By spending countless hours teaching on our local waterways\, Jordan has developed a deep reverence not only for those watersheds but the people of the Southern Appalachians who rely on them. DESCRIPTION:Join us as we celebrate 10 years of BioBlitzing! Help Conserving Carolina\, MountainTrue\, and a cadre of expert naturalists as we explore Conserving Carolina preserves and seek to catalogue all of the lifeforms we encounter. \nCitizen scientists will have the chance to learn from experts in plants\, mushrooms\, reptiles\, amphibians\, mosses\, and more while enjoying one of the most beautiful landscapes in the region. \nFollowing the BioBlitz\, there will be food and refreshments provided and time for participants to share their findings and experiences. \nImportant Reminders:\nThere will be a variety of hike options for this event ranging from easy to strenuous. Please leave pets at home. DESCRIPTION:Join the Conserving Carolina “Kudzu Warriors” as they continue the fight against Kudzu\, a non-native and invasive vine\, at the Conserving Carolina owned Norman Wilder Forest off of Highway 176. \nThe Kudzu Warriors\, named for their hard work eradicating Kudzu on Little Warrior Mountain\, have been defending the Conserving Carolina nature preserve from Kudzu (and other exotic species) since 2011 and have made a tremendous impact on the property. Areas that were once a mat of Kudzu vines are now lush with native vegetation! But the fight is not over\, and we need your help! \nJoin us Monday from 8:30-10:30 a.m. at the Norman Wilder Forest parking area/trailhead off of Hwy 176\, between Tryon and Saluda. If you enjoy gardening (or the idea of gardening)\, and want to help create a beautiful\, welcoming space for pollinators and people alike\, come join us! \nOur vision is to grow more than just flowers—we’re building a vibrant\, family-friendly oasis that serves as a hands-on educational space. It will highlight the importance of native plants and local pollinators\, inspiring both kids and adults to connect with nature. Our plan is to utilize the gardens for community outreach programs\, workshops\, and guided tours to raise awareness about the importance of pollinators and native plant species. In one half of the large garden bed\, we plan to create an interactive garden for families with children. On future workdays we may work on the hardscape by installing paths\, borders\, and structures for climbing plants\, and other things for kids to enjoy.  We welcome your ideas and creativity! \nWhether you’re a seasoned gardener or just want to get your hands dirty for a good cause\, your help makes a difference. DESCRIPTION:Date: June 16\, 2026 \nTime: 6:00 p.m. \nLocation: Landrum Library \nSpeakers: Olga Katić \nJoin Olga\, of Mushroom Mountain\, for an engaging journey into the underground world of terrestrial fungi\, with a spotlight on Stropharia rugosoannulata—the mighty King Stropharia. Discover how mushrooms act as ecosystem engineers\, transforming woody debris and organic matter into rich\, fertile soil. This lecture explores the essential role of saprophytic fungi in building soil structure\, retaining moisture\, supporting plant life\, and even cleaning up toxins. You’ll also learn about practical applications in permaculture\, gardening\, and habitat restoration using mushrooms like King Stropharia. Whether you’re a mycophile\, a conservationist\, or just fungi-curious\, this talk will leave you seeing soil in a whole new light. \nOlga grew up mushroom hunting with her relatives in Bosnia and Hercegovina. When her parents were at work\, her grandma watched her and her sister\, and they had the freedom of being in the woods all day long. At one moment they would be digging up leeches out of the fresh water well and feeding them to chickens\, and the next moment\, they would get chased by grandma’s rooster. But they also spent a lot of time picking boletes\, milk mushrooms\, and other varieties of mushrooms. They’d bring them to their grandpa and he would get rid of the ones he thought were not edible\, the rest they would cook on the wood stove and eat! Moving to the present\, Olga is the proud owner of Mushroom Mountain and she has an amazing team working with her. They produce mushroom spawn for many different edible and medicinal varieties. They also make several different medicinal mushroom extracts and medicinal mushroom honeys under the name Mycomatrix. Mushroom Mountain also runs a Wild Mushroom Food Safety Certification Program. This program was accepted by Health Departments of 7 states\, and counting\, and also endorsed by the FDA. In her free time\, Olga loves to be in the woods\, picking mushrooms and wild plants\, and of course taking tons of pictures of anything she finds. You will be working with Conserving Carolina Habitat Restoration staff in a caring environment focused on safety and wellness\, learning and camaraderie\, on the land. Volunteers will not be asked to handle any chemicals or herbicides or to operate any fossil fuel-powered equipment. \nWhere and When\n\nWeekly\, rain\, or shine\, with exceptions for extreme weather\nAll workdays will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with a well-earned break in between\nFeel free to choose specific days or pledge yourself to a steady regime as best suits you.\n\n\n\n\nFirst Wednesday: Pleasant Grove – Etowah\, Henderson County\nSecond Wednesday: Mouth of Mud Creek – Mills River/Arden\, Henderson County\nThird Wednesday: Florence Nature Preserve – Gerton\, Henderson/Buncombe Counties\nFourth Wednesday: Land Manager’s choice of Preserve\, location – to be published in each month’s volunteer newsletter and online calendar. This will be a chance to see some neat corners of the world\, with exclusive access. DESCRIPTION:Native Plant Garden Volunteer Team! \nDo you have an interest in native plants and gardening?  Join us Thursdays from 9 am –  11am at Ironwood Square\, 847 Case Street in Hendersonville\, home of the Conserving Carolina office.  Over two acres has been planted with an amazing collection of native flowers\, shrubs\, trees\, and bog plants.  Volunteers are needed to maintain the extensive garden for community use and educational programming. \nNo experience needed\, but please bring gloves and gardening tools! \nPlease note that hours will change seasonally.  Starting May 1st we will work from 9am- 11 pm every Thursday.  As the weather gets cooler in October we’ll work from 1:00 – 3:00pm every other week.  The website calendar will reflect these changes. \nFor more information or to sign up contact mary@conservingcarolina.org.

