moth friendly. \nNature is what nourishes Sharon’s soul and makes her heart sing with joy. After a childhood full of time spent exploring the wild lands around her home in western New York state\, she went on to earn her Bachelor of Science degree from SUNY at New Paltz. For many years\, Sharon shared nature with people of all ages in Minnesota\, Michigan\, Rhode Island\, Colorado\, and New York. In 2008\, she thru-hiked the 2175 mile Appalachian Trail\, an event that prompted her to move to western North Carolina\, which she now calls home. These days\, Sharon is focused on educating people about the plants and animals in their yards and how they can make their outdoor spaces more welcoming and beneficial to wildlife large and small. \n \nThe Saluda Library Speaker Series programs are made possible thanks to our partnership with the Polk County Public Libraries Systems and a grant from the Polk County Community Foundation. \nContact Pam Torlina\, pam@conservingcarolina.org\, with questions or for more information.

Kiersten is an ANFT-Certified Forest Therapy Guide and a Yoga Teacher certified in both Vinyasa yoga (200RYT) and Ayuryoga (500RYT).  She moved here from Albuquerque\, New Mexico where she was certified as an Ayurvedic Practitioner with The Ayurvedic Institute. With all of her training\, she helps guide others to live life harmoniously by incorporating wellness and holistic teachings. This program will be rescheduled for May 2025! \nDate: September 19\, 2024 \nTime: 6:00 p.m. \nSpeaker: Brad Nelson \nThis program will be great for all ages and introduce basic information about butterflies and some of the species common in our area with a focus on the Monarch butterfly. Keeping it fun and entertaining\, Brad will discuss the Monarchs life cycle\, different types of milkweed common in our area\, and which milkweeds are more likely to attract Monarchs. He will also provide gardening techniques that will help attract Monarchs\, describing specific types of plants that are best for the enticing them and which are better to help perpetuate the species. The presentation will also include explanation of migration routes and when to expect Monarchs in this area. This is sure to be a great program for the whole family\, so bring the kids! \nBrad has been involved with Monarch Watch\, the University of Kansas tagging program\, for the last 5 years. DESCRIPTION:Date: September 21\, 2024 \nTime: 10:30 a.m. \nLocation: Anne Elizabeth Suratt Nature Center at Walnut Creek Preserve \nSpeaker: Tom Tribble\, Past President of the Blue Ridge Audubon Chapter and current At-Large Director of Blue Ridge Audubon Chapter \nFor over 100 years\, Audubon had focused on making the world a better place for birds. In 2014\, National Audubon released a Birds and Climate Change Report. The report established that shrinking and shifting ranges due to the changing climate could imperil more than half of the 588 species of North America breeding birds involved in the study – within this century. This seven-year science investigation\, made possible by decades of community-science data\, sounded an alarm that made news around the world. In early October of 2019\, National Audubon released a follow-up report – Survival By Degrees – that paints an even more challenging situation for birds if the world does not take action to reduce global warming. This presentation will summarize the results of this study and discuss actions that individuals can take to help birds. \nTom Tribble served six years as President and is now an At-Large Director of Blue Ridge Audubon Chapter\, which covers Buncombe\, Henderson\, Madison and several adjacent counties in western North Carolina. Tom has been an Audubon member and avid birder for more than 45 years. She is also a Zen practitioner\, an Episcopal oblate\, and a retired education professor\, and she is certified in wilderness first aid. This event is one of our monthly forest bathing walks. Forest bathing is a practice from Japan that has been gaining attention in the West. Forest bathing is not about getting exercise. It’s not about hiking to get somewhere. It’s about being present in the forest\, taking it in. It’s about creating relationships between humans and the more-than-human world. \nMany have asked if Mattie would consider “Writing in Nature”! Her creative instructions will be a perfect match for Bearwallow Mountain. \nPre-registration is required\, and space is limited to 12 participants. DESCRIPTION:When: September 24\,  1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. \nOptional: Hike up Bearwallow Mountain\, 3:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. \nMeet: Fruitland Baptist Bible College\n\nWe will clean up litter along our Adopt-a-Highway section on South Mills Gap Road from 1PM – 3PM. Tools\, safety vests\, and gloves will be provided. We will meet at the Fruitland Baptist Bible College.\n\nAfterwards\, please join us for a hike up Bearwallow Mountain (optional; 3 PM – 4:30 PM). SUMMARY:Fall Hiking Series: Daniel Ridge loop\, Pisgah National Forest
