SUMMARY:Guided Nature Walk - Looking for Mushrooms!
DESCRIPTION:Join Conserving Carolina for an interpretive nature walk to look for mushrooms with Charlotte Caplan!\n  \nThe event will take place along the Green River in Mills Spring\, NC\, below the Lake Adger dam on Saturday\, August 12th from 10:00-11:30 a.m. In order to make this an enjoyable and educational experience for participants\, space is limited to 20 and pre-registration is required. \nCharlotte Caplan has been collecting\, studying\, identifying\, and eating fungi for over 40 years\, in both Europe and North America.  She started learning about mushrooms in Britain in 1975\, and she was mainly self-taught because the British have no tradition of collecting wild mushrooms and there are very few clubs available.  Upon moving to the USA\, to Savannah\, GA\, in 1986 there still seemed to be no one else interested in fungi.  But then\, after moving to Asheville in 1998\, it was like moving to the mushroom capital of the world!  There were not only huge varieties of fungi to be found\, but also an active mushroom club! \nMs. Caplan is the past president of the Asheville Mushroom Club and she has presented to many mushroom clubs\, led numerous field trips\, and has been an instructor for the NC Arboretum’s Blue Ridge Naturalist certification program. \nFor your safety\, do not attempt this activity if it is beyond your ability and experience. Participants should wear appropriate clothing and footwear and bring a snack\, water\, and any personal medication that may be required. A loop/hand lens may be helpful\, if you have one to bring! \nIn case of inclement weather\, please contact Pam Torlina by e-mail\, pam@conservingcarolina.org\, by 8 a.m. on the day of the walk and/or check the Conserving Carolina website or Facebook page to see if the walk will take place. \nSpace is limited. All tools and gloves will be provided. Plant ID and removal techniques will be taught on-site. SUMMARY:Forest Bathing: Nature and Forest Therapy
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a session of forest bathing at Transfiguration Preserve. This walk will provide time to enjoy a 3 hour experience in the forest as we discover what the changing season invites us to explore. \nMattie is a certified Nature and Forest Therapy Guide. She is also a Zen practitioner\, an Episcopal oblate\, and a retired education professor\, and she is certified in wilderness first aid. This event is one of our monthly forest bathing walks. Forest bathing is a practice from Japan that has been gaining attention in the West. Forest bathing is not about getting exercise. It’s not about hiking to get somewhere. It’s about being present in the forest\, taking it in. It’s about creating relationships between humans and the more-than-human world. \nTo keep everyone safe\, these walks are limited to 12 participants. Registration is required. SUMMARY:Guided Bird Walk along the Green River!
DESCRIPTION:Date: July 22\, 2023 \nTime: 8:00 a.m. \nLocation: Swiftwater Farm \nGuide: Clifton Avery of Ventures Birding Tours \n  \nJoin us for an easy 2-hour guided bird walk in search of residents and Neotropical migrants that visited the region to raise their young. We will be exploring open grassy fields\, brush\, and edges along the Green River where we will have the opportunity to see and hear a large diversity of species. Highlights along the river should include Louisiana Waterthrush and Yellow-throated Warbler. \n  \nClifton was born and raised in the foothills of western North Carolina. He has always had a passion for nature and the outdoors but did not discover his love for birds until he saw a Painted Bunting off the coast of North Carolina on an early summer morning. Soon after this eye-opening experience\, Clifton had the opportunity to participate in a National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) course in Brazil where he was overwhelmed by the beauty and diversity of the birds of the Amazon Rainforest. Following this experience\, Clifton went to Appalachian State University where he majored in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology with a focus in Ornithology. \nClifton worked for various ornithological research projects after college where he banded and nest searched for a wide range of avian species in Peru\, Colombia\, and Nicaragua. He also worked a couple seasons for the NC Audubon Society studying the Golden-winged Warbler on its breeding grounds in northwestern NC. For the past 5 years Clifton has worked for the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission as the Mountain Wildlife Diversity Technician. His duties include conducting surveying\, monitoring\, habitat management\, and public outreach for wildlife conservation projects focusing on species of greatest conservation need that occur in western North Carolina. He mostly focuses on birds\, flying