Prior to his career as a Ranger\, he was a police officer at the Forest City Police Department\, and he was the Chief of Police for the Town of Spindale. Eric has a degree from Western Piedmont Community College and Lees McRae College in Criminal Justice\, and he’s completed his master’s degree in public administration through Appalachian State University. \nAlthough his background is mostly law enforcement related\, he has always enjoyed anything outdoors. SUMMARY:Green River Library Speaker Series: Southern Appalachians During the Ice Age
DESCRIPTION:Date: June 25\, 2026 \nTime: 2:00 p.m. \nLocation: Green River Library \nSpeaker: Dan Lazar\, naturalist and educator \nDuring the presentation\, Dan Lazar will discuss the animals and plants that were found in this region twenty thousand years ago.  He will also present evidence suggesting the former occurrence of now-extinct species such as Jefferson’s Ground Sloth and the American Mastodon.  The presentation will show images depicting ice age species still surviving in our Southern Mountains. \nDan Lazar served for many years as Director of Education at the Western North Carolina Nature Center\, followed by several years as Executive Director of the Colburn Earth Science Museum.  Mr. Lazar has a degree in Forest Biology from the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry at Syracuse.  He has been an instructor in the Blue Ridge Naturalist Certificate Program at the North Carolina Arboretum since 2005\, teaching a variety of classes including Ecology of the Blue Ridge Mountains\, Geology of the Blue Ridge Mountains\, Introduction to Insects\, Tree Identification\, and Meteorology.  Dan also has co-hosted “Nature News\,” a weekly radio program broadcast on WTZQ Hendersonville\, since 1993. \nThis program is part of the library’s summer reading program! \n*Space is limited and pre-registration is required by visiting the Green River Library’s calendar of events at this link.  \n \nThe Green River Library Speaker Series programs are made possible thanks to our partnership with the Henderson County Public Library. \nContact Pam Torlina\, pam@conservingcarolina.org\, with questions or for more information.

This final guided walk invites you onto a protected property conserved through a Conserving Carolina conservation easement\, offering a rare\, behind-the-scenes look at how healthy floodplains are restored and why they matter. \nThis final walk is about one hour and takes place at the final stage of the project: \n\nWalk Three\, June 27: After Completion – Return to witness the finished restoration and discuss how the floodplain will continue to heal and function over time.\n\nWhether you’ve joined us for one walk or all three\, this series offers a unique opportunity to walk the land\, learn from the process\, and connect with the story of restoration in real time. \n*Space is limited and pre-registration is required\, and space is limited to 30 participants. DESCRIPTION:Native Plant Garden Volunteer Team! \nDo you have an interest in native plants and gardening?  Join us Thursdays from 9 am –  11am at Ironwood Square\, 847 Case Street in Hendersonville\, home of the Conserving Carolina office.  Over two acres has been planted with an amazing collection of native flowers\, shrubs\, trees\, and bog plants.  Volunteers are needed to maintain the extensive garden for community use and educational programming. \nNo experience needed\, but please bring gloves and gardening tools! \nPlease note that hours will change seasonally.  Starting May 1st we will work from 9am- 11 pm every Thursday.  As the weather gets cooler in October we’ll work from 1:00 – 3:00pm every other week.  The website calendar will reflect these changes. \nFor more information or to sign up contact mary@conservingcarolina.org.