DESCRIPTION:Where: Daniel Ridge loop\, Pisgah National Forest \nMeet: Ironwood Square\, Conserving Carolina’s office\, 847 Case Street\, Hendersonville\, NC\, at 8:30 a.m. \nDistance and difficulty: 4.5 miles\, moderate; trail type – loop \nElevation gain: 813′ \nApproximately 50 minute drive \nHikers will head to Pisgah National Forest\, just past the old Pisgah Center for Wildlife Education and Fish Hatchery. The Daniel Ridge Trail begins by following the Davidson River\, then the trail leaves the river and follows Lanning Branch and ascends the ridge.  The reward for this ascent is beautiful views of Pilot Mountain.  After descending the opposite side of the ridge\, hikers will be led to the base of a 90-foot waterfall\, Toms Spring Falls. \n*Space is limited and pre-registration is required\, and space is limited to 20 participants. Registration\, by RSVP below\, opens at 9:00 am Friday\, September 6\, 2024.   \nContact pam@conservingcarolina.org with additional questions. \nConserving Carolina is sponsoring a Friday hiking series this fall that is free\, guided\, and open to the public. The hikes will meet at Ironwood Plaza (Conserving Carolina’s office) and will leave promptly at 8:45 a.m. Hikers should plan to return to the area in the late afternoon\, time varying with group size\, distance of hike\, and drive time. Car-pooling will be organized at the meeting location. If you’re coming from an area closer to the trailhead\, please contact Pam Torlina (email above) to make other meeting arrangements. \nBe sure to wear appropriate clothing and sturdy footwear. Bring a bag lunch and/or snack and plenty of water for yourself. \nIn case of inclement weather\, please contact Pam Torlina by email at: pam@conservingcarolina.org by 8:00 a.m. on the day of the hike and/or check the Conserving Carolina website ‘calendar’ to see if the hike will take place. Please also remember to bring any medication that you may need in the event of an emergency (ie: epinephrine\, nitroglycerine\, insulin\, etc.). Hike leaders will carry a first aid kit; however\, it may not contain specific medication for your individual needs. \nBefore each hike\, you will be asked to sign a waiver form. DESCRIPTION:Date: September 27\, 2024 \nTime: 1:00 p.m. \nLocation: Etowah Library \nSpeaker: Steve O’Neil\, executive director of Earthshine Nature Programs \nJoin us for an up-close and personal introduction to some of the most important and yet most misunderstood wild creatures – the reptiles that live in our backyards – and maybe even in our basements and attics!  This program will focus on many of the more misunderstood animals we share our world with. These animals are integral parts of a healthy ecosystem\, healthy earth\, and healthy humans\, yet they have been misunderstood and mistreated by many for centuries. It’s time to end the misunderstandings and build some respect for our wild friends. \n\nThis program will include LIVE ANIMALS and will be perfect for all ages!  So\, come out and bring the kids\, to meet Steve and his friends and learn some amazing secrets of our less than cuddly wild neighbors.\n\n\nSteve is from Hendersonville\, North Carolina and has worked as an interpretive naturalist for many years and with many organizations. He is the Executive Director of Earthshine Nature Programs. DESCRIPTION:Join the Conserving Carolina “Kudzu Warriors” as they continue the fight against Kudzu\, a non-native and invasive vine\, at the Conserving Carolina owned Norman Wilder Forest off of Hwy 176. \nThe Kudzu Warriors\, named for their hard work eradicating Kudzu on Little Warrior Mountain\, have been defending the Conserving Carolina nature preserve from Kudzu (and other exotic species) since 2011 and have made a tremendous impact on the property. Areas that were once a mat of Kudzu vines are now lush with native vegetation! But the fight is not over\, and we need your help! \nJoin us Monday from 9:00-11:00 a.m. at the Norman Wilder Forest parking area/trailhead off of Hwy 176\, between Tryon and Saluda.