squirrels\, and Hellbender salamanders. He currently lives in Asheville\, NC and is the father of a 4-year old boy. He does not have any inside pets but the bears and turkeys that pass through his yard regularly suffice. \n  \nFor your safety\, do not attempt this activity if it is beyond your ability and experience. Forest bathing is a practice from Japan that has been gaining attention in the West. Forest bathing is not about getting exercise. It’s not about hiking to get somewhere. It’s about creating relationships between humans and the more-than-human world. \n  \nDr. Mattie Decker’s friend Kiersten Angelos will begin a monthly offering here of Nature and Yoga! Kiersten is an ANFT-Certified Forest Therapy Guide and a Yoga Teacher certified in both Vinyasa yoga (200RYT) and Ayuryoga (500RYT).  She moved here from Albuquerque\, New Mexico where she was certified as an Ayurvedic Practitioner with The Ayurvedic Institute. DESCRIPTION:Background Info:\nPleasant Grove is a property owned by Conserving Carolina as of August 2017. It consists of around 110 acres of floodplain and was a dairy farm in its former life\, beginning in the early 1920s. In the mid-2000s\, the property was graded and slated to become a residential development known as Seven Falls. That development fell through. Now that Conserving Carolina owns the property\, removing non-native invasive species is a priority for increasing the conservation values of the property. Some of the non-native invasive species noted on the property are Japanese honeysuckle\, multiflora rose\, Japanese knotweed\, Chinese silvergrass\, autumn olive\, and privet. \nWorkday Description:\nVolunteers will be removing various non-native invasive species\, such as Chinese privet\, Japanese honeysuckle\, and multiflora rose from the property. Using only mechanical techniques\, volunteers will be using pruners\, handsaws\, and pulling to remove invasive plant species. \nVolunteers must be able to walk moderate distances across rough terrain. Tools and gloves will be provided; all materials are sanitized before and after each workday. Plant ID and removal techniques will be taught on-site. Join us as we discover the “little armored one.” \nTim is native South Carolinian and he has studied and taught as a naturalist and biologist throughout the southeast for more than 30 years. For the past 21 years he has been the Interpretive Ranger and Naturalist for South Carolina State Park Service’s Mountain Bridge Wilderness Area (Jones Gap and Caesar’s Head SPs) where he conducts research and provides educational programs for children and adults. He will teach us how to carefully gather and preserve these natural artifacts and to use skulls found on a trail or in the woods as a clue to the life and likely causes of death of the creature whose skull we find. Cooperative Extension\, Transylvania County Center and Conserving Carolina are offering a series of lectures\, field trips\, and service days to better acquaint the public with the French Broad River\, considered one of the oldest rivers in the world\, and give you ways to explore and act on its behalf. \nThe series is divided into 5 topics – March – June; each topic will have lecture (LEARN)\, field trip (EXPLORE)\, and service day (ACT) components. Lectures will be presented by local experts\, authors\, and scientists. Field trips will highlight the topics introduced by the speakers\, and service days will act upon those topics. \nThe fifth part of our series: ACT Participate in a workday maintaining a French Broad River campsite! \n Banks of the French Broad River at Mud Creek This service day with Mountain True will take place on one of the many riverside campsites on the French Broad River. We will work on repairing/replacing campsite equipment\, picking up litter\, and/or removing invasive plants in the peripheral areas. \nRegistration is required and space is limited\, reserve your spot here. DESCRIPTION:Join the Conserving Carolina “Kudzu Warriors” as they continue the fight against Kudzu\, a non-native and invasive vine\, at the Conserving Carolina owned Norman Wilder Forest off of Hwy 176. \nThe Kudzu Warriors\, named for their hard work eradicating Kudzu on Little Warrior Mountain\, have been defending the Conserving Carolina nature preserve from Kudzu (and other exotic species) since 2011 and have made a tremendous impact on the property. Areas that were once a mat of Kudzu vines are now lush with native vegetation! But the fight is not over\, and we need your help! \nJoin us Monday from 9:00-11:00 a.m. at the Norman Wilder Forest parking area/trailhead off of Hwy 176\, between Tryon and Saluda. GPS points (35.22458\, -82.27428) \nWe will supply tools and gloves\, but please bring water and a snack for yourself\, dress appropriately and bring your own work gloves if you’d like. \nTo RSVP or for more information email pam@conservingcarolina.org.