DESCRIPTION:Join the Conserving Carolina “Kudzu Warriors” as they continue the fight against Kudzu\, a non-native and invasive vine\, at the Conserving Carolina owned Norman Wilder Forest off of Highway 176. \nThe Kudzu Warriors\, named for their hard work eradicating Kudzu on Little Warrior Mountain\, have been defending the Conserving Carolina nature preserve from Kudzu (and other exotic species) since 2011 and have made a tremendous impact on the property. Areas that were once a mat of Kudzu vines are now lush with native vegetation! But the fight is not over\, and we need your help! \nJoin us Monday from 8:30-10:30 a.m. at the Norman Wilder Forest parking area/trailhead off of Hwy 176\, between Tryon and Saluda. DESCRIPTION:Conserving Carolina is creating a pollinator garden along the scenic Oklawaha Greenway—and we need your green thumbs! No green thumb? We welcome your enthusiasm and are happy to share our knowledge with you. If you enjoy gardening (or the idea of gardening)\, and want to help create a beautiful\, welcoming space for pollinators and people alike\, come join us! \nOur vision is to grow more than just flowers—we’re building a vibrant\, family-friendly oasis that serves as a hands-on educational space. It will highlight the importance of native plants and local pollinators\, inspiring both kids and adults to connect with nature. Our plan is to utilize the gardens for community outreach programs\, workshops\, and guided tours to raise awareness about the importance of pollinators and native plant species. In one half of the large garden bed\, we plan to create an interactive garden for families with children. On future workdays we may work on the hardscape by installing paths\, borders\, and structures for climbing plants\, and other things for kids to enjoy.  We welcome your ideas and creativity! \nWhether you’re a seasoned gardener or just want to get your hands dirty for a good cause\, your help makes a difference. Come be part of something that benefits the whole community—humans\, bees\, butterflies\, and beyond! \nWe will meet at the North Main Street access to the Greenway (a gravel parking lot to the left if coming from Hwy 25 just before the bridge over Mud Creek). DESCRIPTION:Nature Preserve Stewards\nJoin us for our weekly Nature Preserve Stewards workday. You will be working with Conserving Carolina Habitat Restoration staff in a caring environment focused on safety and wellness\, learning and camaraderie\, on the land. Volunteers will not be asked to handle any chemicals or herbicides or to operate any fossil fuel-powered equipment. \nWhere and When\n\nWeekly\, rain\, or shine\, with exceptions for extreme weather\nAll workdays will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with a well-earned break in between\nFeel free to choose specific days or pledge yourself to a steady regime as best suits you.\n\n\n\n\nFirst Wednesday: Pleasant Grove – Etowah\, Henderson County\nSecond Wednesday: Mouth of Mud Creek – Mills River/Arden\, Henderson County\nThird Wednesday: Florence Nature Preserve – Gerton\, Henderson/Buncombe Counties\nFourth Wednesday: Land Manager’s choice of Preserve\, location – to be published in each month’s volunteer newsletter and online calendar. This will be a chance to see some neat corners of the world\, with exclusive access. An email with details of the workday\, including meeting place\, will be sent to all who have registered by Friday of the preceding week.\n\n\n\nWhat to expect:\nA typical day might include: \n\nPulling weeds\nErosion control\nPlanting and tending trees and other plants\nMaking and recording scientific observations\nCreating habitat for all kinds of animals\nMaintaining artificial habitats (bird and bat boxes\, etc.)\nOther tasks as conditions warrant.\n\nWhat to Bring:\n\nAppropriate clothing for four hours in nature: close-toed shoes\, long pants\, and shirt sleeves. SUMMARY:Foothills Equestrian Nature Center (FENCE) Invasive Plant Management
DESCRIPTION:FENCE needs your help clearing invasive plants on the FENCE property. Join them for a fulfilling day of good work and companionship!  Wear long-sleeved shirts\, long pants\, and gloves\, and bring a pair of hand clippers if you have them. \nWorkdays are scheduled on the second Thursday of each month from 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. and will likely continue through the summer of 2026. \nVolunteers will meet at the FENCE parking lot on Hunting Country Road. For driving directions\, click here. After you turn onto the Fence property\, make a sharp right turn by the covered picnic area. Please note that while this endeavor is included on our calendar\, Conserving Carolina is not managing this activity. SUMMARY:Green Drinks: We Don't Need a Strategic Reserve of Sunlight
DESCRIPTION:Land of Sky Regional Council has partnered with Footprint Project in the immediate aftermath of Helene to deploy solar microgrids across WNC. This presentation will cover the work of these organizations and partners throughout disaster response and into recovery\, including the types of tech deployed\, the folks that it helped\, and how this partnership has turned into a much larger energy resilience recovery project with funding from NCDEQ.  The presenter tends to be more technical than programmatic\, so bring your questions of all sorts and we will see if we can get them all answered! \nIan Baillie is a Regional Planner at Land of Sky Regional Council\, where he works within the Economic and Community Development department\, specializing in Energy Security and Efficient Transportation Systems\, including alternative and renewable fuels.  He has roughly three decades of experience in the automotive industry and having grown up in the woods of WNC\, has always been an environmentalist.  Ian found his passion for educating in his 30s as a founding member of the nonprofit Asheville Makers\, leading him into work at Warren Wilson College and then Land of Sky Regional Council\, where he leads outreach efforts for multiple programs. \n  \n5:30 p.m.: Grab and drink and network with like-minded locals.\n6:00 p.m.: Enjoy the presentation and learn something new!\n  \nHendersonville Green Drinks is presented by Conserving Carolina\, MountainTrue and The Local Table curated by Stump Farms. Come to Green Drinks to learn more about current environmental issues\, have relevant discussions\, and meet with like-minded people. This is a monthly event and everyone is welcome. You don’t have to drink at Green Drinks\, just come and listen. The Local Table offers beer\, wine\, and non-alcoholic beverages.
