DESCRIPTION:Background Info: \nThis year\, we will be partnering with the Town of Columbus again in celebrating “Columbus Proud” Litter Awareness Month – April 2025. \nEvery day\, excessive waste and single-use products pollute our land and water. Litter will always be a problem if we do not tackle it at the source. \nTo be part of the solution:\n1. REFUSE to use plastic single-use items\, such as plastic grocery bags\, plastic tableware and plastic cups\n2. REDUCE the amount of plastic and other waste you use by Bringing Your Own: water bottle\, coffee mug\, bag\, etc\n3. RECYCLE (correctly) as much as possible\n4. BUY products with little or no plastic packaging\, and products made from recycled materials\n5. DISPOSE of your waste properly\, and secure your loads\n6. KEEP storm drains clean\n7. SPREAD the word! Tell friends how to properly dispose of waste\, and encourage them to Bring Their Own\n8. PARTICIPATE in an cleanup event \nWorkday Description:\nBe part of the solution and participate in a cleanup! For this workday\, we will be completing a roadside cleanup along one of Polk County’s heavily trashed areas\, Shuford Road. Areas that were once a mat of Kudzu vines are now lush with native vegetation! But the fight is not over\, and we need your help! \nJoin us Monday from 9:00-11:00 a.m. at the Norman Wilder Forest parking area/trailhead off of Hwy 176\, between Tryon and Saluda. DESCRIPTION:Date: April 28\, 2025 \nTime: 1:00 a.m. \nLocation: Trombatore Trail \nTrail type: 5 miles\, out and back\, strenuous \nElevation gain: 1\,000′ \nGuides: Pam Torlina and Mary Miller\, of Conserving Carolina \nJoin Conserving Carolina for a free\, guided wildflower walk on Trombatore Trail! This walk will be led by Conserving Carolina’s Community Engagement Director\, Pam Torlina\, and Mary Miller\, Community Engagement Associate. Pam and Mary will lead participants on an moderate walk. Though the trail is ranked difficult\, this will be a wildflower walk\, not a hike\, so plan to go short distances\, stopping to admire flowers. We probably won’t walk the full 5-miles of the trail\, but want you to be prepared\, if we do. We will share tips about how to identify these flowers and some of the unique adaptations they’ve evolved to ensure pollination. \nFor your safety\, do not attempt this activity if it is beyond your ability and experience. Participants should wear appropriate clothing and footwear and bring a snack\, water\, and any personal medication that may be required. \nIn case of inclement weather\, please contact Pam Torlina by e-mail\, pam@conservingcarolina.org\, by 9 a.m. on the day of the walk and/or check the Conserving Carolina website to see if the walk will take place. \nSpace is limited to 15 and pre-registration is required; RSVP below. \n*SPECIAL NOTE: This hike will leave out from the same parking area as Bearwallow Mountain Trail. DESCRIPTION:Native Plant Garden Volunteer Team! \nDo you have an interest in native plants?  Join us Thursdays from 9am –  12pm at Ironwood Square\, 847 Case Street in Hendersonville\, home of the Conserving Carolina office.  Over two acres has been planted with an amazing collection of native flowers\, shrubs\, trees\, and bog plants.  Volunteers are needed to maintain the extensive garden for community use and educational programming. \nNo experience needed\, but please bring gloves and gardening tools! \nPlease note that hours will change seasonally.  Starting May 1st we will work from 9am- 11 pm every Thursday.  As the weather gets cooler we’ll work from 1:00 – 3:00pm every other week.  The website calendar will reflect these changes. \nFor more information or to sign up contact mary@conservingcarolina.org.

This presentation will highlight Conserving Carolina’s innovative floodplain restoration projects along the French Broad River\, focusing on their important role in mitigating flood risks\, improving biodiversity\, and enhancing water quality. Using real-world examples\, such as the Pleasant Grove and Kings Bridge restorations\, we’ll explore strategies to restore natural functions to floodplains and build resilience against extreme weather events like Tropical Storm Helene. Attendees will gain insights into effective restoration techniques\, the power of community partnerships\, and the importance of integrating traditional ecological knowledge. Join us to learn how these projects serve as a model for creating thriving\, sustainable landscapes that support both people and nature. \nTorlina received her Bachelor of Science degree in biology from the University of South Carolina Upstate and has been working with the Conservancy for nearly 19 years. She has more than 30 years of experience as a field biologist\, naturalist\, and outdoor educator. As bears expand into areas with suitable habitat\, it is important for communities to learn how to coexist with them. Living with bears is part of life in North Carolina. \nMark has been an advocate outdoorsman his entire life\, being a native of the NC Appalachian Mountains. His desire to extend his outdoors love and knowledge led him to employment with the NCWRC as an Enforcement Officer in March of 2007. He has worked from Manteo to Murphy with NCWRC Agency and has developed an even greater love for this state and its wildlife resources. He currently lives in Macon County with his wife/best friend.  As of September 2016\, he has worked as an educator\, coordinator\, and program developer with the NCWRC education division. You can expect to hear updates about the cleanup process\, bank stabilization ideas and projects moving forward\, volunteer opportunities\, and what the future of the Green River looks like this season for recreation. You will also hear about water sampling efforts and how to get involved! \nErica is a graduate of Northwest Missouri State University with a Bachelor of Science in Spanish and Broadcast Journalism and two reputable leadership programs. She also holds a Certificate in Nonprofit Management from Duke University. Throughout her collegiate experience\, she found her passion for helping others while studying abroad in Mexico for three summers and living with amazing host families and teaching English as a Second Language at local schools and an orphanage in the Dominican Republic. After graduation\, she spent time serving as an Americorps*VISTA Member in Spartanburg\, South Carolina\, where she fell in love with the conservation world and local food movement. For the past 10 years\, Erica has worked in the agricultural field supporting new and beginning farmers\, managing farmer’s markets\, running her own small farm business\, and advocating for the protection of farmland for future beginning farmers. DESCRIPTION:Native Plant Garden Volunteer Team! \nDo you have an interest in native plants?  Join us Thursdays from 9am –  12pm at Ironwood Square\, 847 Case Street in Hendersonville\, home of the Conserving Carolina office.  Over two acres has been planted with an amazing collection of native flowers\, shrubs\, trees\, and bog plants.  Volunteers are needed to maintain the extensive garden for community use and educational programming. \nNo experience needed\, but please bring gloves and gardening tools! \nPlease note that hours will change seasonally.  Starting May 1st we will work from 9am- 11 pm every Thursday.  As the weather gets cooler we’ll work from 1:00 – 3:00pm every other week.  The website calendar will reflect these changes. \nFor more information or to sign up contact mary@conservingcarolina.org.

SUMMARY:Writing with Nature
DESCRIPTION:Come join Dr. Mattie Decker for Writing with Nature! This includes an experience of Shinrin Yoku\, known as “Forest Bathing” with Mattie Decker\, ANFT certified guide and mindfulness teacher. We gather in a circle\, with mindfulness meditation before embarking into the forest to “find our spot”\, our tree\, or place we are drawn to sit and write. Afterward there are refreshments shared\, as we tell about our experiences\, often reading what we’ve written. Participants are also encouraged to bring writing they are working on\, or journals to continue projects they are midst. There are always surprises\, and amazement in how the medicine of the forest provides us what is uniquely needed for each of us. For new writers\, or those who are writers\, this experience offers a dimension of awakening to the deep relationship we each have in Nature. \nLocation: Laughing Waters Retreat\, HWY 74A at Gerton. DESCRIPTION:  \n  \nJoin the Conserving Carolina “Kudzu Warriors” as they continue the fight against Kudzu\, a non-native and invasive vine\, at the Conserving Carolina owned Norman Wilder Forest off of Hwy 176. \nThe Kudzu Warriors\, named for their hard work eradicating Kudzu on Little Warrior Mountain\, have been defending the Conserving Carolina nature preserve from Kudzu (and other exotic species) since 2011 and have made a tremendous impact on the property. Areas that were once a mat of Kudzu vines are now lush with native vegetation! But the fight is not over\, and we need your help! \nJoin us Monday from 9:00-11:00 a.m. at the Norman Wilder Forest parking area/trailhead off of Hwy 176\, between Tryon and Saluda.
